I've just seen on the Guardian website that they are running a series of articles on gender expression

I think the Guardian readership will be confined to navel gazers while the world passes them by at this rate.

Not sure how you can reveal a gender of a baby not yet born in article 2 if you cannot know how it feels in article 3

I think many people on this forum will relate to the experiences the teenagers talk about - but not the solutions they found on the internet 😟

I don’t want to pick over those kids’ experiences because everything written in that article has been analysed on repeat here. They seem lovely, a bit lost, and I hope they have sensible people looking out for their long term interests - the next 20 years, not just what internet friends say the next 2 years should be like.

Gotta say i have completely given up on the guardian and this is partly why. I just hate this naval gazing stuff but it is jot meant for me i guess
I have gone to the times now. Much less woke silliness and also less doom and gloom generally. Some funny columists. The guardian don't have any amusing columnists anymore. Maybe marina hyde but even she can be depressing

I have been reading these and I actually think the two I have read were really balanced. I can empathise a lot with the young people who identify as non binary. I think it interesting that they noted that some people still had expectations of them that they would as a girl. It shows that you can’t identify out of sexism because it is still there.

They haven’t gone down the awful if you like pink you must be a girl route which is so damaging. I think that we need to look at different ways of breaking the rigid gender stereotypes.

Non binary also opens up the discussion to include third spaces which is very positive too.

I too was saddened by how lost those young girls not wanting to be perceived as feminine seemed, and the fact that they all turned to the internet for answers. And their naivety that the internet gave them the answers, rather than put them in as rigid a box as the one they were trying to escape.

I have lots of sympathy for people who don't want to identify with a gender.

The problem is that you still need sex based rights, and the language to describe them.

So much sexism foisted upon the contributors to that very sad article. Why does nobody tell these young girls that they are fine just as they are? Be a masculine girl. It's OK. Gender need occupy none of their thoughts and precious youth. The youngest is 13 FFS.

I really hope that it will be a balanced series and explore all sides of the debate. I'm not holding my breath though.

Seriously? Both my girls wear trousers to school most days, I myself very rarely wear skirts or dresses. It is a shame that “smart” for women still = dresses, but it shouldn’t be a surprise that not all like it.

It is depressing that people don’t see how they’re enforcing the gender boxes by pretending they are special and so don’t fit in them.

None of us fit in them, that’s why we should work towards getting rid of them and just be men/women who like whatever we want and dress how we want.

I'm sick of the Guardian's obsession with these increasingly niche labels. The "Genderqueer Generation"? How relatable is that to young people who are not into this stuff or haven't even heard of it?
