There's a post floating about twitter that Body Shop sent out to its reps saying;

"As it's pride month and as part of our continued support for the menstrual movement, we had planned a campaign. We felt we had an opportunity to Kick-start the campaign by responding to an ongoing debate on JK Rowling's thread. We disagree with JK Rowling's view and wanted to demonstrate our support for trans and non-binary people."

Not sure if I am allowed to post the twitter name you can find the post under to check it?

I feel like words can't even express how ANGRY I am with them. Kickstart the campaign by mocking a woman online who was already getting rape and death threats as the original twitter poster says.

I wrote to them too and got the standard response. JK Rowling stands with women. The Body Shop has a massive gender pay gap and stands with misogyny.

Suddenly marketing strategies are a dangerous and terrifying morass of competing interests.

Don't worry about them, they're toast. Dead men walking.

TehBewilderness · 17/06/2020 01:32

I just worry for the employees.

@TehBewilderness

I just worry for the employees.
I have a couple of friends who have started to be reps for them :(

Surprise!
"From their gender pay gap report. 94% of store based staff are women. The pay gap is 42%. That's women employed by TBS in the UK paid 42% less than men. Link here: thebodyshop.com/en-gb/gender-pay-gap"

The rep thing is very redolent of MLM, which is notorious for ripping off women. It's also a sign that their high street presence is in trouble.

I won't miss them. I miss them from the 1980s, but since it was bought out they've been rubbish.

AgnesNaismith · 17/06/2020 02:24

I hope they do carry through with this, it’ll be interesting to see how their target demographic take it.

Unless they are trying to reposition themselves to appeal to youngsters.

Either way they’re fucked.

Thisismytimetoshine · 17/06/2020 02:29

it hopes to engage customers more in its activism, inviting them to get involved in provocative conversations, which will play out on social media.
What arseholes. I wonder how many pots of body butter these "provocative" ramblings will sell?

AgnesNaismith · 17/06/2020 02:34

Bit like lush then?

contactusdeletus · 17/06/2020 10:42

So they were going to start a menstruation movement focusing on transwomen (who don't menstruate) and the absolutely tiny minority of non-binary women (who surely aren't much of a money spinner for them). And their opening salvo was to mock JK Rowling for the crime of acknowledging biological sex.

It's like they want the business to go bust.

Beamur · 17/06/2020 10:48

I'm nostalgic for the days when the Body Shop activism was around recycling and ethically sourced ingredients.

Beamur · 17/06/2020 10:52

Kick starting your campaign by having a pop at a woman going public with a personal experience of domestic violence, a campaigner for women and children and an authentic feminist. Nice.

Their gender paygap needs highlighting. Nice campaign phrase OP.

ACatWhoBinds · 17/06/2020 15:26

@contactusdeletus They were focussing on trans men and non binary people rather than trans women and non binary people

Whilst leaving out the whole 99.9% of "people who menstruate", that is; women. Strange focus. Unbelievably stupid focus, actually.
