It’s not going down well with the women of stoke!

There are two types of approved design for toilets in the uk;
The first is single sex toilets with shared hand basins. They may include urinals for men, but they must have sanitary waste bins in the cubicles for women.
The second is mixed sex cubical, which must include a sanitary waste bin and a hand basin. The mixed sex design is the one most often offered for disabled access.

If a company, school or organisation wants to offer mixed sex toilets they have to be in addition to the single sex toilets.

www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2020/06/06/intu-puts-kpmg-stand-by-administration-bank-talks-fail/

Intu are in no financial position to have Woke Intu centre managers making decisions.

Any real journalist worth their salt in the Business/Financial press should pick this up.

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 17/06/2020 11:55

What if trans women with a penis want to use the urinals, surely they should be unisex too? The misogyny is extraordinary isn't it, only women having to concede anything no matter what.

DrDavidBanner · 17/06/2020 12:29

I do to @SprogletsMum I've just messaged them. The shopping centre is rubbish enough and I already don't like using the toilets there without making them mixed sex.

TBH I thought they were close to going bump, I keep reading that in the local paper and whenever I go theres another shop shut down. I can't imagine this will help.

PurpleHoodie · 17/06/2020 12:43

It won't help Dr.

And if people locally start pointing out that people are going to increasingly lose their shop/cleaning/parking/etc jobs if people are not happy to shop at intu spaces, then maybe something will be done.

At this stage, a lot of anti-safeguarding trans-activist measures have been thought exercises. As this gets out more and more into the general populations real lives, there will be - for good reasons - a pushback.

That's why there has been a much needed formation of separate LGB and Womens groups who can say "not in my name"
i.e. LGB Alliance. Standing for Women. Fair Play for Women.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/06/2020 12:47

How do they imagine this is going to entice women back into their shopping centre exactly?

runningon · 17/06/2020 12:52

It's blatant discrimination to change the women's loos into uni-sex, but not the men's.
Men now have access to 100% of the toilets, but women having to share their 50% share.
More time wasted waiting in loo queues, but it's ok, we're just women, our time doesn't matter.
(Not even thinking about the safeguarding issue!)

Gwynfluff · 17/06/2020 12:53

I’ve put this on before. I was at a very woke theatre show. Young audience. All the toilets were unisex. Huge queues of women at the one with cubicles and I observed the odd young female going to use the ones with the urinals in. Didn’t see anyone male going to the cubicle only one that was near me.

Unless they have proper unisex provision - cubicles including a sink inside off an open corridor, not sure how this system will help. Potentially will make the cubicled toilets busier and with more queues so more contact and people will still need to go out and use shared basin areas in whichever toilet they use, so what is the rationale?

PurpleHoodie · 17/06/2020 12:54

Pandemic. Loss of ££££££££ billions and ££££¥££££££££ millions.

"People. We want your money to recover. But not you women. Not your family money. You women are not welcome. We don't mind making your trips to our centres as uncomfortable as possible. Intu shopping centres don't want your money. Just the men who do the shopping. Go shop online"

Signed, Intu.

Comefromaway · 17/06/2020 12:57

To be fair the reason is nothing to do with being woke, it's to do with the fact that as part of their covid risk assessment they decided to restrict access to all urinals and make everybody use a cubicle.

But I think they have it badly wrong.

PurpleHoodie · 17/06/2020 13:00

Then they can tape off (or remove) the urinals in the mens toilets, and replace them with all cubicles.

Would take 4 days max.

OnlyTheLangoftheTitBerg · 17/06/2020 13:01

Not one single tweet in support of this move.

They’re claiming it’s to help with social distancing (because putting everyone in one set of bogs rather than spreading them across two is the obvious reaction 🙄) and they’ll revert to women only in due course but I bet if pressure isn’t kept up, they’ll quietly stay unisex.

sleepyhead · 17/06/2020 13:03

Surely a urinal is the ultimate in low-contact peeing? They could put screens up if they're worried about men standing next to each other (although I understand the social convention is not to do that anyway).

Instead, men will stand up in the women's toilets and piss all over the seats, the floor, the back of the pan, and won't put the pissy seat down necessitating extra contact with bodily fluids for women

RedToothBrush · 17/06/2020 13:04

There will be a massive backlash.

A forget which chain decided to do this in their restaurant.

It was reversed as a decision within a fortnight.

TyroSaysMeow · 17/06/2020 13:08

If you feel the need to have a unisex loo and can’t be arsed building an extra one surely the men’s loo is the obvious choice?

Yeah, but that wouldn't validate anyone's feelings, would it?

Had I been thinking of going to Stoke for a shopping spree, this would make me go elsewhere.

ha ha ha. I take it you’ve never been to Stoke (actually up ‘anley duck) or you would never be contemplating a shopping spree there at all!

Comefromaway · 17/06/2020 13:21

@FannyCann

Doesn't Stoke have a big BAME population. This will exclude many women for religious reasons as well.
There is a significant Pakistani/Bangladeshi Muslim population although the shopping centre itself isn’t hugely full of these ethnicities as the older generation especially tend to shop in their own areas/shops.

but it is still a significant minority.

timetest · 17/06/2020 13:54

I’ve messaged them They have now reinstated male and female loos.

SprogletsMum · 17/06/2020 13:56

I've just had this reply from them

It’s important that everyone has access to toilet facilities at intu Potteries but we appreciate that the unisex system raised some concerns. We’ve listened to our visitors’ feedback and we have now reinstated Male and Female toilet facilities.

OnlyTheLangoftheTitBerg · 17/06/2020 13:58

Fair play to them for listening and acting on women’s concerns.

PrincessConsuelaVaginaHammock · 17/06/2020 14:04

Good.

totallyyesno · 17/06/2020 14:06

Great news!
