Daniel Radcliffe responds to JK Rowling’s tweets: “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people”

Daniel Radcliffe Responds to J.K. Rowling’s Tweets on Gender Identity – The Trevor Project

FULL STATEMENT

I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that is really not what this is about, nor is it what’s important right now. While Jo is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honored to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment.

Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I. According to The Trevor Project, 78% of transgender and nonbinary youth reported being the subject of discrimination due to their gender identity. It’s clear that we need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities, and not cause further harm.

I am still learning how to be a better ally, so if you want to join me in learning more about transgender and nonbinary identities check out The Trevor Project’s Guide to Being an Ally to Transgender and Nonbinary Youth. It’s an introductory educational resource that covers a wide range of topics, including the differences between sex and gender, and shares best practices on how to support transgender and nonbinary people.

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

Love always,
Dan

Great post.

I know for people here, all of this seems obvious. But people who post here either were the sort of people who right away twigged to something odd about it all, or for many they supported gender ideology up until something happened to create a lightbulb moment - or maybe even just a sort of slow dawning of awareness about what was going on.

TWAW has been so widely accepted and repeated by the "right" people, it's not really different than other slogans that people think of as indisputable and basic principles, which really aren't.

Lordfrontpaw · 09/06/2020 13:19

Did he say there was no 'falling out'? She's a better woman than me. I'd be packing up a glitter bomb...

CaveMum · 09/06/2020 13:20

FFS, not Richard Osman, I thought he was a sensible man. The comedians I “get” they’re always falling over themselves to show how woke they are so I’m not surprised by them.

FavouriteFightingFrenchman · 09/06/2020 13:21

I'm so glad this thread is here. Whilst it's ruined my day to give this headspace Grin I am so glad I'm not alone in being afraid and angry.

OvaHere · 09/06/2020 13:22

@merrymouse

The Daniel Radcliffe tweet came across as though he hadn't actually written it himself.

I'm sure he didn't write it.

As he says, he has bought the line that the only people qualified to talk about sex are trans activists.

If only he had read the Stonewall guidelines he would realise that we are all trans.

It's not even a tweet. As far as I can tell he isn't on twitter (or removed his account in anticipation).

Which just makes it all the more cowardly knowing he can step back without accountability whilst JK receives all manner of name calling, rape and death threats.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Radcliffe knows nothing of what he speaks about and was asked to do it by the org he is a patron for. I very much doubt he wrote all that statement himself.

He also has the gall to take ownership of the HP books as if he wrote them himself. To think it's okay to apologise on behalf of a successful woman for art he didn't create is the height of mansplaining sexism.

Fanthorpe · 09/06/2020 13:22

Osman has got teenagers, so probably like Ross has had it explained to him by them.

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 09/06/2020 13:22

There was a time when male actors knew what a woman was and knew she wasn't allowed on the stage, not least because only men could act and produce the necessary dramatic gestures to indicate female identity. They were quite literally better at being women than actual women.

Wishing Kelly-Jay well and hope she's had a nice cup of tea and a lie down. Well said, Girl.

TheMarzipanDildo · 09/06/2020 13:23

‘Queer baiting’ confuses me no end. Apparently characters can’t be bicurious/confused about their sexuality/vaguely flirtatious with someone of the same sex anymore if they’re not gay and out. Also all characters that might be gay or have a thing for each other MUST get together. Which for one thing is not how real life works.
Plus with FBAWTFT we are only on the second of five films and I think the illusion to Dumbledore and Grindelwald having a ‘past’ with sexual undertones is pretty clear!

merrymouse · 09/06/2020 13:24

Ask any of those people, Osman, Radcliffe, any of them, whether or not convicted male rapist should be housed in female prisons, and they will wonder what the fuck you're talking about.

They only view this through the lens of 'being kind', not legislation and human rights law.

The language encourages this - 'be an ally'. Support your 'siblings'. Nobody can explain what 'trans' means, but they can tell you that trans people are a minority who are often suicidal.

However, legislation and human rights law requires clear definitions and must treat people equally, even people who aren't 'nice'.

Fuck me. I have never seen Posie Parker like this.

I don't usually use words like magnificent, but I'm bloody well going to.

Her rage, her fury at the injustice, her articulation, and her incandescent tears.

And, of course, the irrefutable arguments. Instantly comprehending the undeniable misogyny and evident ignorance.

It needs to go viral.

And I guarantee you, these people will eventually hang their heads in shame.

