Just seen on Twitter

Amazon have teamed up with Mermaids
OP posts:

I've cancelled - the lady in the chat said she would pass my comment on. I have to believe her, I suppose.

Clymene · 27/06/2020 16:31

My prime sub is due to renew at the end of the month. Guess that won't be happening now.

SunsetBeetch · 27/06/2020 16:37

Same.

I think it's a very fitting partnership. Both organisations are symptoms of some very dark aspects of capitalism.

I hope this provides the push I need to stop using Amazon. They don't represent the world I want to live in; with humane jobs for humans, human interaction in local shops, independent retailers etc.

The Amazon episode of South Park on Netflix is brilliant by the way and should help provide more inspiration to quit the Amazon habit.

NotAGirl · 27/06/2020 17:16

I think this is the push I need to reduce my Amazon habit

DidoLamenting · 27/06/2020 17:18

I boycotted Amazon ages ago. It's quite easy.

NChat · 27/06/2020 17:19

Bluebooby
I have the reverse problem and use Waterstones to deliver to UK family. Is there another bookshop that would work for you? Most of the big ones sell more than just books.

Of course, the big Canadian chain (Indigo) just denounced JK Angry, so there might not be good alternatives...

DidoLamenting · 27/06/2020 17:46

I do use them to send presents to friends overseas because I haven't found another option that's affordable for me, especially for sending to the US. Any ideas for alternatives?

Why not Google shops in the location of the recipient to see if they do mail order? You'd pay at local rates.

mogtheexcellent · 27/06/2020 17:56

Dammit. Would cancel but DD addicted to a series only on prime. Hrmph.

minsmum · 27/06/2020 18:52

I just asked them how they choose their charities, why Mermaids and if they do due diligence. They will get back to me,so I have started deleting my subscriptions in preparation

MinorArcana · 27/06/2020 19:46

Are amazon themselves giving money to Mermaids, or are they encouraging customers to donate?

I believe Mermaids is already one of the charity options if you’re shopping on Amazon via Amazon Smile.

Bluebooby · 27/06/2020 19:59

NChat thanks for the bookshops suggestion. Apparently Tesco are now going to be supporting mermaids too.

Bluebooby · 27/06/2020 20:11

I am going to write to Tesco about this and in the meantime I'll be shopping elsewhere. Hope others do the same.

hypernormal · 27/06/2020 20:20

Just found this for alternative suggestions. I've always felt guilty about using Amazon anyway, this gives me the perfect reason to shop elsewhere:

ChloeCrocodile · 27/06/2020 20:37

I’ve just cancelled and explained why in the survey.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 27/06/2020 20:45

Are there any charities for gay and lesbian kids now...any? There is nowhere for my daughter, they just tell her she's a boy. I am so angry, this is homophobic bollocks and a capitalists wet dream.

MsMarvellous · 27/06/2020 20:52

Shoot

Tolleshunt · 27/06/2020 20:53

Oh for the love of Christ, I have a massive kindle and audible library, and DD is addicted to some Prime video stuff. Their mail order goods have been creeping up in price and are no longer the bargain they once were, so that’s less of a loss, but still.

Why the fuck have Amazon got into bed with that lot? Of all businesses in the world, surely they least need the woke brownie points. They at least didn’t need to be sheep.

Buggering buggeration.

Bananabixfloof · 27/06/2020 20:54

Good point, I use smile and give to the royal British legion. Just adding so people know there are other charities.
TehBewilderness · 27/06/2020 20:54

I would expect nothing less from a company that published a how to groom book for men who want to have sex with little boys.
Amazon did apologize for that but then they did it again so who you gonna believe?

Bananabixfloof · 27/06/2020 20:54

Not that I'm using them again mind.

Snugglepumpkin · 27/06/2020 20:54

I've just cancelled my Prime & Kindle Unlimited but I didn't see anywhere that asked me why I was cancelling on either of them.

wonderstuff · 27/06/2020 20:58

Been meaning to cancel Prime for ages.

Onacleardayyoucansee · 27/06/2020 21:39

I just cancelled Prime and was asked to participate in a survey.

As others have said, it's the kick I need, they don't have a great track record and this is a step too far for me.

bluebluezoo · 27/06/2020 21:43

Would that be the same Amazon that was forced to remove this 'Daddy's little s*' t shirt for kids from sale last November only after a social media backlash?

And blue lives murder t-shirts. Very inclusive.

Went shopping today for the first time since lockdown. My kids think i’m insane, wouldn’t let them go in Lush, Body Shop is now off limits, no Primark because child labour..no amazon there’ll be no shops left!
