The CPS and police have been forced to scrap controversial “digital strip searches” of rape complainants, following a legal threat from two survivors of sexual abuse and sustained campaigning from privacy and human rights groups.

Little more than a year after a new policy around the disclosure of private information was introduced, the police and CPS have made a major U-turn and will withdrawdigital data extraction consent formsfrom operation.

That's pretty huge actually. This should be front page news. Really pleased to hear this!

Wow thats great.

Rapes happen inside marriages so not even sure how useful their data would be.

No means no even if a day ago you were both sexting and in to it.

Anyone raped by someone they knew if course there will be communication. And anyone raped by a stranger well dont the police think if they knew who it was they'd have named them? As if they wanna walk around with them still out there ...

Yet another long overdue change needed. Is anyone surprised that women who have been raped are reluctant to hand over all their phones and computers so that some random police employee can pore over all their communications?
No wonder rates of prosecution of rape are at a shameful all time low.
Well done the CWJ.

Well done to the people responsible for this! That digital search was such a curtailing of the complainant's privacy and freedom.
