‘Top Surgery‘ T-Shirt - raising money for a well-known charity

Just came across this whilst on Instagram (a young transman namechecked their surgeon and I followed the link)

These T-shirts are produced by the clinic of a popular ‘top-surgery’ surgeon. I found it pretty depressing to look at but I’m sure it’s an interesting site if you’re shopping around for someone to perform this surgery.

Anyway, I thought the T-shirt was a bit cynical - earning Yet more money for the surgeon who appears to be in high demand. 25% of profits to Mermaids. Nice little link up there. Even one of his own clients expressed their disapproval of him seeking further profit from his patients.

Am I alone in finding this a bit distasteful?

Fucking hell. My friend had a double mastectomy in her teens because of cancer, to see people selling these t shirts and knowing some people may be walking around in them is disgusting. Her scars are beautiful, but not something to be worn on a t shirt, especially by people who have chosen to have it.

Whatever happened to "First, do no harm."?

Robbing young people of a whole chunk of their future potential for no medical reason by removing healthy organs. Is that why people take medical degrees and get all that surgical training? Does this surgeon recruit patients for other sorts of self-harm cutting, too?

Yes I’m just trying to understand who would buy one? Would you want to bring attention to your chest like that and the fact that you’ve had breasts removed if you were a post-op transman? Or would you wear one in an ‘edgy’ or ironic way if you didn’t have the op, or were waiting on the op? I know that many Transmen are proud of their scars and their post-op bodies - hence the open-shirt/shirtless look at the first sign of sunshine. But even so. An inappropriate product I think.

I just searched on Twitter for topsurgery. There are so many youngsters showing their scars in selfies and so many more crowd funding for the surgery...they are so young. I am sure they know their own minds - but I thought I knew everything when I was a similar age, I look back and cringe at some of the beliefs and thoughts I had.

I really hope those young adults have had the appropriate support/counselling and continue to receive ongoing support.

Bloody hell. It’s all about the money isn’t it.

I saw Jameela interviewing a gender reassignment surgeon on her YouTube channel the other week. One of her ‘I’m educating myself here’ interviews. A female surgeon talking in quite a lot of detail about the various male and female procedures. Fair play to JJ she did ask for the all the details. But no mention of post-operative complications or loss of sensitivity. Nerves from the arm simply plumb into your genital nerve pathways and vaginoplasty patients still retain their prostate etc.

Plastic surgery is so lucrative isn’t it?

Omg! Surely there are laws against promoting this sort of surgery!! It’s removing healthy body parts for extremely tenuous reasons!! As someone mentioned a while ago - it is nigh on impossible for a young woman 20s/30s to get sterilised but how can these surgeons do this!! And sell merch!!!!

My immediate thought was the utter disregard for the feeling of women who have undergone mastectomy surgery. But then I'm not in the least surprised, sadly.

I’ve had a quick look and the Advertising Standards Authority has some fairly strict rules on various types of advertising- I think this would be worth reporting esp as there is likely to be an under 18 audience - there must be some rule about promoting this stuff!

As those procedures are currently only done on 18 year olds and over he’s technically not advertising to under 18s but you just KNOW that dysphoric young girls well under the age of 18 will be looking at his Insta and pouring over the before and after photos.

I feel sick looking at that.

Strength in numbers (of complaints).

I wouldn't wear one, but I've had a double mastectomy and women in some of my groups wear them as a way of feeling proud of their scars.
