We have been delighted to hear the news of many councils in England withdrawing problematic guidance for schools which potentially breaches children's rights. Meanwhile in Scotland the guidance written by LGBT Youth is still being used by many schools. The replacement guidance promised by the Cabinet Secretary last June has not been delivered and we have received confirmation from the Government that, due to their focus on the COVID-19 pandemic, they "do not have a revised timetable to publish the guidance".
We have written to John Swinney, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, requesting that the "not legal" LGBT Youth guidance is immediately withdrawn and suggesting that, for the moment, schools revert to the EHRC Technical Guidance for Schools in Scotland. It would be a great help if you could check with your child's school what policies they have in place for when the children return in August. We are also increasingly concerned about the content of LGBT Youth's Charter Awards for schools and would appreciate any detailed information of what advice they are providing on the Equality Act.
