Please write to the Booker Foundation about the Baroness!

The author Jane Harris has written the following letter to the Booker Foundation and urges other GC people to do the same. I have asked her permission to identify her as the author and she says "she doesn't give a shit" about her name being on it. She asks not to simply copy it, as it should come from the heart. The more letters we send them, the better!

Jane said on FB: If you have read and know the background to recent events re Baroness Nicholson and the campaign that Damian Barr led against her which resulted in her 'cancellation' - and if you are smart enough to see and understand the misogyny and hypocrisy that has fuelled this - please write to the Booker people to register your concerns. Here is my letter. Please feel free to use it as a template. My letter is not great or comprehensive as I am frazzled but felt it important to get it in now.
Send your letters by email to [email protected] and also to [email protected]

This is her letter:

Dear Gaby and Dotti,

Along with many other people, I am very concerned at the events of the past ten days or so, concerning the witch-hunt against Emma Nicholson. I hate injustice and I find it incredibly unfair that the Baroness has been removed from her post while other Booker figureheads remain as trustees - for instance, David Willetts, whose own record on voting re LGB matters has also been called into question.

Why does the Baroness have to be removed when Willetts remains? This seems grossly unjust and the hastiness of the decision-making does not help. The trustees who voted to remove Nicholson included Willetts. Again, this seems entirely wrong.

Moreover, you at The Booker have caved to a vicious campaign spear-headed by Damian Barr - a man whose own record in terms of his prejudices has now been proven to be less than pristine as it’s plain from his tweets he is certainly a misogynist and a transphobe.

This matter is further complicated by the fact that the Baroness is simply a scalp. Barr’s campaign - carried out along with co-conspirator Munroe Bergdorf - was simply a way of exacting revenge. This revenge is for the fact that the trans lobby failed to ‘cancel’ JK Rowling for her support for women. Barr is hypocrite enough to be a transphobe but to appear to be supportive of trans rights and work with Bergdorf as a political expediency so long as it means he can punish a woman.

The fact is, Emma Nicholson began a charity with JK Rowling and has been helping women to fight for their rights against a background of increasing demands from the trans lobby. And so, when that lobby failed to bring down Rowling when she spoke the truth, they turned on Nicholson. This is the ONLY REASON all of this has happened.

Please see my tweets for more background if you don’t believe me.

The right thing to do in this instance would be to apologise to Emma Nicholson and reinstate her. Women are also a powerful lobby group. Please listen to our concerns, apologise to the Baroness and reinstate her.

Would you mind letting me know if you’ve received this? I want to check you both got it.

Thanks

yours

Jane Harris

Will gladly do so. I am also very angry.

Binterested · 02/07/2020 20:58

Here's mine:

I write to express my concern at your hasty treatment of Baroness Nicholson who has dedicated a lifetime to the alleviation of poverty and suffering. She is, as I understand it, a Christian who is guided by her faith. I happen not to agree with her on same sex marriage but she is entitled to her view as is David Willetts.

It is therefore surprising to find that you have "cancelled" Baroness Nicholson for her views but not David Willetts. Baroness Nicholson also said something unguarded - even rude - about Munroe Bergdorf - the transwoman who calls lesbians "barren, hairy dykes", who speaks about wanting to "gay bash" homosexual men and who has been fired from more jobs than I can mention for repeated use of offensive speech. I am not aware of any work they have ever done to alleviate poverty around the world.

I am deeply offended by Munroe Bergdorf who told women not to speak about womanhood at the Women's March and who is abusive to gay people, particularly lesbians. I am also offended by Damian Barr who laughs at a transwoman's attempted suicide and enjoys laughing at "whores".

Yet I have never attempted to have either person "cancelled". You on the other hand, have caved in to a campaign by these two armchair activists who use far more abusive language than Baroness Nicholson.

Both seem to delight in silencing women - which is perhaps the real point here. Baroness Nicholson is standing up for women's rights in the face of a determined onslaught from a very small but strangely powerful group of men. I am very grateful to Baroness Nicholson for all that she is doing for women and I am dismayed that you have contributed to this hostile environment for women, their right to single sex spaces and their right to speak freely about womanhood on their own terms.

I am sure I am not the only woman to have written to the Foundation with concerns. I look forward to hearing how you intend to put this right.

