Mermaids: Binders in a heatwave

Mermaids have some tips on how to manage in a heatwave with a binder. Because - guess what! - it's not a great idea to constrict your breathing! And I presume wearing a binder must increase the risk of heatstroke.

Mermaids suggests these tips will help avoid heatstroke/fainting while wearing a binder:

Don't wear black
Stay out of the sunlight
Avoid exercise

Only if you feel symptoms of heatstroke do they recommend you remove the binder:

'watch out for signs of heatstroke or heat exhaustion. If you think you have these symptoms, tell a friend so they can watch out for you. If you can, get to a place where you can remove your binder '

Why does Mermaids want to facilitate children risking their health? If a child or teenager feels that they have to conceal or alter their body to fit some idea of 'gender identity', it suggests they are in need of help to manage their feelings, emotions or mental health. They need support to ask why they might wish to risk their health to fit some imagined body ideal.

Not tips on how to mitigate the risks of wearing a binder.

Or get a part time job in a charity shop.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 12/08/2020 16:42

@Roswellconspiracy yes they are seeking help, they are soon having surgery to remove their breasts.

They are not mentally ill and it's quite insulting to insinuate that if they just took a bit of exercise then they would learn to live their bodies.

@BaronEssoStation it's not just women and girls that wear binders, non- binary people and men also wear them.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 12/08/2020 16:48

Why would a man wear a binder?

SerenityNowwwww · 12/08/2020 16:52

So a non binary person. Sorry but your gender doesn’t wear one, your sex does.

Roswellconspiracy · 12/08/2020 17:00

You just said they needed binders to preserve their mental health they clearly are mentally unstable Confused

I would suggest that the fact that someone is taking drastic measures to in something way alter their body in a dramatic way (that could physically harm them) would indeed indicate that they were deeply unhappy and in need of therapy or counselling.

Not being able to come to terms with their changing/maturing body could have a few reasons, and thinking that you will only be happy with body modification also indicates this.

No one benefits from hunkering down indoors, avoiding exercised, socialising with real people and getting outdoors.

@TheLovleyChebbyMcGee

Men wear binders to conceal their breast, or to help disguise their medical conditions. A cis man can grow breast tissue, it's called gynecomastia.

You wear a binder on your body, doesn't matter what gender or sex you are!!

Cis - bleugh.

Please don't use cis, it's not welcome.

I don’t think this group is advising men with breast tissue problems.

I’d also hazard a guess that any binding the men use would have been prescribed for them by a real doctor and possibly even made to measure for them to make sure they can breathe... and given guidelines for safe use.

funkyblackbird · 12/08/2020 17:17

Can we provide mermaids with binders for their keyboards ?

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 12/08/2020 17:23

I can use what language I like thank you, it is not offensive.

SerenityNowwwww · 12/08/2020 17:24

Yes it is. Hand up if you agree.

Roswellconspiracy · 12/08/2020 17:26

We all find cis highly offensive we re not a subset of our own sex class.

We do not identify with our oppression.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 12/08/2020 17:30

It is offensive.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 12/08/2020 17:32

'Cis' is offensive. It offends me.

Likewise, many feminists are affronted by the term ‘cis’ and ‘terf’, so using these terms will make civil debate less likely. As we’ve said, context is everything – but it’s likely that going forward our moderation team will delete these expressions.

And it's against talk guidelines.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 12/08/2020 17:32

They want to have healthy breasts removed? In what sense is this the course of action of someone who is happy with their life and their body?

And nobody said exercise would solve all the issues. However, I'd say it's a pretty important part of basic self care, mental and physical. Recommending someone NOT exercise is irresponsible.

@SerenityNowwwww yes that's right, take a poll on the most biased board on mumsnet.

That's why I don't usually come into this board, because there is no debate, no thinking that any opinion other than your own is wrong. Not even reading your replies, pointless even trying engage.

borntobequiet · 12/08/2020 17:34

Regardless of offensiveness - it’s bloody nonsense. As is non binary and all the rest of it. Meaningless wokery.
Women are women and female. Men are men and male.
Intersex is a disorder. Gender is a linguistic term, but more recently describes a set of stereotypes.
I’m really sick of this.

SerenityNowwwww · 12/08/2020 17:35

It’s not just removing the breast though - it’s ‘transforming’ themselves into a male body. Why are the girls seemingly much more compelled to do this than the boys to remove their bits?

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 12/08/2020 17:37

I hate to break it to you, Lovley, but we are just a collection of people who reflect reality.

If anyone needs to be wary of echo chambers and bubbles, it's the ones contemplating self harm because of some very confused ideas about 'gender'.

So go and ask your mum. Explain why we need this new made up word to become a subset of our own sex.
