Anyone read this yet? I have been listening on Audible. It's well researched, albeit v Amercan focused.

The narrator is a bit annoying (posh Anerican), but that's my bias Smile

I think it's going for a mainstream audience and it does cover the issues

I might give it a read.

If you or others find the book useful, it may be worth leaving an Amazon review, because it seems to be receiving politically motivated reviews from people who probably haven't even read it.

Maduixa · 02/07/2020 22:13

Trying to read it - life keeps interfering!

Re the reviews - Amazon USA has put a block on random reviews of this book with the warning: "Amazon has noticed unusual reviewing activity on this product. Due to this activity, we have limited this product to verified purchase reviews." It was a best seller on the US site even before it launched and still is now no 1 in Transgender Studies, 3 in LGBT Studies, and 1 in LGBT Political Issues.

Amazon UK doesn't seem to be taking any precautions - there's actually a (one star) review on there which says in the first line that it's "based on the sample". Also, I can normally view reviews from other international sites through Amazon UK, but in this case I just see the bad UK reviews, not the (predominantly good) US ones or any others.

I pre ordered it but it's not coming until August. I presume it's audible and kindle everyone is reading now?

I bought the hard copy so I can share in my feminist group after reading.

Quite the selection of "also viewed"! No reviews that I could see on Canadian Amazon...

I am in the US and I get my copy on Friday. You can buy it on Kindle in the US but I wanted a hardcopy. Can you not get a Kindle copy in the UK?

lionheart · 03/07/2020 03:33

Posted about this a few days ago--Amazon seems a bit conflicted on this one ... refusing to advertise.

Call me paranoid but I keep expecting Amazon to stop selling it. I haven't read it yet. I'm trying to get a copy from the library.

Lamahaha · 03/07/2020 19:17

Don't forget to vote the good reviews as "helpful". Helpful votes keeps those reviews at the top.

Lamahaha · 03/07/2020 19:19

The Kindle version is ridiculously expensive. I wish publishers wouldn't do that. They would sell far, far more with a lower price and reach a much bigger readership, more visibility, and more sales.

Thesuzle · 03/07/2020 19:59

People people, please stop using Amazon They dont pay tax and are trying to take over the world, support your local bookshops

SunsetBeetch · 05/07/2020 13:00

Here's a good interview with Abigail Shrier:

2Rebecca · 05/07/2020 13:54

I hung on to my Audible account so that I could get this book as it was released on audible on 30 June. It's excellent, I still have a couple of chapters to go but she has researched the area thoroughly. Lots of statistics, lots of interviews, lots of sadness. I've just finished listening to the chapter on detransitioners.

transdimensional · 05/07/2020 14:07

I'm about 40% of the way through the book. I highly recommend it. It is focused on the social contagion affecting teenage girls, but many related topics come up, and similarly while it's focused to some extent on the American experience, the great majority of it is more widely applicable, and there are at least some references to international experiences in Canada and the UK/Tavistock as well. Furthermore, while Amazon UK considers this book "'#17 in Conservatism", there is nothing the least bit bigoted about this book and I haven't come across anything rightwing in it.

2Rebecca · 05/07/2020 21:26

Now finished it and have done a review. An excellent book

Christ on a bike!

I used to think content warnings on internet posts were silly but I have changed my mind now!

2Rebecca · 05/07/2020 22:32

I tried reviewing it on Amazon as well but was unable to. I thought maybe it was because it was a book and I'd bought it through Audible not Amazon but I clicked on another book I hadn't bought and could do a review on that. Maybe my audible review will appear on Amazon. Interesting that on Audible it gets 1 star or 5. I suspect the 1 star people haven't bought it.

Ooh great, thank you. Do you have a link? I can’t find it at that price but may be being stupid!
