Full thread is

So, you want my thoughts on Cho Chang? Okay, here goes...(thread)

(Link to gofundme for 'Homeless Black Trans women fund' which originally wanted $10k for six TW prostitutes but now has $2m, to whence will be directed is far from clear) [link omitted because apparently that triggers an autodelete on MN, even in a critical context like this]

Link to www.change.org/p/boris-johnson-more-protection-for-black-trans-women-uk

[Petition to, er, Boris Johnson, filled with outright blatant criminal lies such as

'Black Trans women have a life expectancy of only 35 years'
(Lie, this is not true anywhere in the world and is just a made up stat thick or mendacious people like to post)

' I am being careful with information, but in 2019 26 transgender women in the UK were murdered and the majority of those were POC.'

[Most years NO transwomen are murdered in the UK and the numbers are so small that the ethnicity is not even a measurable statistic - the idiot who created this petition took stats from the US where black biological males, both those who identify as trans and those who don't, are murdered (almost exclusively by other black males )in large numbers]

Link to
www.ukblackpride.org.uk/ which represents black LGBT people

Then

Link to www.vice.com/amp/en_us/article/n7wnbb/tony-mcdade-nina-pop-how-to-help

[Which is an article published by Vice, which posts vast amounts of TRA propaganda, and references the killing of Tony McDade, a black transman who stabbed the nextdoor neighbour to death before being shot by police, and Nina Pop, aka Jared Tipler, a black TW who was stabbed to death by a black man, and it's about how you need to send (dubious) organisations money to help black trans people - mostly in paying for sex changes and bail money]

Then

#AsiansForBlackLives

Virtue signalling with bullshit off FB and from a Google search is easy it seems. Facts are a little harder. No 'slay queen' responses and 55k retweets for JK Rowling when she posts things that are actually true.

Even though Katie Leung is a rich and privileged woman (private education in Scotland, presumably enough cash from Harry Potter to work at what she chooses), when she's been directly ASKED about her perspectives as an East Asian woman and alleged stereotyping in names like 'Cho Chang', she feels that it's more relevant to redirect the conversation to something she evidently knows nothing about - black males. This is apparently 'feminism'.

(BTW the petition continues:

"We need white cis people to speak up with them as their own voices are often shut down or completely ignored. Its actually quite hard to even find reliable statistics (most likely due to lack of recording) so I am being careful with information, but in 2019 26 transgender women in the UK were murdered and the majority of those were POC. We need to do better and so does our government. Black Trans Women are endangered and they urgently need attention and justice! "

The woman who posted it is on Facebook and appears to be white, and works in a pub in Norfolk. I'm not really sure where she got the idea that black transwomen need her voice.

Leung has thousands of Tweets and hitherto none about L, G, B or T. I don't know why she thinks some quick links off FB are more valid than what she actually lives - being a Scottish-Chinese woman.

BatShite · 09/06/2020 14:01

Meh. Given black transwomen are used continually by TRAs its about time some donations were made to actual back transwomen, rather than more to 'white TRA go fundme for taxi fares' accounts. This response is..a bit odd though.

BatShite · 09/06/2020 14:03

' I am being careful with information, but in 2019 26 transgender women in the UK were murdered and the majority of those were POC.'

This though is obvious bollocks. Which is easily refuted with a simple search. Just nonsense.

HermioneWeasley · 09/06/2020 14:06

Someone else who’s revealed herself to be an idiot

All these people who are only where they are because of JKR turning on her. I hope she writes a HP follow up with juicy roles and refuses to cast any of the ungrateful weasels.

Durgasarrow · 09/06/2020 14:44

This young lady had no problem taking the role and the money and now she wants to virtue signal. She doesn't even bother to see if the information she posts is factually correct (US not UK). Aside from the fact that there is no evidence that these people were killed because they were transwomen. Some were victims of random crime, some were in fights with weapons, some were killed doing sex work, some were killed by family, friends, or lovers, some while involved with drugs, some in some other unfortunate way that more likely had to do with the sad fact that being a young black male is dangerous in the US.

MadameButterface · 09/06/2020 14:53

Katie Leung's an actress who played a minor role in a big film franchise, not a political leader, so I'm a bit confused about why she can't just put whatever she likes on her own twitter tbh. what do people feel they are owed by her that she is not giving them?

