BBC Newsnight: "JK Rowling was attacked for her stance on transgender rights after she published a blog arguing that gender was determined by biology"

FFS

How do we get them to correct it to "JK Rowling was attacked for her stance on women & girls', children's, autistic and LGB people's rights after she published a blog arguing that sex was determined by biology"

It is so frustrating. Even the BBC doesn’t seem to have read what she actually wrote.

Off to complain to the BBC

hamstersarse · 11/07/2020 07:28

The BBC are incapable of critical thought on any issue

Ditch watching them for any news content, life Is so much less frustrating without their ‘tripping themselves up to be woke’ bullshit

PaleBlueMoonlight · 11/07/2020 07:29

Keep complaining and explaining.

Here is your solution!

PapsofJura · 11/07/2020 07:52

At least they mentioned biology which is at least something as this will confuse people who are not well versed in this area as to why on earth wouldn’t it be.

endofthelinefinally · 11/07/2020 07:53

I knew there would be a thread on this. Such lazy, sloppy journalism. It was clear that the person reporting on this hadn't even read what she actually wrote.
The whole piece was dreadful.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/07/2020 08:18

I honestly think we've reached a point where many people see the word sex and automatically replace it with gender and don't even notice. I have the impression this has even happened with the drafting of laws where the distinction matters a great deal, such as the GRA. Does it all go back to squeamishness about using the word 'sex' because of schoolchild sniggering over the fact that sometimes it indicated sexual intercourse?

ValancyRedfern · 11/07/2020 08:59

I agree Gaspode. For most people the two terms are interchangeable. I got a reply from Andrew Moffat about No Outsiders talking about gender instead of sex. He said it would be inappropriate to have the word sex on the wall of a primary school classroom. I think, give what I k ow about No Outsiders, he was being disingenuous, but a lot of people who know nothing about this debate would probably agree with him.

grafittiartist · 11/07/2020 09:00

Thank you!
I shouted back at the telly over that.

Strugglingtodomybest · 11/07/2020 10:05

I noticed this too. It's a shame, as I'm a big fan of Newsnight and now I don't know if I can trust them.

NoSquirrels · 11/07/2020 10:07

JK Rowling was attacked for her stance on transgender rights after she published a blog arguing that gender was determined by biology

Is that what they said? Blimey.

She didn’t have a ‘stance on transgender rights’ she had a stance on women’s rights. A d the blog was not arguing anything about gender!

Mumoblue · 11/07/2020 10:09

Yeah that's ridiculous.
I hate it when people mix up gender and sex.
When people say "So you think there are only two genders?" I just want to tell "No, I think there are no genders! We made it up!"

SocialConnection · 11/07/2020 12:00

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

'Does it all go back to squeamishness about using the word 'sex' because of schoolchild sniggering over the fact that sometimes it indicated sexual intercourse?'

Yep - I remember delivering a training session in which the word sex was mentioned.

Cue sniggering, ooh yes please, fnar fnar fnar ...

They were all police inspectors aged 40+.

On these posters?

But it's not inappropriate so have the words 'sexual orientation' there? How can you have a sexual orientation without sex?

Sickofmisogyny · 12/07/2020 01:15

Hi. Would any of you clever, more experienced people be willing to share a sample complaint text to the BBC on this? I'm relatively new to this fight and I want to get it absolutely spot on. Thank you.

Thank you also for the link to that more general letter to the media from Transgender Trend.

TehBewilderness · 12/07/2020 02:27

They are going to have to publish a correction I suspect or their legal department is going to have a fit.

Vargas · 23/07/2020 12:02

here we go:

SheWhoMustNotBeHeard · 23/07/2020 12:11

You were right @TehBewilderness. It's all happening today isn't it? First the Day, now BBC