Mollyollydolly · 02/07/2020 21:01

Mine's in the Damian Barr thread if anyone wants any other ideas. It's very long!!

BovaryX · 03/07/2020 08:00

Thank you very much Lamaha for posting this and the courage shown by speaking out in this febrile, deranged environment.

Lamahaha · 03/07/2020 08:15

Bovary, I have not yet shown any courage... unfortunately, it's not the right time for me. It's my online friend Jane Harris who wrote this. And let;s keep bumping it!
I am about to write a letter of sheer outrage to the Booker Foundation. I'm going to add those disgusting tweets sent to Posie Parker, who also defended Rowling. Let them know just who they are siding with. I repost them here for newcomers:

Jesus. Not seen that to Posie.

BovaryX · 03/07/2020 09:11

That message to Posie is appalling. Was it on Twitter? I don't know what to say but the virulent misogyny and violence in that is off the charts. Just despicable

CuriousaboutSamphire · 03/07/2020 09:12

Fucking hell! Is that still up? I suppose it is, as it is only a woman who is being threatened!

Letter going off shortly!

I assume the message was sent through Facebook Messenger (Posie is still on FB) but I'm not sure. Will find out.

I’ve written. I had already written immediately after the decision to remove the Baroness, outlining the specific and personal help she had given to my family. I was very polite in that email. I did not hold back this morning. The Booker Prize and Damian Barr represent everything that is wrong with society today.

The only consolation is that this is now his legacy. I’m sure this will not have any impact on his professional life, but this is what he will forever be remembered for- a misogynistic, racist, transphobic bully who called on the mob to oust a life long humanitarian from an honorary position.

Rogdmum, did you receive a reply to your first letter? I would imagine they were hoping it would all blow over when they removed the Baroness. They must be really squirming now. In the comments section of the Times there are people calling for the entire board to resign. They have really shown themselves up as hypocrites and stained the reputation of the Booker Prize.
rogdmum · 03/07/2020 12:03

classicspring Nope, no reply. Wasn’t expecting one to be honest, think it’s even less likely this time!

seadreaming2020 · 03/07/2020 12:16

Done.
I'm so angry about all this, it's more silencing, continued JKR backlash.
Mine included this line
"I am nobody and I possess neither a Twitter account nor a public persona or media profile, but I am also everybody in that I am a woman and a mother and I buy books for myself and my immediate and extended family."

What I didn't say is that the reason I am not on Twitter is for fear of TRAs stalking and reporting - a friend's employer was recently contacted because of tweets she posted supporting sex based rights.
The silencing is overwhelming at the moment.

ValancyRedfern · 03/07/2020 12:21

I'm going to do this this afternoon. Does anyone have Gaby's surname? I don't feel I should be going in with first names!

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 03/07/2020 12:26

I will do this today - thanks for the push.

I am not surprised they didn't reply. They thought they had appeased the mob and were safe. I am actually more disgusted by the actions of the board than Damian Barr ( and that's saying something). They could so easily followed the lead of Hatchette but were too cowardly to do so
seadreaming2020 · 03/07/2020 12:51

It's Gaby Wood

GrandmaMazur · 03/07/2020 12:55

I've written too.

I'm particularly angry because their decision has led to reporting about her in the press where she's been labelled a homophobe, transphobe etc and is completely lacking in detail about what an extraordinary hard working and compassionate woman she is and all that she has achieved. It's so grossly unfair.

I think I'll go and write to her too.

Divoc2020 · 03/07/2020 13:03

Just had a look at the Four Communications website (the Booker's Comms agency, I assume) and found Dotti Irving's profile.

Blimey! She must be conflicted in all of this:
"She has been instrumental in profile development of clients including Harry Potter's JK Rowling..." Shock

Presumably this was in one of her former roles elsewhere?

WhatAWonderfulDay · 03/07/2020 13:10

Wow! That message to Posie is just horrible.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 03/07/2020 14:44

I wrote immediately afterwards as well, but did not get a response. I wasn't sure I sent it too the best email address, though. Where are you sending your messages?

SecretMillionaire · 03/07/2020 15:00

The message to Posie Parker is absolutely disgusting. There is only one part which I would have any agreement with is 'that there isn't any chance to engage in an intelligent discussion'. That is evident from the content of the message.
