One Canadian woman's fight to get the Gender Based Analysis (GBA) that by law should have been done prior to Bill C-16 reaching Royal Ascent

Apologies for the long title but I wanted to be accurate.

A Canadian woman called Jennifer Anne has been tirelessly fighting to get this information released ( or an admission that no GBA was done).

Please have a read of her thread. It's shocking this is happening across the world and the lengths governments are going to in order not to be scrutinised for the harm to women and girls.

It's exactly what they tried to do here. Add it in before anyone had chance to notice and I think if Labour had won the last election we would be there already.

Same with this new conversion therapy one. It's not about protecting gay kids, it's about stopping us protecting gay kids from being transed. Once they say the magic T word, anything other than affirmation is 'conversion therapy'

We are finally starting to see some organised pushback from women on this in Canada - all of a sudden it seems - and it's such a relief. I've recently signed up to receive information from a few groups and I hope I'll be able to become involved in some way.

It's interesting that similarly to the UK, it was in the end a Conservative MP who helped her. My husband recently joined the part in order to be able to vote in their leadership election and I'm very curious to see how it will go. I have little time for them at the moment but depending on who is chosen I may have to rethink that.

I'm wondering if it was done at all? I fail to see how even the shoddiest, rushed attempt wouldn't have thrown up some issues - like sport for instance.

Will the bill have to be immediately suspended if it turns out it wasnt done?

How long does musical departments have to go on for before its enough to legally prove it doesnt exist and the whole thing needs to be withdrawn til.proper channels are followed?

I suspect it wasn't done, because they knew damn well it would be bad for women. Would they be allowed to remove it as it would be seen as 'rolling back rights'.

I also suspect it wasn't done. If it was bad, I don't think that means the law is invalidated - they aren't bound politically by the results of those if they feel the bill is still justified politically. It will really have been suppressing it that is the problem, it looks bad no matter how you cut it.

Yup, he's very "my values are Canadian values, and if you don't share them, well, you're unCanadian". At least Harper used to be clear he was imposing a personal vision, it is shocking to me to discover that I would probably prefer him to little Trudeau.

Yes, I think it could be very difficult to get this out.

One of the differences in Canada vs the UK is that we have a small population over a big space, and not nearly the same number of serious news outlets representing different viewpoints. Really there are two national level tv broadcasters, one for radio, and two national newspapers. Other media outlets are local or niche.

Of all of those, only one, The National Post, might print something on this. The others would ignore it or cover it in a way that sidelined it. And no one on the left will read the NP though at the moment it has stronger journalism than the other outlets.

The trouble with Harper was he was utterly authoritarian too, just a right-wing authoritarian rather than a left-wing authoritarian. He was a climate change denialist, to the extent where he suppressed science and imposed a ban on government scientists speaking out in public about anything whatsoever without it first being vetted by Harper's SPADs. He suppressed truth every bit as badly as the woke generation is doing over transgenderism, just over a different subset of issues.

For this reason, left-of-centre Canadians are (rightly) very, very suspicious of Conservatives. I frequently rail against the modern tendency for "guilt by association" and people saying "well you can't get into bed with the right wing on this issue because think what else they've done," but given how horribly divisive and authoritarian Harper was, I can see why it's going to be an enormous uphill struggle to get left-of-centre Canadians to even entertain the idea that someone on the right might be correct about anything.

It does require some brave journalists on the moderate right/centre to take on issues like the treatment of women in prison (I've seen that hair-raising video of a Canadian former prisoner speaking out about the levels of sexual violence endemic in women's prisons there since they started housing sex offenders according to their "gender identity"). But at the moment, given the political climate over there, it's hard to see anyone being brave enough to take it on.

Harper however was open about his authoritarianism. I now find that refreshing.

That's interesting. Kind of goes with the rest of what I've heard about Trudeau, talks the talk, very much does not walk the walk. Still backing the oil pipeline, has done very little for indigenous populations, seems to have had his fingers in some very, very dubious financial pies (had to find some spurious reasons to sack his - indigenous - attorney general to cover that one up). And that's before we even get onto the multiple blackface incidents.

There was some very odd stuff going on with Wilson-Rayboult even before all that with regard to indigenous affairs. Again, under the radar.

It's really very difficult to oppose someone when they keep their agenda so hidden. I have American friends who think we are so much better off here, and in some ways we are, but in others its more like everyone is sleeping so they don't notice what is going on under their noses and never make a peep about it.

And in Scotland there was one, around putting trans women in women's prisons, that was handwritten and shared on here, with the impact on characteristic of sex with 'n/a' written in it.
