Are hiring. So many of you are brilliant writers so thought I would share.

I'm reading The Spectator is growing - and hiring via the Spectator app app.spectator.co.uk/2020/07/10/the-spectator-is-growing-and-hiring/content.html

That's pretty interesting that they are growing.

I agree, there are some very clever and eloquent women here. Smile

Milicentbystander72 · 14/07/2020 09:17

I'm a recent subscriber to The Spectator. I've been impressed so far. Their articles are well written and fairly balanced, although I'm drawn to the ones concerning Transgender and free speech.

Douglas Murray tweeted a few days ago that their readership is now higher than the FT and The Guardian. Reading Twitter (although it's not terribly accurate as a whole country measure) many firmer left leaning people, especially women are turning away from The Guardian in droves.

ARoombaOfOnesOwn · 14/07/2020 09:26

It is heartening that they are growing in this time of wokeness, cancel culture and groupthink, when that is everything they are against.

midclegs · 14/07/2020 13:04

I think we should have a thread calling out (in praise) the fabulous eloquent writers on this board.
I rarely write because I don't feel I add that much value but I'm often astounded by the brilliance I see here.

They are giving people what they want when it comes to this debate; no wonder they are doing well.

I really like Katy Balls. Came across her a few years ago when she appeared on Newsnight. Couldn't believe how impressed I was because I had always believed this was an off the wall RW mag. Bought it a couple of weeks ago and had to eat my hat. Very annoying

Milicentbystander72 · 14/07/2020 16:27

Yes Katie Balls is excellent. She also does the Coffee House Spectator podcast.

Milicentbystander72 · 14/07/2020 16:28

Sorry Katy.

Goosefoot · 14/07/2020 16:30

The Spectator and The Times both seem to put some significant emphasis on good writing and real journalism.

The Guardian keeps getting further and further away from that.

Maybe their decision not to charge online readers is not sustainable, IDK. But it's clearly not working, whatever their strategy is. Even many of their own readers object to their strong editorial line, hence the necessity to not allow discussion on so many issues.

Milicentbystander72 · 14/07/2020 16:40

Yes the fact that The Guardian rarely allow comments on their articles is very telling.

Binglebong · 14/07/2020 17:25

@Datun I hope you don't mind me calling you but I think you would be an amazing voice for them.

midclegs · 14/07/2020 23:41

Datun, and Michelle, Prodigal, Just.. so many others.

I'm frustrated that so many of my really bright and lovely friends will only read the Guardian. They dismiss my ideas just because I now (only in the last 12 months) read the so-called 'right-wing' press. It's tiring.

OP posts:
midclegs · 14/07/2020 23:43

And you too Nonny!

OP posts:
Binglebong · 15/07/2020 01:33

Yes, Datun was first to come to mind but add on Rowan, Lang, Bewilderness and so so many others.

MsSafina · 15/07/2020 09:46

The Speccie is one of the few media outlets allowing BTL comments without heavy handed censorship.

Billi77 · 15/07/2020 10:28

I love when people try and make a far right propagandist mag sound cute by calling it ‘The Speccie’

EdgeOfACoin · 15/07/2020 10:31

"Far right"?

MsSafina · 15/07/2020 10:56

Far right is a ridiculous assertion. They also publish articles by Nick Cohen and Robert Peston.

The left have been peddling the BS that they have the moral high ground and the intelligence, for years. I fell for it and lots of other people too but the assault on women from the left has opened my eyes and made me look elsewhere and I have been staggered by what I have found

highame · 15/07/2020 11:06

forgot to finish......intelligent, thoughtful, well researched work

midclegs · 15/07/2020 12:41

Billi did you know that only 2 of the writers for the Speccie are full-time staff? The rest on commission. With no editorial strong-hold. I think that makes them far more liberal than the Guardian - who like the New York Times are being held accountable by the angry mobs on twitter.

I love it when zealots' ideas are so weak they try use daft lies to keep people away from even reading about heretical ideas.

Do they eat babies too at The Spectator?

RoyalCorgi · 15/07/2020 13:01

Douglas Murray tweeted a few days ago that their readership is now higher than the FT and The Guardian.

That's not entirely true, though. The Guardian's print circulation is indeed tiny, and smaller than the Speccie's. But its online reach is huge - one of the most widely-read news sites in the world.

Wasabiaddiction · 15/07/2020 13:06

Online reach is higher at the Guardian because it is free. A paywall would kill them

AbsintheFriends · 15/07/2020 13:11

I'd love to see RedToothbrush's writing published for a wider audience. If it isn't already. (Though actually, we know that MN FWR does have a massive audience.)
