Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

If you are happy with UK government plans to scrap self-id, please let Boris Johnson and Liz Truss know!

The news that was 'leaked' over the weekend indicates that the UK government has shifted on its previous plans to make it easier for people to change the sex marker on Birth Certificates. Self-id will be abandoned and safeguards will be put in place to protect “safe spaces” for women, including the introduction of new national guidelines on lavatory provision.

The reason for this news being leaked is to test public reaction - does it sounds like most people approve of these decisions, or is there public outrage?

If we are happy with the above news, we should email Boris Johnson and Liz Truss our approval, and maybe even tweet about it if possible.

I've read (but cannot confirm) that Liz Truss will be speaking in Parliament about equalities this Wednesday.

According to the Times article,
No 10 declined to comment but a government source did not dispute the leak: “The report is not yet finalised and the prime minister will have the final say on the recommendations.”

So it's important we let Boris Johnson and also Liz Truss know that we are in agreement with and approve of their plans.

Please email today.

The TRAs are urging their supporters to do the same using hyperbole like it's 'rolling back the human rights of trans people' and it would be a waste of public money for cash strapped councils to hire genital police to patrol public toilets and other unhinged nonsense. 🙄

I think Boris and Liz will be grateful to have some rational emails from us.

I'm going to email today and cc in my MP as well.

WisestIsShe · 16/06/2020 08:35

I've emailed them and my mp too. Good idea. Thanks.

ValancyRedfern · 16/06/2020 09:42

Good idea. Done! I emailed Liz Truss and cc'd my MP and Boris.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 16/06/2020 10:01

I also cc'd David TC Davies, Baroness Nicholson and The Lord Lucas - the Lord who asked those awkward questions about women's toilets not long ago.

I got auto replies from Liz T and Boris J saying they won't look at my email unless I am in their constituency, so I have followed up with my own MP and asked him to ensure they see it from him instead.

NonnyMouse1337 · 16/06/2020 10:09

Thanks for clarifying this BuzzShitbagBobbly. I would hope that considering this is a national issue rather than something specific to a constituency or a personal problem, then they would at least monitor the sort of responses they are getting from people.
Makes sense to ask your MP to pass on the information on your behalf as well.

I've read (but cannot confirm) that Liz Truss will be speaking in Parliament about equalities this Wednesday.

I believe this is it for Wednesday (although the full day's business schedule is not up yet) - looks like half an hour from 11:30. Questions don't look terribly relevant, except one about conversion therapy: calendar.parliament.uk/calendar/Commons/All/2020/6/17/Daily

Great! Thanks for looking that up WoollyHeadedMammoth. :)

I have sent one off to Boris and Liz too. I am sure that they will note the number that are coming through. It is worth sending, even if it is just the copy of the email sent to your own MP.

Sadly, my MP is a Lib Dem in a historical Lib Dem seat so I expect to be told off for my wrong think. But I will do it anyway, that has not stopped me before.

Michelleoftheresistance · 16/06/2020 11:42

Sent to Liz Truss and my own MP. Although I have no doubt I am reiterating the points she and the government were already well aware when making the decision to take this issue out of the long grass and do something about it.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 16/06/2020 12:52

Thing is, though, you - an adult human female - writing an email which clearly and level-headedly reviews specific points, and your objections or support of law and protections for adult human females (and child human females) - demonstrably carries a shit ton more weight than a dozen copy-pasted ranty screeds of "wah wah literal violence killing us men are women suicide bigots #bekind!"

Oh, and you probably pay taxes, have disposable income and vote, too. Not to be sniffed at.

EvilBug · 16/06/2020 13:14

Thank you for this. I had already emailed my MP, so have forwarded it to Liz Truss and Boris Johnson.

CloudyVanilla · 16/06/2020 13:19

This is a relief. Not least because of the sheer lack of logic behind the proposed changes. I hope it is not too upsetting to those who it effects, but I'm glad women have been listened to.

Was very surprised to hear about the Trump medical care overturn too, not sure how I feel about that yet though as it seems to be done to harm trans people rather than to protect women. The guardian was even saying womens rights groups have said the change would stop some women accessing abortions?

CloudyVanilla · 16/06/2020 13:19

Sorry ignore the Trump comment, that's a separate thread recently

CloudyVanilla · 16/06/2020 13:20

Separate thread really* sorry for spamming Blush

teawamutu · 16/06/2020 13:27

I emailed my mp (Tory, helpful) and asked him to pass my thanks to Liz Truss and the PM.

I also emailed Keir Starmer and told him Labour contesting this would be the point at which I leave the party and never vote Labour again.

OhHolyJesus · 16/06/2020 13:29

It's on my list Nonny, my ever growing list... Wink

OhHolyJesus · 16/06/2020 13:29

Oh and I've emailed centre Parcs and M&S this morning to see if they will reconsider their corporate policy.

NonnyMouse1337 · 16/06/2020 13:34

Tell me about it, OHJ!

hypernormal · 16/06/2020 13:34

Don't know everyone's aware, so just thought I'd add that the correct address to contact Liz Truss in her role as Women's and Equalities Officer (if you are not a constituent of hers) is:

[email protected]

and for Boris as PM it's the form:

email.number10.gov.uk/

NonnyMouse1337 · 16/06/2020 13:41

Aha, thanks for correcting that hypernormal! Appreciate it. I should have put more thought into it and checked the email addresses this morning.

OP posts:
refusetobeasheep · 16/06/2020 13:46

emailed both

hypernormal · 16/06/2020 13:48

I only learned this through trial and error myself!

Chrestomanci3 · 16/06/2020 14:11

Have emailed my mp (again - am not hopeful) and Liz Truss in support today

jellybe · 16/06/2020 14:21

For once being in a conservative seat which will near change has a benefit. Will be emailing my MP and CCing BOjo into it.

alittlelower · 16/06/2020 14:22

Emailed them both.

Strange times. Never thought I would email BJ to say well done on anything!