Lamahaha · 09/06/2020 13:27

@Collidascope

my daughter says she attended school with the boy who actually got the part of Harry Potter. I won't mention his name here, but she knows it. The boy who actually won the part. At the last minute, Dan was shooed in.

I'd never heard this before. So do you know why the original boy didn't get the part or why DR did?

Sorry, no. That's all she told me, this morning. But one of her friends used to go out with the boy who got the part.
TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/06/2020 13:28

I suspect that in saying there's no falling out Radcliffe is once again speaking for Rowling, as I can't imagine anyone wanting to stay friends with someone who behaved as he's just done.

(That's if they were friends to begin with, which seems unlikely. He doesn't seem particularly intelligent or interesting.)

Fanthorpe · 09/06/2020 13:29

No Spoke, I’m not responding, so many of the people I like and follow, and who follow me are supporting TWAW. I’ve unfollowed lots of people very reluctantly, largely after they expressed some sort of gleefulness. Someone I really like, a male writer tweeted ‘100 points for Gryffindor!’ under the DR tweet and I just had to unfollow. Maybe I’ll go back when it stops. I love Twitter, I get lots of news and info there, I don’t want to give it up.

The one that was very hard to read was ‘scratch a terf, uncover a racist’ and a whole thread of examples of how the two are related.

Shedbuilder · 09/06/2020 13:30

MorrisZapp, do you realise what you just said?

I do appreciate him saying it's not a falling out though. He's mature enough at least to say that while he disagrees with her, he still respects her. That's a huge step against cancel culture

It's up to JKR to decide whether this is a falling out. It's not up to the man who punches a woman in the guts — the woman who has made him, his reputation and his fortune, without whom he'd probably be working in a call centre — to tell her whether they've fallen out or not. Jeez.

CheerfuIPotato · 09/06/2020 13:32

Posie’s latest video is fantastic. It absolutely should go viral. I hope she’s reading this.

CaveMum · 09/06/2020 13:35

The usual suspects are tweeting about this thread, explains the sudden rush of “JK smells of poo” type posts.

CuppaTea86 · 09/06/2020 13:36

Long time lurker on FWR, have never posted here before.
I've just read a PP upthread mention about pushback against the term FGM. Are we not even allowed the use of the word 'female' as a replacement for 'woman' (the actual xx kind)?

Would the TRAs and allies resist if we continued to talk about "issues affecting females" e.g FGM, female cancer screening, female sex trafficking etc, without having to state 'ciswomen and transmen and non-binary' but just stating Females as a collective noun.

FWIW I absolutely don't think we should have to give up 'woman' as a word to describe adult human females or conduct linguistic gymnastics when we all know which sex class is being affected by these issues.

sunshinesupermum · 09/06/2020 13:36

Why not say transgender men are men

I've wondered this too. It's always about transwomen (who were born with male sexual organs)

BatShite · 09/06/2020 13:37

'Having talked to some people (OK,my daughters) re my earlier tweet, I’ve come to accept that I’m not in a position to decide what is or isn’t considered transphobic. It’s a wildly sensitive subject. Let’s keep talking.

People who aren't trans have no say in whats transphobic. Yet it is fine for men to tell women what a woman is. Interesting double standard there.

willowflower19 · 09/06/2020 13:37

I haven't read this entire thread, so there's a chance this has already been covered, but I've never had this question answered before a thread on trans women has been deleted.

Can somebody please explain why some women have such a visceral reaction to being called a cis woman?
There are a lot of emotional posts here, a few of which are incredibly transphobic and I will dismiss out of hand. But I'd like to ask those of you who've given your opinion without being offensive- why do you consider this term pejorative?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 09/06/2020 13:39

It would be polite of you to at least tell the people you plan to dismiss out of hand who they are before asking them to do extra work for you that you fully intent to dismiss.

Focusanddetermination · 09/06/2020 13:40

My YT said Posie's account is restricted and you need a G Suite account to view it?

PrincessConsuelaVaginaHammock · 09/06/2020 13:41

Radcliffe is a mediocrity. I'll pay no more attention to him than to any other male who thinks they're entitled to give away what was never theirs.

littlbrowndog · 09/06/2020 13:41

Wow posie. Awesome. Shows the anger and disgust we are all feeling 💪💪💪💪

lucymaudmonty · 09/06/2020 13:41

@willowflower19 because it asked me to reduce myself to a subcategory of woman. I believe I am a woman. That is the truth. I would not ask other people to agree that Shakespeare wrote Oliver Twist, or that Madrid is the capital of France. But I am not able to say that I am a woman?