CourtneyLurve · 09/06/2020 14:57

The irony being that she will have faced far more prejudices as an Asian and a woman.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 09/06/2020 15:40

I'm a bit confused about why she can't just put whatever she likes on her own twitter tbh. what do people feel they are owed by her that she is not giving them?

I don't think anyone has suggested they are owed something by her.

She chose to respond the mud slinging about her character name being racist with some lies hastily cribbed off Facebook.

OP posts:
SunsetBeetch · 09/06/2020 15:45

That's just bizarre

Clymene · 09/06/2020 15:48

Well she's made herself look a total melt

MadameButterface · 09/06/2020 15:52

She chose to respond the mud slinging about her character name being racist with some lies hastily cribbed off Facebook.

how do you think she should have responded?

BaronessFloralBunting · 09/06/2020 15:56

She can respond as she likes.

As the thousands of frothing abusive tweeters will agree, a woman may post as she chooses, but she will be critiqued for it. At least the posters here are reading and answering the content, rather than issuing threats of rape and violence.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 09/06/2020 16:48

She can respond as she likes, or not at all, given that she was being shamed on some level into answering for mud flung at another woman for not accepting that men are women. She didn't owe anyone a response when her racial identity was being weaponised against another woman.

Clearly she thought 'people are asking me about my East Asian heritage, but now it's BLM and JK Rowling was transphobic' and decided to post some random shit about black transwomen, despite knowing nothing about it, and transparently so.

It's interesting how a Scottish Chinese woman and a white woman from Norfolk both end up posting bullshit relating to men on another continent.

An aside but I understand that BLM has specific goals in the US, to defund the police, along with raising lots of money. These goals might make sense in that there are elected sheriffs, the likes of Joe Arpaio, who are straightforward white supremacists, so defunding might seem a better goal than anything else (NY has just announced it will move funding away from the police ) especially when you have a sort of military/prison complex with one of the highest incarceration rates in the world, as well as massively longer prison sentences in the UK.

But in the UK our police are avoiding arresting rapists for fear of community relations, and endorsing child castration trans charities, so it hardly seems likely that the specific goals of the US movement could be relevant in the UK, especially when we have a much much smaller black population.

I'm sure some people have specific UK goals, though I've not seen what they are, but mostly it seems to be bandwagon virtue signaling without any clear and achievable goals, or even as here, just straight up lies.

Some earnest queer woman in the US gave JKR a list of US woke charities she should donate to.

It amused me because, no matter how woke, so many Americans can't help thinking the world revolves around them. Grin

Needmoresleep · 09/06/2020 17:07

Her parents are from Hong Kong and she speaks Cantonese. Lots going on there. Yet nothing is said.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 09/06/2020 17:15

That's more likely to damage her job prospects. Spreading fake news on Twitter on behalf of TRAs is free woke points with no chance of being blacklisted

OP posts:
Thinkingabout1t · 09/06/2020 18:04

I wondered why people were accusing JKR of racism for calling a character "Cho Chang". So I did a bit of searching.

People were moaning that (a) it was a lazy stereotypical name for a Chinese character and (b) it wasn't even a possible name in Chinese. Come on people, it can't be both!

Needless to say, there's nothing wrong with the name.

At imnotdoingmyhomework.tumblr.com/post/48091653036/fucknosocialjusticewarriors-objectorbit
a commenter called Meredith Yang writes "I am Chinese, I grew up in Guangdong and now live in Beijing. ... Both Cho and Chang ARE Chinese words pronounced in the Cantonese dialect (the major dialect spoken in Guangdong and Hong Kong) ... And SURPRISE: both Cho and Chang can be used as first name AND last name in Chinese."

At www.tor.com/2013/04/17/to-jk-rowling-from-cho-chang/
a commenter called Xiaoshun Zeng, apparently also of Chinese background, links to the Tumblr post above and says "all you people who are criticizing J.K. Rowling have no idea what you’re talking about".

So there was nothing racist or incorrect about Cho Chang's name. Discovering that took me about 10 minutes. Twitter sounds like the most pointless social-media platform imaginable.

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 09/06/2020 18:05

I'm a bit confused about why she can't just put whatever she likes on her own twitter tbh.

Do you not think that blindly copy pasting made up propaganda/misinformation is a problem then?

Perpetuating a climate of fear that has no basis in fact harms the people she is posting in support of.
