Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali-born writer and activist against FGM and child marriage (among other things) has spoken out in support of JKR:

One of the first responses accuses her of cis privilege!

@PerkingFaintly

I hate the assumption that anonymous with few followers = troll

Eh? Is anyone making that assumption. I'm not.

The anonymous Twitter account which has successfully baited people on this thread has a combination of markers which make me think it exists to... bait sincere people like those on this thread.

It's like spotting trolls on MN. And like troll-hunting on MN, I could be wrong.

I was speaking generally not to you (hence didn't quote you). But I don't want to derail either so apologies all.

Oh Gawd - Katie Montgomery touting their turgid, overblown JKR 'rebuttal' again. Straight in there lecturing this colossus of a woman. FFS!

Do they know who they are dealing with here? Maybe they think Hirsi Ali is just another one of those misguided 'activists' who reigns on social media - y'know the type that claims ultimate victim-hood status, repeats mantras, only allows interviews with people who 'adore' them, advertises cosmetic products etc.

Give it a rest please.

MingeofDeath · 08/07/2020 15:27

Who the fuck is this Katy Montgomery?

A metal-head, transwoman who obviously thinks they look really cute so has images of themselves posing in bubble baths eating strawberries, showing off their sparkly painted nails, biting their bottom lip etc.

Montgomerie has been on Mumsnet. Apparently it's great for household tips and recipes. Shame about those opinionated women on the feminist board though.

Katie Montgomery has just tweeted support and a fistbump emoticon for this disgusting tweet by Garbage that exploits BLM and the murder of George Floyd: To the terfs and the other loser transphobes: You are not welcome here. Your desire to kneel on other peoples necks will not be tolerated.

Montgomerie: No tolerance for intolerance

I can't believe it. There is no point in my previous trans* rights, lib-fem-I-disagree-with-TERFs life that I would ever have supported piggybacking off public anger at a black man's murder by police officers. Never.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 10/07/2020 23:31

Really heartened to see Ayaan Hirsi Ali's support.

There was a discussion on newsnight this evening and like most of the media they have totally misunderstood part of the aim of the letter. It isn't as some whiny transactivists said about celebrities being "cancelled" it is about non celebrities having their lives blighted.

But at least they did have AHA speaking up against a Guardian journalist the ulitmate cancel culture paper erasing women's rights every day. twitter.com/BBCNewsnight/status/1281714206425993227

stumbledin · 11/07/2020 00:20

Whole segment starts at about 17:20 www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000kqzq/newsnight-10072020

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 11/07/2020 00:25

Not surprised. She knows what it's like to be threatened.

Falleninwiththewrongcrowd · 11/07/2020 00:51

Newsnight said that Rowling had argued that "gender was determined by biology" 🙄

Goosefoot · 11/07/2020 02:22

I find it interesting how many people in these discussions are sure that cancel culture is not real. Some may be liars of course, but I don't think all are.

It's been obvious to me for a while, particularly looking at what's happening in academia. But it seems like there are a lot of people who have just not seen this at all. Like it's invisible to them.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 11/07/2020 07:10

Please do complain to the BBC about the misleading and misrepresentative bits of Newsnight.
