How do you find a total on just giving? I've always seen a total nesr the top if the page but cant on mermaids.

Redshoeblueshoe · 28/06/2020 14:55

I would love it if JKR could stop them selling Harry Potter merchandise.

FairfaxAikman · 28/06/2020 15:00

My prime has just renewed. Bugger.

I don't want to let it go to waste my and I have been supporting my local Woman's Aid through Amazon Smile.

And this is one boycott DH is unlikely to support - he gets too much from Amazon.

I'm a bit conflicted tbh

Allihearischasemarshallskye · 28/06/2020 15:26

I cancelled my amazon prime membership 2 months ago but I can’t seem to cancel my amazon music which I pay £14.99 a month for.
Anyone know how to do this as it seems to be impossible!!

1000umbrellas · 28/06/2020 21:29

I don't know if I can face the summer without prime but I've emailed Amazon detailing my concerns. Email address is charity-support@amazon.co.uk if anyone else wants to do similar.
Interestingly if you watch the Unified in Pride trailer that @BaronessSnippyPantsofCroneArmy posted, over half the presenters are drag queens, one charmingly named JonBenet Ramsme. Yeah, if I ran a charity for children I'd definitely want to associated with an act saucily named after a high profile child murder victim Hmm

KingofDinobots · 29/06/2020 08:16

Wtf. What kind of sicko would want to commemorate that awful murder like that?

Needmoresleep · 29/06/2020 08:55

Ahh. I just used the customer support contact.

Its good though. I already had my reservations about Amazon's monopolistic power, the environmental impact, the use of he Luxembourg for tax reasons and the damage to the traditional high street and the resultant employment opportunities.

I also very irritated that my neighbour seems to think that because I work from home I am some form of delivery depot for her. Up to five parcels a day before Christmas and no thank you. And indeed parcels sitting in our hallway now as they are on yet another break from lockdown. It must be a huge imposition of the frail elderly.

I noted this this morning

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8469107/Department-Transport-considers-compulsory-charge-online-orders.html

I appreciate we all need to order online, and some more than most. However it would be one way of levelling the playing field between on line firms and shops who pay council tax etc.

Promoting a single faceted lobby Mermaids, when the Government has expressed concern about the increase in ROGD, and about the medicalisation of children, is a a strange move, and smacks of a woke US organisation trying to interfere in internal UK politics in a way that they really should not.

Needmoresleep · 29/06/2020 09:31

Customer support have said they will pass on my concerns.

I assume the charity arm is woke and focussed on Pride. I hope the business people understand better, given the breadth of its customer base, the need to stay away controversy.

I hope either the Mail or The Times pick this one up, like they did with Mermaids lottery funding.

Bluebellbike · 29/06/2020 10:05

I like Neste Dante soaps and have got them from Amazon previously. I just ordered some elsewhere. The same price as Amazon but I had to pay £2.49 delivery, whereas it would have been free on Prime. Worth it for me though.

RaininSummer · 29/06/2020 10:30

Well this will help break my amazon addiction.

minsmum · 29/06/2020 11:54

I got a response from Amazon that states that any charity that has charitable status can apply to be enrolled on their Amazon smile programme. I have replied asking why they promoted them on Twitter

Lightofthephoenix · 29/06/2020 12:03

To the poster who asked about support try here

Needmoresleep · 29/06/2020 12:12

Just ordered something via eBay rather than Amazon. Pity as Amazon was cheaper, but still worth it.

BaronessSnippyPantsofCroneArmy · 30/06/2020 11:45

Amazon are also promoting Stonewall as one of the charities you can support via Amazon Smile.

I have a background in both writing and assessing funding applications, though have not done one for while. Happy to have a go for a suitable safeguarding project, if anyone wants to PM me.

The people who get funding are normally the ones who apply.

Sad I only use Amazon to support my ebook habit, but still...!

(That said, this has inspired me to do a little research, and it looks like it's possible to convert epub files to mobi via Calibre. So it should be possible for me to buy ebooks from other sellers, but still be able to use my Kindle. Good. Amazon's rotten business practices have been making me uneasy for some time now.)

Waspnest · 30/06/2020 13:30

Good. I hate Amazon and it's ethics so anything which makes people think twice about using it is fine by me.

contactusdeletus · 30/06/2020 13:32

@TwoTribes

I've been weaning myself off Amazon anyway due to the way they treat their staff and avoid paying their taxes. Not to mention the massive carbon footprint. Have been switching to small independent shops instead and it's been fine. This will just reinforce my views of Amazon and help me avoid them.
Hear hear.

I use Calibre! It's conversion abilities are great, and it's so handy to have a library where you can back up your entire ebook collection, including non-Amazon items. It'll convert everything under the sun.

The only drawback is that you have to connect your ebook to your laptop every time. I hate Amazon's business practices, but so far I haven't found anything that matches their Whispersync instant download facility for when I'm on the road. All I have to do is connect to the internet on my phone and I can have a new book ready to read in 30 seconds. That's where they have the edge, unfortunately

JKRismyhero · 30/06/2020 13:41

Ohhhhhhh ffs it's so good for quick delivery

So can anyone think of other charities that could be supported this way, safe schools alliance maybe, womens place? Not sure if either are a charity, but if they are then can someone contact them to get signed up. Even the Vancouver shelter
Xanthangum · 30/06/2020 15:56

This is in the US, but relevant I think:

This is the lesson my publisher, Regnery, learned last week when Amazon informed it that Regnery wouldn’t be permitted to run a sponsored ad for my book, “Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters.” Amazon’s stated reason for barring the ad—a simple picture of my book’s cover—was this: “It contains elements that may not be appropriate for all audiences, which may include ad copy/book content that infers or claims to diagnose, treat, or question sexual orientation.”

Needmoresleep · 01/07/2020 07:35

Yay, As well as eBay, I have discovered Argos.

I needed to go out yesterday and my route passed a Sainsbury's. So ordered online, then nipped into Sainsbos and the Argos counter to collect it, and on my way. (I did pick a time when there was likely to be no queue.) No needing to be in, no extra packaging waste, no extra van journey down my street.

Why do firms feel the need to support controversial stuff, when they know it will offend at least part of their customer base. Mermaids is so awful. Why are they trying to push us into a societal change that goes against the instincts of so many mothers.

Yester · 01/07/2020 08:03

Don't just boycott it's pointless. Write to them and tell them why. I've alteady boycotted for their awful treatment of staff and tax evasion.
