I'm sorry it's p-news but I found it again here so you don't have to click them. I have no idea what site this is.

www.themarysue.com/halle-berry-should-not-be-playing-a-trans-man/

I found the pnews article on FB posted by the outraged mother of a transchild. They are upset because HB keeps saying the character is a woman when in fact "he's a man". The misgendering wasn't appreciated.
Also HB cannot possibly "get" this character.
I just wonder if there are that many transmen who are good enough actors to be offered the role. Surely it's all about acting ability.
HB sounds very woke about the whole thing but is getting it completely wrong by referring to the character as a woman...
which she is

Wouldn't any trans person playing a non trans role trigger their dysmorphia (if they have it)?

So trans roles would be the only thing they can do from a psychological perspective?

And would a transwoman be allowed to play a transman?

BaronessBrighterThanYou · 07/07/2020 09:00

Hilary Swank in Boys Don't Cry. (She played a transman.)

1999 when nobody gave a fuck about this nonsense.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/07/2020 09:02

That was a good film. But I don't think I saw her as a man.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/07/2020 09:03

This happened with Scarlett Johansson too.

justanotherneighinparadise · 07/07/2020 09:07

Top trumps at play again. So white transgender once again trumps black female.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 07/07/2020 09:10

@TehBewilderness

The ongoing effort to make cis and trans a subset of woman and man instead of the currently understood man and boy as subsets of male, and women and girl as subsets of female is on my last nerve. Linguistic doublespeak.
This, with enormous copper bells on.

SerenityNowwwww · 07/07/2020 09:13

Has she dropped out?

The thing is the studio isn’t making a ‘worthy’ film so won’t want to cast an unknown/lesser talented actor (not that they wold be able to find one that the twitterati would agree was appropriate) unless the script is bloody brilliant - and unless it’s a Saving a Private Ryan or Schindlers List they are not going to get the box office money.

It’s bit called ‘show business’ for nothing. And people who can’t tell the difference between real life and acting really shouldn’t be calling the shots.

Onestepup · 07/07/2020 09:37

Acting is about portraying a character, not yourself. If everyone just plays themselves there is no point in theatre.

Onestepup · 07/07/2020 09:42

An actor identifies as their character during their performance. Surely by trans logic that means actors are the character during that time, so there's no disputing the validity?!

ErrolTheDragon · 07/07/2020 10:33

I can't remember the name of it, but a while ago I saw a film (it was better than this description will make it sound) about a time travelling hermaphrodite who impregnated themself and iirc (though maybe not) gave birth to themself.

Who the heck should have played that person?

northstars · 07/07/2020 10:36

I’m so disappointed (but not surprised) that she apologised and dropped out of the role

ChristmasKitties · 07/07/2020 10:43

These films would raise the profile of trans men- who are never ever represented anywhere, without a famous lead it’s unlikely to be made, who does it benefit to cancel ?

SerenityNowwwww · 07/07/2020 11:11

Can only non binary people play non binary parts? So that would be people of either sex bodies playing parts of people with either sex bodies?

What about playing a foreigner? Or when Angelina Jolie played a black woman? What if you are mixed race (as Halle is) - can you only play mixed race roles? Or if you are Chinese could you play a Korean?

Actors act. That is all.

fiestar · 07/07/2020 11:32

If you want to see a trans man portrayed by a trans man (or maybe the actor is NB, I'm not 100% sure), check out 'Work in Progress'. It is very good.

Tilda Swinton is the only possibility Grin
SerenityNowwwww · 07/07/2020 11:50

Ah yes. Orlando s'himself. I imagine Tilda isn't a 'friend of Joanne'.

Who does the whole TRA ideology/movement benefit? Hmm
Billi77 · 07/07/2020 13:01

Well, in terms of being the spectator of a film, good casting is always a plus. While actors can give brilliant performances as the opposite sex or playing transgender parts they will always be ‘mimicking’ trans. Much like men used to mimic women when women weren’t allowed on the stage.
As a spectator I would definitely benefit from seeing a trans actor playing a trans part as it would cut out the mimicking and get to the bottom of the character.
And judging from these boards, I feel many would benefit from more access to trans people, even if it were just on screen.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/07/2020 13:04

I have nothing against trans actors playing any role, if they are a competent actor.

Queenoftheashes · 07/07/2020 13:08

@calllaaalllaaammma

Did Julie Hesmondhalgh get any shit for playing a trans woman in Coronation Street?

No but they were simpler times, she certainly would be criticised in today's climate.

I did once see an article commenting that Corrie was a bit wimpy for casting her
GivesNoFox · 07/07/2020 13:10

This is almost an exact repeat of what happened to Scarlett Johansson a year or two ago when she was going to play a transman on screen:

www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2018/07/scarlett-johansson-trans-casting

The whole project was dropped after Johansson dropped out.

Gingerkittykat · 07/07/2020 14:31

I'm sure they can come after her now!

I'm surprised there wasn't a reaction to the Little Britain 'I'm a Lady' character at the same time the racial slurs were pointed out.

Goosefoot · 07/07/2020 14:38

I think the narrative has changed a little since The Danish Girl came out, even though it wasn't that long ago. Or really, become more intense.

The fact that HB is more Hollywood and American might well be a factor too.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 07/07/2020 14:39

The Times are covering this. The commentators below the line are somewhat exasperated Grin

Joli played a Hispanic woman once and I've seen that criticised. Charlize Theron too, I think.

They are dead set on making actors conform to very narrow lanes. Unless they go for (supposedly) colourblind casting. There seems to be no middle ground.
