Gamers

Why is it that whenever I click on the more batshit TRA profiles on Twitter, they are gamers? Every bloody time. I don’t understand what the correlation is. Can anyone explain? Is this whole thing some kind of MRA proxy to continue and extend Gamergate or something?

I do wonder this. The other day I was pondering about the link being someone whose life is largely lived online - while it’s obvious in 3D, face to face contact who is male and who is female, it can be obfuscated more online. You can “be” that cat-eared avatar, or that impossibly buxom sexpot of a female character that you’ve created for your preferred game, and who is to say that you’re not? If a large part of your life, and your friendship group are conducted through a screen, what does it matter what your actual body is, and why shouldn’t it be as real or more real than the fantasy life you have in your game?

nauticant · 03/08/2020 18:01

These idiots with their (often porn-based) anime avatars have been calling for authorship of Harry Potter to be taken away from JKR and assigned to Hatsune Miku.

SophocIestheFox · 03/08/2020 18:02

I’ve not expressed myself in that post at all well Confused

What I’m driving at is that there’s obviously some relationship between people who feel disconnected from their physical body, and people who spend a lot of time in environments where their physical body doesn’t matter. Which comes first, I don’t know.

thehumanformerlyknownasfemale · 03/08/2020 18:15

I've noticed an obsession with Anime and K-pop, too.

Especially gifs on twitter. They'll spout some nonsensical bollocks and sign off with an irrelevant K-pop dance gif Confused

SheWhoMustNotBeHeard · 03/08/2020 18:29

Mmmm. My friend works in secondary education. She is in a pastoral position and she says that there are lots of students who "go out with each other" who actually never see each other outside of school. A lot of them don't even have phone conversations. It's all messaging and liking etc. Totally online life. I guess with the whole COVID-19 epidemic it's even worse. At least they were interacting in school.

SheWhoMustNotBeHeard · 03/08/2020 18:32

Sorry. Posted before I meant to...

That was off the point but I think I'm trying to say is that they are used to life online. Gamers also occupy fantasy life. Maybe that's why hentai is so popular with the 18-24 year olds.

Thingybob · 03/08/2020 18:34

There is also a strong correlation between autism, gaming and anime. Could it be that many of these TRAs are on the autistic spectrum?

SheWhoMustNotBeHeard · 03/08/2020 18:34

Can someone explain the k-pop thing on Twitter cos I just get why it's posted for tweets they don't agree with? Why is that?

SheWhoMustNotBeHeard · 03/08/2020 18:36

@Thingybob

There is also a strong correlation between autism, gaming and anime. Could it be that many of these TRAs are on the autistic spectrum?

And between autism and transgenderism.

DialSquare · 03/08/2020 18:38

I've noticed that too. I only read twitter but they're definitely of a certain type. TRAs just diont seem to have the equivalent of women like Jane Clare Jones.

Thingybob · 03/08/2020 18:40

Yes shewhomustbeheard. There is evidence of a large percentage of younger people presenting as trans being autistic but is there any evidence for older ages?

SheWhoMustNotBeHeard · 03/08/2020 18:43

I was thinking of young people when I wrote that. I don't know about older people. There needs to be research about this, if there already isn't.

OhhhPeee · 03/08/2020 18:49

I completely agree about the secondary aged children having long-distance “relationships” with people they’ve never met in the real world. One that stands out in particular was a girl ( now identifying as a boy) who was “engaged” to a boy in Australia. They’d been “together” for five years but never met in person. She was frequently exhausted as she spent a large proportion of the night online due to the time difference. Parents had spilt up and both had small children with new partners so didn’t have much time for her, but didn’t object.

Thingybob · 03/08/2020 18:50

Yes I guess they are all relatively young but I imagine they have transitioned when they are 18+

SheWhoMustNotBeHeard · 03/08/2020 18:54

Also, I don't necessarily believe that there is a direct correlation between the high numbers of young trans people and autism.

Another friend works at a school. There are currently about 10 girls in 2 year groups who are identifying as trans and have changed their names etc. All have autism but they are also in the same friendship groups. A lot of them also have car crash home lives, some have been abused. It's just not that simple.

GCAcademic · 03/08/2020 20:11

The anime Twitter accounts certainly seem to be kids. But the ones with "gamer" in their profile are usually older. I see them as rather different demographics. I agree that there is common thread of lives lived and identities shaped online, though. In fact, I know an academic who works on transhumanism, and they are a huge TRA, trying to stipulate that "TERFS" shouldn't be allowed to take their classes.

Jeeeez · 03/08/2020 20:41

I thought the link between autism and transgenderism was quite well established, at least in kids. And also with LGB? They're also likely to hang out together at school, being a bit of a tribe, which obviously makes separating social contagion harder.

Of the 3 girls I've personally heard of being TG in the past month, one has the diagnosis & another is suspected but refuses to be assessed.

DreamingBe · 04/08/2020 00:16

I come from a gaming and anime fan background and used to be fully woke until I realised my peers and friends were wrong and it was a load of nonsense. I feel I can give an anecdotal insider's view.

There is a TONNE of anime, manga and related porn that revolves around crossdressing, body swap plots, characters who are visually female in every way except for having male genitalia and characters being magically physically transformed.

The vast majority of the anime fans I know in their 20s-30s are also gamers, woker than woke, spend far too much time on the internet and many have had an autism diagnosis or I would say exhibit similar traits. Several of them have transitioned or identify as NB or other genders.

The few people who I've seen question the doctrine were threatened with real life violence, vilified as evil and cast out of the community.

Jeeeez · 04/08/2020 01:19

@DreamingBe what did you do when you realised that if you don't mind me asking?
