Large public organisation. Question on staff survey:

What is your gender identity?

Man
Woman
Prefer not to say
I identify in another way (please specify): (free text box)

I don't feel like I identify as a woman I just happen to be one. Should I tick woman or put something else in the free text box.

I would tick "prefer not to say"

Ninkanink · 18/06/2020 10:49

Cross out question (oh how I wish we still did things with pen and paper!) or hit the N/A if there is one, and in the box put ‘Sex, not gender. I do not ‘identify’ as anything, I am a woman.’

I think that’s what I would do.

Ninkanink · 18/06/2020 10:49

Ok prefer not to say. And then what I said above in the text box.

OhHolyJesus · 18/06/2020 10:52

Free text box

"I don't have a gender identity
My sex is female (if not other place to put your sex) "

FantaOra · 18/06/2020 10:52

The best thing to do with these types of questions is to prefer not to say.
It undermines the notion of gender identity if people prefer not to get involved in the subject, and makes the data meaningless as they have no idea what you prefer not to say.

Terrible nonsense.

That is a good point too.

But I just couldn’t not comment on it as well.

I’m so fucking done with all this claptrap.

Floisme · 18/06/2020 11:03

I would have to tread carefully unfortunately. I would probably select whichever option came with a text box and say politely that I don't think it's any of their business.

E.g. something along the lines of: 'I think gender identity is a private matter and no more this company's concern than my sexual orientation or religion.'

Yes it's a cop out but here we are.

riverbat · 18/06/2020 11:28

Thanks everyone.

I should have said I can only select one option so I can't tick both 'prefer not to say' and also enter something in the free text box. It is also (supposedly) completely anonymous.

I will go with something along the lines of OhHolyJesus' suggestion.

Should have also clarified- there is no other question on gender or sex, it's just that one question

Free text.

I do not have a "gender identity". I have a SEX. It is female. get a grip you fucking morons

twoHopes · 18/06/2020 11:45

I'd tick "I identify in another way" and then write "n/a (no gender identity)"

Shedbuilder · 18/06/2020 11:49

I would go to the 'I identify in another way' box and write:

I am a woman by virtue of my sex not my gender. I do not identify as a woman, I just am a woman. I don't know what you mean by gender. Would you please explain?

FlippinFumin · 18/06/2020 11:49

My local hospital have been doing such great work during the epidemic and they are now asking for people to become ‘friends’ of the hospital. So I went to register. First question gender. I put N/A and in the dialogue box wrote ‘my sex is female, I do not accept gender ideology’. I am not sure such an uppity woman can be friends with them as they have not contacted me yet.

riverbat · 18/06/2020 15:22

I have responded in the free text box to say I don't have a gender identity but my sex is female and I am therefore a woman.

I will try to remember @Shedbuilder 's point next time and include "Please explain what you mean by gender identity".
