Sorry, no share tokens - I usually get a Times on a Friday when I do my supermarket shop (along with nice bread and ice-creams-on-sticks)

Brendan Cox - is he the widower of the MP who was murdered?
I wouldn't be surprised if many more big charities are guilty of the same failings. Some seem increasingly to be run without focus on their clients or original aim, very money orientated/chasing funding and yet their oversight is the responsibility of a handful of Trustees. Probably volunteers.
There's still, if not more than ever, a need for these organisations but I hope this is a nudge in the right direction.

Melroses · 26/06/2020 17:03

Yes, the trustees are usually volunteers, but the charities are headed up by people who are paid and move from one to the other to bring in their expertise from the last job. It is quite a career pathway these days.

A friend of DH's runs a charity. They do some valuable work, but much of the fundraising is paying for London office space and London wages for staff. Charity not London based although I suspect it helps that it is. He works long hours and is very passionate about the work, but looking at his house and possessions he must be very well paid.
I don't begrudge anyone being paid appropriately but I doubt this set up is unique and only a fairly small proportion of their running costs actually delivers to their target audience.

Charity sector is skewed by some ridiculously rich organisations that most ppl haven’t heard of. 82% of all charities in the UK have an income of less than 100,000

All charity accounts are published & available to see on the charity commission website

Whenever I’m concerned about a charity I always start there with who the trustees are, what the income is & how much is being spent

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 26/06/2020 17:33

This quote about charities is spot on.

"Too many charity behemoths have become lucrative corporate brands, run by self-serving executives who focus on fundraising and forget their founding principles. Many charities have also become reliant on state funding, so they suck up to their political paymasters, silence whistleblowers and pay lip-service to those they claim to serve."

Having worked for a medical charity, the amount spent on the fundraising team, against what the campaigns rasied was frankly obsene.

McDuffy · 26/06/2020 17:53

No problem. Format is weird on the app but not on desktop!

RedToothBrush · 26/06/2020 18:03

The Charity Commission found a “culture that was too insular and dismissive of external criticism” as well as poor staff training and recruitment.

Doesn't that just sum up the problem?
