HELP US MAKE GIRLGUIDING A MORE EQUAL AND DIVERSE COMMUNITY
We’re seeking members from underrepresented groups to take part in our new diversity and inclusion audit

We’re seeking members, from groups who are underrepresented within the Girlguiding community, to take part in our new diversity and inclusion audit.

We’re doing this audit to help us listen to and understand the experiences of diverse members of our community, especially where they may have felt excluded or marginalised.

We’ll be talking to volunteers, girls, staff and parents/carers to understand the strengths and weaknesses of Girlguiding’s approach to diversity and inclusion, and to identify where gaps and opportunities lie.

Well I imagine the Girl Guides will be short on Muslims, Jews, Sikhs and girls with well-informed parents nowadays.

What Coyoacan said.

Irish girl guides have ALL their policies on line except their Equality and Inclusion Policy. Why?
Because they don’t understand what the laws in Ireland are.

“....The Irish Girl Guides undertakes its responsibility to comply with equality legislation. As such it is committed to ensuring that no young person or adult is treated less favourably than another on grounds of: race, membership of the Traveller Community, sexual orientation, civil status, family status, disability, age.
Anyone who lives their life as female is welcome to join and male adults are welcome in a supportive role as Unit Helpers.”

Fails to quote the grounds covers in the Equality Act.
Fails to quote our miserable GRA.

But if you “live your life as a female” (whatever the duck that means) then come on in and welcome. Angry

There will be quite a few adult males who identify as girl eager to share their ideas.

ShinyFootball · 19/06/2020 01:07

With stuff like this I can't help but feel that they are taking the piss.

Thisismytimetoshine · 19/06/2020 01:12

Indeed. People previously raising concerns have effectively been told to fuck off.

LeftHandDown · 19/06/2020 01:51

xxsex funily enough I was looking on my town councils pages to see if the PC's were still correct. The Equality Policy has been removed from the websites of town and District council!

May be worth others checking theirs.

Blackdoggotmytonguestill · 19/06/2020 01:56

Given that they’ve thrown out anyone interested in protecting females, and you have to be a member to take part, it’s an ENORMOUS piss-take.
Which is a shame. Because I’d have a bit to say about accessibility for girls with disabilities (as opposed to penises).

Wow their What's the law page makes interesting reading

Please note that while it’s useful to know which laws apply and broadly what they say, current UK laws are not a statement of best practice, nor are they wholly clear. They don’t cover every circumstance we may encounter.

Equality Act 2010 – key points
This law makes discrimination against, harassment of and victimisation of those with certain protected characteristics unlawful.
It works by highlighting nine protected characteristics in respect of which the above behaviours are unlawful, it also explains in which circumstances it is unlawful.
One of these nine characteristics is sex (whether you are male or female) and another is gender reassignment, which in loose terms equates to being trans. More specifically it is defined as ‘a person has the protected characteristic of gender reassignment if the person is proposing to undergo, is undergoing or has undergone a process (or part of a process) for the purpose of reassigning the person’s sex by changing physiological or other attributes of sex’.
Gender reassignment is a self-identified characteristic – there is no need for anyone else to ‘confirm’ someone is trans, or for the trans person to have started any kind of physical or other transition attributed to sex, such as clothing. There is also no need for a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) for those over age 18.
The Equality Act provides options for exemptions. This means that in certain, very limited circumstances, it is permissible to restrict membership to those who share certain protected characteristics.__ __Girlguiding uses an exemption to provide a girl-only space for its young members

334bu · 19/06/2020 06:29

Sorry failed miserably to make Equality Act section bold but it is also a quote from their page. This includes the eye watering dissonance of the last sentence

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 19/06/2020 06:38

Hmmm. Maybe its males guides can contribute in the interests of"equality."

TedsFederationRep · 19/06/2020 06:46

especially where they may have felt excluded or marginalised.

That will be girls, then. Girls who don't want to share single sex spaces with boys. Or men.

If the "diversity and inclusion" audit was widened to include former members, it would also mean those Girlguiding leaders who tried to safeguard girls from being compelled to share single sex spaces with boys or men and who thought letting parents know if such a scenario might arise was a sensible idea.

But the audit doesn't mean those sorts of excluded or marginalised groups, does it, OP?

Have you any idea of what brand image Girlguiding has now?

Dicotyledon · 19/06/2020 13:17

Funny how the world changes. I had to leave brownies because of racism. DD had to leave because she is a girl (with attendant issues).

GrainneWail · 19/06/2020 21:10

Posting to remind myself to come back tomorrow when I'm less tired.

KatieAlcock · 19/06/2020 21:18

Well, I could tell them a few home truths...

When I was a Brownie there was a local unit that met on a weekend afternoon for girls from the local newly immigrant and very conservative Sikh community who generally didn't go out in the evening.

And yet I'm out on my ear for trying to put girls like this first.
