Congratulations to Janice - you're one of the best:

OP posts:

I'll spam this thread with a comment I posted elsewhere:

I sent an email to the editor of The Times ([email protected]) to say that I was a subscriber because of Janice Turner's articles in this area and also because of the newspaper's commitment to free speech at a time when it is invaluable. Got a nice (brief) email back saying that he gets it.

It's useful for senior people at The Times to get unsolicited emails from rational people letting them know quite how much their stance on free speech and conflicts of rights is appreciated.

justanotherneighinparadise · 09/07/2020 15:31

Brilliant!! Let the adults, adult!

Binterested · 09/07/2020 16:02

Fab. And some nice blue tick endorsement as well. Not brave enough to tell the truth themselves but will congratulate a resolute truth teller Grin

Tide is turning ....

nauticant · 09/07/2020 16:21

Since I'm partly to blame for the maths derail, I'll help get things back on track:

Now that's the way to do it.

StandUpStraight · 09/07/2020 16:27

Janice Turner is the reason I subscribe to The Times. I just love her writing. And she is so damn fearless.

TheTamingOfTheresa · 09/07/2020 16:29

I haven’t been able to see any of Janice’s writing because it’s behind paywalls. Does anyone have a share token / link?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/07/2020 16:32

You can read two articles a week, IIRC, by signing up with an email address. That's what I do. I did have a sub for a while but lockdown put paid to that, sadly.

wellbehavedwomen · 09/07/2020 16:37

Brilliant. She's talented and fearless.

I subscribe to the Times now, too. Not precisely my natural political home, but seeing the Independent has collapsed, and the Graun now thinks Owen Jones is worthy of eminence and pander to the US, to attract sufficient clicks, there aren't that many choices. At least they do genuinely serious journalism. People like Janice Turner are worth paying for.

Free media has been the death of journalism, sadly.

jhuizinga · 09/07/2020 16:38

Theresa, The Times Twitter feed has Janice's three winning articles freely available (Janice has retweeted). A well deserved win for Janice. She is the reason I took out a Times subscription, having abandoned the Guardian in despair.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/07/2020 16:40

She deserves it! And yes, Talcum X must be fuming.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/07/2020 16:40

That's a fantastic gesture to donate the prize money to three women's charities, and great choices.

Nia - that's the charity where Karen Ingala Smith is the Chief Executive - it provides services for women and children who've experienced domestic and sexual violence and is run entirely by and for women

Centre for Women's Justice, which IIRC is run by Harriet Wistrich, Julie Bindel's partner - so many great cases where they've helped get women out of prison, e.g. Sally Challen

Southall Black Sisters - long history of working with Black (Asian & Caribbean) women empowering them to escape poverty & violence

nauticant · 09/07/2020 16:46

Here's a recent(ish) Janice Turner article TheTamingOfTheresa:

archive.is/jKBSy

It's a good example of the quality of her work. She writes about a wide variety of subjects but is often writing about people having the right to have their own views on things.

ChattyLion · 09/07/2020 17:08

Her 3 articles linked to today by the Times for free are here: mobile.twitter.com/thetimes/status/1281226356685262858

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 09/07/2020 18:05

Fantastic, congratulations, Janice. Well deserved.

DianasLasso · 09/07/2020 18:24

Just re-read her "Corbyn is clueless about the working class" article - it is superb (and very much in the spirit of Orwell).

TheTamingOfTheresa · 09/07/2020 18:24

Ace , thanks nauticant

AnneOfQueenSables · 09/07/2020 20:04

This is so well deserved. I subscribed to The Times because of her articles around the GRA. She is excellent.

TehBewilderness · 10/07/2020 00:49

Well earned! I am happy for her and delighted she is donating to women's efforts.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/07/2020 08:58

I hadn’t seen this thread - well done Janice!

Here’s her column from today’s Times:

Excellent as always. And Billy Bragg is an even bigger prat than I thought.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 11/07/2020 09:10

oh, how had i missed this? Flowers Janice.

her writing is so warm and insightful and so bloody true

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 11/07/2020 09:13

and her article this week (thanks for linking) is as fabulous as ever

NotBadConsidering · 11/07/2020 09:23

The Orwell Foundation tells me that when I was shortlisted in 2017, because my submitted articles included an investigation into the global spike in teenage girls identifying as trans, it was threatened with pickets and considered hiring private security to protect staff. So this year it had to formulate a plan in case of fallout because I had won.

Holy shit!

ChattyLion · 11/07/2020 09:57

She’s right and it’s scary AF

PearPickingPorky · 11/07/2020 10:26

Absolutely crazy.

And here's a TRA complaining to the Orwell Foundation that Janice won, since she commits "violent attacks on the trans community"
