Scotland - Check your child's School Guidance

For Women Scotland are looking for information about the guidance being used in schools. You can get in touch with them directly at [email protected].

The entire newsletter (with links) can be read at mailchi.mp/1c0d4ab1e1dd/onwards-from-the-grr-bill.

The relevant bit for schools is copied below.

----

We have been delighted to hear the news of many councils in England withdrawing problematic guidance for schools which potentially breaches children's rights. Meanwhile in Scotland the guidance written by LGBT Youth is still being used by many schools. The replacement guidance promised by the Cabinet Secretary last June has not been delivered and we have received confirmation from the Government that, due to their focus on the COVID-19 pandemic, they "do not have a revised timetable to publish the guidance".

We have written to John Swinney, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, requesting that the "not legal" LGBT Youth guidance is immediately withdrawn and suggesting that, for the moment, schools revert to the EHRC Technical Guidance for Schools in Scotland. (www.equalityhumanrights.com/en/publication-download/technical-guidance-schools-scotland)

It would be a great help if you could check with your child's school what policies they have in place for when the children return in August. We are also increasingly concerned about the content of LGBT Youth's Charter Awards for schools and would appreciate any detailed information of what advice they are providing on the Equality Act.

This is a great idea, although I'm not in Scotland, the letter templates from Safe Schools Alliance might help.

Although SSA are doing fab work with the schools guidance, I'd be careful when using their templates as the education system and transgender guidance are a bit different in Scotland.

OhHolyJesus · 08/06/2020 14:34

Good point Betsy - maybe the key points could be reframed if they apply but in different ways in Scotland?

I always like a template, saves me having to think up the wording from scratch but that's me being lazy!

Good luck to all who are writing, only wish I could help but not my part of the world sadly.

The SNP regional assembly un Scotland has just redefined “woman” to include any man who claims to be one.
Good luck trying to get anywhere with this shower of woke idiots in trying to safeguard schoolgirls.

Which region do you mean Babdoc? Is it not all of Scotland then? That s good news at least!
