To be honest, I think there is a fundamental mis communication around prejudice and bias between the statisticians and the social sciences. This is an example of it.
I have sat in on debates about racism. The social scientists think it is racist to make any generalisation around ethnicity, even if the side effects of a drug are 80x as common in people of East Asian descent, for example. The statisticians think it is racist to assume everyone behaves the same as the white, Caucasian males it was tested on.
It's a bit like Invisible Women and the "Gotcha" saying "what is this book if feminists think men and women are the same." Same school of thought, same fundamental problem with our education system.
