Guardian misses the point about the impact of lockdown on the beauty industry

Zoe Williams thinks that people are complaining about eyebrow threading not being allowed just want their eyebrows done. She has completely forgotten it's an industry that is almost totally female and if they can't work they have no income. Talking from a position of privilege or what?

Way to be out of touch with financial reality!

Also by making the assumption that everyone engaging in the beauty industry is doing it for the Menz. Because of course women wouldn’t want to just do it because they feel like it Hmm

I won’t deny there’s a wider issue around the beauty industry and women internalising male expectations of beauty; but some women do genuinely like feeling pampered and want to feel “normal” again. Never mind the fact the perception at work of not looking “professional” if you don’t meet certain beauty standards.

She even says she went to a nail salon herself because she wanted something to do! Why is she allowed to decide to go for sensible reasons but every other woman is clearly only wanting to go to look pretty for the menfolk?

Your thread title is unnecessarily long, OP. You could have just ended the sentence after 'point'.

The sooner the Guardian dies, the better.

Lol

I didn't realise title length critique was a thing Confused. Should I critique your post for missing the point?

I think it was a joke, OP.

Twas indeed a joke.

It is a spectacular dismissal of financial realities. Many in the beauty and grooming industry are female, many are self employed and working round many other responsibilities. Mostly female workers and clientele, so easily dismissed as frivolous and unneccesary. In reality, this is a massive industry, with millions of jobs and a real impact on the economy. How stupid to be an airhead about it.

Yes but when have the guardian been any good lately at connections between 'female' and 'reality'?

Now, if it was a born male identifying as female who wanted their eyebrows threading as part of gender affirming hair removal, I'm sure the guardian would be up in arms. But actual women, trying to make a living? They don't count.
