I am struggling with this one

twitter.com/TransSalamander/status/1291818785981124608?s=19

I don't really know what to say, but I think this dangerous ideology needs to somehow be challenged.

I work with teenagers and I listen and support all of their valid concerns and arguments, but this account is followed by some of the young people I know and it really worries me.

Does anyone have anything useful to say that I can store for when I'm having conversations about this with young people who possibly being persuaded down a tricky opinion-path by stuff like this?

Op, I’d also try getting them to discuss why male cancer charities can put out leaflets for Prostate Cancer info for Men whereas female equivalents have to be put out for cervix havers or people with ovaries etc.

And then get them to step through simple sums to show how this can impact on death rates with the reduced rate of uptake due to women not realising it applies to them vs the hurt feelings trans individuals that are not physically harmed by the wording on the leaflet. And then get them to set the levels at which point they think the words should be changed from woman to I-w-c etc re death rates. Also discuss why words/phrases are treated differently different for males and females - why is that, what can be done to make it fairer etc.

I'm rather of the opinion that a robust 'that's just really silly, isn't it' ought to do.

@wibdib thank you. Some really useful thoughts.
@Errol - it is rather silly and that's, of course, my personal opinion but I work with 16-25 year olds and they are a particularly "tolerant" set. Two of them are ftm trans and one is mtf so I need to tread rather carefully.
One of the ftm trans students follows this account.

This isn't dangerous, and I dont see what is?
This is intro to sociological theory about how biological sex and gender is created within society. I recommend the book "Social Constructionism" to learn more.

Biological sex is not socially constructed.

I don't understand how Kathryn can be a non binary woman, isn't that a contradiction in terms? I thought non binary meant you don't identify as a man or a woman?

“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less.”
“The question is,” said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many different things.”
“The question is,” said Humpty Dumpty, “which is to be master—that’s all.”

Don't be like Humpty Dumpty.

Gender is constructed. Biological sex predates sociologists, society and humankind itself by millions of years. We didn't create sex - it created us.

Any theory which tries to say otherwise is worthless drivel.

Big News! According to this response in the twitter thread, it seems we now have a means of biologically assigning gender at birth. This is huge! This will mean that transgender will cease to exist in the very near future!! I’m sure this will be all over Twitter very, very soon.... 💁🏻 🤷🏻

hi, im a trunk person @yerawizardkita
Replying to @balis_nicky and @TransSalamander

The point of the trans part is that somebody assigned them a gender at birth (without investigating their biological makeup at all, they just looked at the peepee) and then they said “nope, not for me.”
