'To make something like FFS truly accessible — and to give trans people true agency over it — requires completely reimagining the capitalist medical system.'

“Exercising bodily autonomy, including over contingent and aesthetic aspects of our lives, is an element of a life worth living for everybody,”

Fair enough, we should all have the right to do what we want to our bodies but we don't have the right to expect others to pay for it.

The sheer fucking entitlement moaning about trans surgeries being canceled because of covid is breathtaking. Every surgery carries a risk to hospital staff right now so it is entirely right the cancel cosmetic procedures.

I hope you make a full recovery, Lionheart. Shame you have to pay for essential care, but I’m glad you got it. Flowers

Too bad there’s no cure for narcissism ...

Ditto, #Lionheart# Most of trans activism I have seen online shows zero empathy toward anyone else, and also obviously zero willingness to compromise on any of their demands.

Looking in the mirror and knowing you don't look feminine enough is, in my opinion, a truly female experience.

PumbaasCucumbas · 29/07/2020 07:39

This reads like a parody... giving your nose ‘oomph’ on par with delayed cancer treatment.

The article explains that some people travel for cheaper treatment and crowdfund to pay for it. Problem solved then.

My friend had to do this for life saving stem cell treatment for rapidly progressive MS. Just grow up.

PumbaasCucumbas · 29/07/2020 07:41

(That was to the article not to anyone here btw Grin)

“If the system we have in place has failed to serve even me—a white, feminine trans woman who’s into men, the very individual these institutions were built for—then who is it even serving?” Walker writes, adding: “Why shouldn’t it be replaced with something new and better?”

Melroses · 29/07/2020 07:57

What can you say? Confused

FFS

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 29/07/2020 09:37

But this article isn't talking about the NHS, it's generally referring to healthcare in the US and Canada.

And to be honest, overthrowing that capitalist medical system would be a great thing, so if they can do it, it would help an awful lot of people.

In our newly adapted coronavirus vocabulary, categories like “essential” or “elective” (whether as work, services, procedures, or excursions) are political and fraught. In many cases, the designation “essential” is a marker of being undervalued and underprotecteded, as in the case of food workersrs. The label is both a blessing and a curse, given at the will of the capitalist state.

This person thinks that operations to change the way you look are "essential" and it's the capitalist system which sets these labels arbitrarily.

I would love to show them that bit in hitchhiker's guide where they find the group of hairdressers and estate agents, put in the "other" ship of essential workers.

OneEpisode · 29/07/2020 18:10

Douglas Adams obviously had low maintenance hair. I’ve not been bothered by missing my haircuts during CV, but it seems others have!

I’m awaiting medical treatment, and I have had umpteen phone calls and video calls. I finally get a blood test in person tomorrow.

Priorities.

testing987654321 · 29/07/2020 18:34

My hair is actually really annoying me, but can be dealt with by putting it in a bunch/clips. Not particularly attractive but that's not essential.

Coyoacan · 29/07/2020 20:06

Now that body dysphoria is not classified as a mental health problem, how do they manage to get insurance companies to pay for these treatments?

Wishingstarr · 31/07/2020 01:54

Apparently my POV got deleted so there you have it: wealthy white men get what they want and to hell with everyone else.

Durgasarrow · 31/07/2020 02:17

What could be more reasonable than to ask for other people to provide a trans lady $50,000 for cosmetic surgery on her face (alone) during a pandemic? As the article says, "Trans people have no shortage of wants." If trans people have wants, is it not our duty to fulfill them?
