I'm a unison member, unfortunately my professional union affiliates to unison
I want to ask them what they are doing for women but am afraid of the answer because I would leave them. I don't want to be without a union, I want the insurance it gives
Are there any GC Unison members or any union that would support GC women?

Are you involved with Unison women's group? That would be a good place to start.

SerenityNowwwww · 10/08/2020 18:39

Oh they are fine with women. Just ask them to define women though...

Falleninwiththewrongcrowd · 10/08/2020 19:12

I withdrew from Unison after they sent a bullying letter to the Morning Star for daring to publish a GC cartoon. www.unison.org.uk/news/article/2020/02/trans-letter/

They have some cover in private eye this week - I’ve not sat down for a proper read yet.

I had an issue with Unison. They are the only recognised union for my workplace. They asked for 'Gender Neutral' toilets as part of representing our interests. We were not consulted. The ladies toilets were re-branded and changed to mixed sex and the union was supporting the change. I'm too junior and new/vulnerable to be able to take this fight on.

I start a new job on Monday.

SerenityNowwwww · 10/08/2020 21:08

Just the ladies loo changed?

whatnow41 · 10/08/2020 21:43

@SerenityNowwwww

Just the ladies loo changed?
Yes. The men's retained their single sex status due to having urinals and protecting the dignity of men who choose to use them. I kid you not. I was criticised for referring to the new toilets as mixed sex, I was told I had to call them gender neutral but I refused to go that far. They were just normal ladies loos with cubicles and shared wash basins. Mixed sex.
SerenityNowwwww · 10/08/2020 21:48

Well well well. Men’s and unisex. Marvellous. Why do men need a single sex loo?

Unison support the reform to the Gender Recognition Act. In their factsheet relating to this one of the 'mythbusting' facts is that puberty blockers are the only way to treat the pain suffered by trans children and that their effect is reversible. I have just written to them to ask if they will be updating this in the light of new guidance from the NHS. If anyone is a member they might like to do the same.

HuckfromScandal · 28/08/2020 11:03

I am a Full time official with Unison. The policies are democratically set by our members.

Many of my colleagues are strong GC feminists, we are having to deliver policy we fundamentally do not agree with.

There is pushback from a strong cohort of lay activists, but they are treated the same way by TRA's within the union as we are treated online.

MrsWombat · 28/08/2020 11:46

Is there another public sector union that is GC?

HuckfromScandal · 28/08/2020 13:53

@mrswombat - sadly not that I am aware of - they have all drunk the koolaid - however - there are GC in every single one that I am aware of - fighting from the inside - it truly breaks my heart.

TesselateMore · 28/08/2020 21:04

Can you think of anything members can do to change their stance. I was thinking of mailing them when I read this blog:
www.unison.org.uk/news/article/2020/07/blog-reform-gender-recognition-act-essential/

..but I'm a bit lazy really and it's maybe too late.

I opted out of the political fund is my only consolation. Let us know if there's anything we can do to push back on their proposals to reform the GRA.
