this sounds like v good news indeed. well done to MN and MNetters.
I will email Keir as a pp said , he does need labour supporters to tell him this is a good thing for women and girls and he should support it.

TedsFederationRep · 14/06/2020 08:10

Happy to, OhHolyJesus, the more the merrier!

The Guardian must be absolutely delighted with this news...oh wait. LOJ will be in despair. Grin

MoltoAgitato · 14/06/2020 08:17

I worry for the backlash. Scotland will now be full steam ahead with self id, simply because if England say White, they must say Black :(

Gncq · 14/06/2020 08:18

[quote Igneococcus]This is also in the Times today about JKR, don't see it linked yet:

"She wouldn’t say that they [Actors in Harry Potter] owe her anything, but she might prefer it if they didn’t do it publicly,” says a friend. “But she’d never object to them saying what they think.”

This from the article made me laugh.

Daniel Radcliffe didn't "say what he thinks". He was told what to say by his PR agents. His job is to read lines, basically lie for a living!

Oxyiz · 14/06/2020 08:22

From that Times article: “I don’t know why anyone would touch this issue,” says a PR industry source. “As a public figure, you are just covering yourself in petrol and setting yourself on fire.”

This might be why so many actors and writers are staying quiet in the wake of a massive Twitter storm - the PR industry is doing a Malcolm Tucker and running frantically through the office shouting "no you DON'T think that!"

Sandybval · 14/06/2020 08:24

Good news.

Lordfrontpaw · 14/06/2020 08:26

What does this mean for Scotland?

PaleBlueMoonlight · 14/06/2020 08:28

I have always thought that the point of consultations was to bring out matters that those proposing changes to the law hadn’t yet thought of. To flush out unintended consequences and points that haven’t been considered. They are not referenda or polls. I would be horrified if the government dealt with it that way. The most important information that the government received doing the consultation was that this most definitely was not a niche issue only affecting the trans community, but that it deeply affected women as well.

This bit from Paris Lees raised an eyebrow:
“People say we’re just talking about biological reality, but it’s biological reality to say someone is old, or overweight. It’s rude to keep bringing that up.”

There you go. We shouldn’t notice that someone is still male (or female) because ‘it’s rude’.

Bluemoooon · 14/06/2020 08:38

HOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!

Never thought I'd see this.

Bluemoooon · 14/06/2020 08:39

Obviously those wanting to self id will move to Scotland. A good thing with their falling population levels.

Oxyiz · 14/06/2020 08:39

“People say we’re just talking about biological reality, but it’s biological reality to say someone is old, or overweight. It’s rude to keep bringing that up.”

Plus, these inconvenient biological facts also have implications don't they? If you're a 47 year old man you can't attend primary school. If you're 24 you can't live in a retirement community. If you're 90 you're possibly too frail to survive skydiving. If you're too overweight you can't fit on some amusement park rides. If you're too underweight you might be treated for anorexia.

We can't identify out of reality.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 14/06/2020 08:42

@PastMyBestBeforeDate

It's probably worth an email of support to your MP if they are a Conservative. I will and I will stress that schools will have to follow the law rather than pressure groups' toolkits.
I will do this too. I’ll make Safeguarding my theme.

that's a silly argument as of course we don't need to mention someones age/ weight in normal life. But sometimes we do. We wouldn't allow a 12 year old to see an 18 film or a 35 year old to attend high school. For me, that is the same as sex - majority of the time, someones sex does not matter and people do not care and you can wear what you like and go where you like BUT sometimes it really does matter - sports, prisons, refuges - and then we need to be able to say no.
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/06/2020 08:44

4930 votes, 95% say no to self-ID. Wow.

Thanks for the share token!

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 14/06/2020 08:44

It's rude to bring it up out of the clear blue sky. If a 60 year old turns up at an event for 18-24 year old, it's not rude to point out they are in the correct age catagory. If an obese person turns up to a support group for people who are underweight, it's not rude to point out that they're in the wrong group. Pointing out that someone is old or overweight if they are not only insisting that they are young and thin but also require all the resources set aside for that group, is not rude (although let's be clear here, we are talking about a group with more power and privaledge identifying into a group with less in order to steal their resources and change their language, so the old to young, fat to thin analogy is back to front)

HPFA · 14/06/2020 08:49

Just watched Nick Thomas-Symonds (Labour Shadow Home Secretary) on Sophie Ridge.

"Trans Rights are Human Rights"

"This is a very sensitive area and we should be looking for a way to move forward with consensus taking everyone's views into account" etc etc

"Not sure that the govt announcing policy through newspaper headlines" is a good thing. )This we can all agree on - this Dominic Cummings style of announcing policy through headlines is a pile of shit.)

So - as with many issues - a bit of a fudge! BUT - as is becoming a pattern with Keir Starmer - he may hit a sweet spot with where the public is.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/06/2020 08:50

“People say we’re just talking about biological reality, but it’s biological reality to say someone is old, or overweight. It’s rude to keep bringing that up.”

Bloody ageist to imply there's anything wrong with being old. We're on the verge of quite hoping people will ask us if we want discounts, and sure as heck age matters when it comes to medical matters, insurance, pensions.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 14/06/2020 08:51

"This is a very sensitive area and we should be looking for a way to move forward with consensus taking everyone's views into account" etc etc

Ah, the lovely sound of pedals reversing.

Pinkyyy · 14/06/2020 08:52

Thanks so much for explaining this, and thanks for the link @HandsOffMyRights. I have been really worried recently about men being able to access women's spaces so this is huge for me.

testing987654321 · 14/06/2020 08:54

Agree with writing to Keir and to any other MPs, we need to let them know that women from all political sides don't want this.

BringbackLang · 14/06/2020 08:57

*"This is a very sensitive area and we should be looking for a way to move forward with consensus taking everyone's views into account" etc etc

Ah, the lovely sound of pedals reversing.'*

Yup. Absolutely.

Shame they couldn't have done this when we begged them to listen. Shame their spineless MPs called us bigots, transphobes etc. Shame them kicked good people out of the party.

No labour you don't get my vote. I will not forgive you for what you did.

HPFA · 14/06/2020 09:01

Ah, the lovely sound of pedals reversing.

Who would ever guess the Labour Party was led by a top class lawyer?
