Encouraging email from MP re GRA

Thank you for your email.

I personally cannot support what is generally known as ‘self-ID’, whereby a trans person could change their gender without some kind of legal formality.

I am, of course, fully committed to achieving equality across all aspects of our society, including for the LGBT community and transgender people. The UK has a strong record in terms of LGBT rights and human rights and I am keen for us to make the case across the globe to ensure that LGBT people, wherever they live, are safe to go about their lives without fear of crime or harassment.

I also understand that colleagues in the Government Equalities Office will be in a position to publish the response to the Gender Recognition Act consultation this summer. I do not wish to pre-empt the consultation response but will take the time to study the detail of it in due course. Sensible legislation will keep women and girls safe and I suspect that many transgender people would agree with this.

Received this from my Conservative MP in response to an email
I sent her about GRA reform. I’m pleased she doesn’t support self-ID and acknowledges the importance of women’s and girls’ safety.

I had a similar one, as did a friend with a Tory MP. I think it shows the party line.

RoyalCorgi · 22/07/2020 15:31

I think it shows the party line.

And that's encouraging, isn't it? Because we were worried that the delay to the announcement meant the govt were wobbling. Looks like they're standing firm.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 22/07/2020 15:33

Good. We've come a long way. People can now say they support women's rights to single sex spaces without the sky falling in.

Thelnebriati · 22/07/2020 15:38

It might be encouraging, or it might be they misunderstand/are misrepresenting what self ID means.

The proposal for self ID was that you would be able to sign a declaration. That would count as a legal formality.
The antithesis to self ID is needing a diagnosis of gender dysphoria.

You could write again and ask if she supports reforming the Gender Recognition Act, and if so how.
Also if she supports women's existing rights to single sex spaces and services that exclude all men including men who identify as women, and how they can be ringfenced.

I got something a lot wishy-washier a year ago from my Tory MP so really hoping they are getting off the fence about this

BadgertheBodger · 22/07/2020 16:27

My Tory MP has now completely ignored 3 polite emails spanning almost a year Hmm

OhHolyJesus · 22/07/2020 17:39

Badger why don't you escalate? Send direct to who it concerns, cc him/her and say you have been compelled to do so as no replies since (insert date of first email).

They can't ignore this any longer.

TornadoOfSouls · 22/07/2020 19:21

Thank you TheInebriati, I will do so.

I didn’t even know you could escalate! Who would I need to escalate to? Sorry am clueless about the actual structure of it but very willing to put in time and effort to get a response

Binterested · 22/07/2020 23:23

I am still waiting for a response from my Conservative female MP - two months and a chasing email later. I was advised to raise it with the Conservative Woman person - I will think of her name in a minute.

OhHolyJesus · 23/07/2020 08:23

Conservative Woman is Caroline Ffiske I think?

Badger you can ask your MP to forward letters onto cabinet ministers and this is something they should do. So if he/she isn't replying I would write to them as normal but cc in the person you want it to go to, like education, prisons etc and note you are awaiting a response from earlier correspondence and then list the dates of all your earlier emails.

These are elected officials, it is their bloody job! Very very poor. We can't let them get away with it.
