Hi. I am a returning mumsnetter who, like many others, have been appalled by the treatment that JKR has received. I needed a counterpoint to all the hate and misogynistic vitriol that she received. The first place I thought of was mumsnet feminism chat and it's been refreshing to hear the voice of sanity. Thank you.

I want to be proactive and want to do something about the silencing of women, the erosion of women's sex based rights and the eradication of woman as a word. I've signed petitions, sent JKR a card, given money to LGB Alliance and started reading around the issues (who knew hypno porn was a thing and there were otherkins in the world). I am not on social media and although I feel I should be, I don't think my fragile mental health could cope.

What else can I do?

(I work for a local council, how careful do I have to be? )

Write to your MP. I wrote to mine to say how much I supported the government in not changing the Gender Recogntion Act 2004 to incorporate self-ID into law. I also said that medical experimentation on children who cannot give informed consent is horrific.

I was lucky to get a positive response. Next I'm going to have a Zoom call with her to lay out my concerns, including that threatening non-compliant women with the most horrible violence and sexual abuse seems to be OK as far as many progressive people are concerned.

Important interview with Kelie-Jay Keen.

Jackie Doyle-Price MP has already spoken out in parliament on the need to protect women's rights & Safeguard children. The interview concludes with Jackie Doyle-Right urging women to write to their MPs.

K-J K "How do people approach their mp? What do you think would be your advice ?"

J D-P "Well, write to your MP, but I can tell you that MPs pay a lot of attention to what arrives in their inbox. You know I get upwards of a hundred items a day.
You'll find that some campaign organizations are very good at organizing campaigns. Actually I don't take any notice of any of those. Everyone sends the same letter, completely useless! So you just go through the motions responding to that.
But, where people write their own letters and make their own case and it is the individual constituent telling me what they think from their hearts, I take notice.
So, I would encourage every woman who's really bothered about
this to put pen to paper to your member of parliament. And tell them what you think because once MPs realise this is something that people care about, they'll make it their business to get involved.
So, my message to women everywhere is use your voice and tell your MP what you think and then hopefully they'll come and find me out and we can see what we can do."

Ah, I see R0wantrees was already there formulating advice like mine into something more coherent and practical.

R0wantrees · 10/07/2020 22:22

nauticant I can't take any credit, they are Jacky Doyle-Price's words and YouTube provides a transcript! Wink

Thanks. I will write to my MP and see what says. I hope I don't go off on a rant.

Anything else?

Transgender Trend are having a big push at the moment.
It might be a worth getting concerns/resources into SLT/school governors before term ends.

GroggyLegs · 10/07/2020 22:42

I'm in the same position OP.
I did join Twitter to join with other GC feminists but it was like shouting into the void - the vitriol from people who disagree, and the in fighting between the loudest voices was bad for my mental health, so I'm back to lurking here.

I wrote to my MP to support Liz Truss' report and got a very non committal 'I'll read the report when it comes out' type reply, but a reply nevertheless.

I would like to know what else I can do to voice my objections to liberal authoritarianism preventing open debate & free speech. I find it terrifying.
