People with ovaries - Article about fertility over the age of 35

This article is nearly a year old so apologies if there has already been a thread on it. It's about fertility in women over the age of 35. However the article scrupulously avoids mentioning the words 'woman', 'female', 'man' and 'male':

www.google.com/amp/s/www.self.com/story/fertility-age-35/amp

It does reluctantly use the word 'woman' when discussing historical records, but reverts to 'people with ovaries' as soon as the article turns to the present day. Men are referred to as 'people who produce sperm'.

It's just utterly absurd.

Is this the UK?

EdgeOfACoin · 28/07/2020 08:28

American. However, where the US leads the UK tends to follow.

Like with BLM - the US narrative around race has been imported wholesale over here, even though the issues are not necessarily the same.

I look forward to the next crop of superhero movies once Hollywood is forced to fully comply.

Why can't it be women and transmen with ovaries?

highame · 28/07/2020 10:55

too complicated 'transovs' might work, more succinct 😁

They could - if they really can't bear to say 'women' - use 'females', and in the introduction briefly clarify that this topic is specifically about issues concerning females who have ovaries.

There are probably porn films called most of those already!
ErrolTheDragon · 28/07/2020 11:03

Or pedantically, 'at least one ovary' since presumably it also applies to women who for whatever reason only have one.

Women and other people with ovaries?

I don’t really feel it is fair on transmen/nb types to be referred to this way but as they are not complaining about it I guess they’re ok with it, unlike many women.

Hileni · 28/07/2020 11:08

I asked this on another platform @Newwayofthinking and was told because then it excludes intersex and non-binary people.

I said that I found it dehumanising to be referred to as a 'person who menstruates' and was told I need to look at it as a group I belong to, like I would 'people with brown eyes' but I don't have to identify as it.

I didn't know what to say so I left the chat.

Antibles · 28/07/2020 11:16

Women and other people with ovaries?

There aren't any other people with ovaries. (Well except girls, but it's an article about fertility over 35).

The door simply has to be slammed shut on this linguistic nonsense.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/07/2020 11:57

I'll give "Social Justice League" a miss.

Refreshing for the sperm producers to be aptly named though, in this case. Still idiotic though.

Deliriumoftheendless · 28/07/2020 11:59

I don’t see a problem with calling transmen transmen, if ether don’t want to be defined as women that’s fine, but the courtesy of how we define ourselves should be extended to all, including women who wish to retain the word woman.

I completely agree. Once you start saying 'women and trans men and other people with ovaries' the word 'woman' loses all meaning.

I sent a friend a good bf video from YouTube to help her with the latch.

Really good info. Apart from the bf mother was referred to as 'the parent' the whole way through. The words woman or mother were not mentioned once in 15 minutes. This is about breastfeeding for goodness sake.
It's getting ridiculous 😡

DaisiesandButtercups · 28/07/2020 12:16

Transwomen might tell you that not all women have ovaries. They wouldn't like the phrase "women and others/transmen with ovaries" for that reason. They might feel it implies a connection between ovaries and being female/a woman.

It is really difficult to find a workable compromise with the trans ideology that trans people are who they say they are, TWAW and TMAM.

DaisiesandButtercups · 28/07/2020 12:22

Oh my goodness Howzaboutye that sounds awful. Quite alienating to the majority of women to watch a bf video without the words woman or mother.

There was a great thread on the topic of "nursing parents" and "chestfeeding" yesterday and how the bf support groups are being targeted for language changes to be more "inclusive". It had to be deleted unfortunately.

calllaaalllaaammma · 28/07/2020 12:41

..that couples with a penis and a vagina between them..

That just sounds so weird.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/07/2020 12:43

Transwomen might tell you that not all women have ovaries

Of course not all women have ovaries, but has anyone ever heard any of them making this sort of complaint?

If you actually are a woman then it's so obvious as to not need stating that most uses of the word 'women' doesn't have to refer to every woman.

DaisiesandButtercups · 28/07/2020 12:47

I agree with you ErrolTheDragon. Absolutely.

calllaaalllaaammma · 28/07/2020 15:05

Women to men: "You know that when they have finished capturing our language they will come for you, due to the purity spiral don't you?
