One of those is the current resurgence of transphobia in the UK, much of it fuelled by high-profile and prominent individuals with large social media followings.

People on both the right and left of the political spectrum in Scotland and the rest of the UK have taken to social media to denounce trans women in particular, suggesting trans women should not be allowed to use single-sex spaces.

Many misgender trans women, say that only women who were born female have the right to identify as female, and so on. Other slurs include referring to trans women as "men in dresses."

These "gender-critical" activists have taken aim at many leading LGBTQ charities and media organisations, including GLAAD, Stonewall, Pink News, and the UK charity Mermaids, which supports transgender young people. Even the Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre has found itself in the firing line.

The author of this piece used to work for Buzzfeed. She specialises in posting disgusting lies on Twitter, such as that 'TERFs' would make 'revenge attacks' on trans people for 'TERFs' being attacked (which never happens, obviously), and excusing and minimising violence by transpeople.

I disagree strongly. I'm an older lesbian in a long-term relationship and I don't recognise this at all. In fact it seems to me that it's mainly older lesbians and older women generally, schooled in the feminism of the 70s and 80s, before feminists were supposed to be nice and kind and Gender Studies replaced Women's Studies, who've been at the GC coalface. Look at the women who started Woman's Place UK and you'll see older women. Look at the trans allies at Pride and most of them are younger, many of them students.

Us older ones have been warning the younger ones for years about the dangers trans ideology poses and have been laughed at and called dinosaurs and cold-shouldered by younger lesbians. Thank goodness, at last, a lot of them are beginning to get it.

Many of us have been fighting off trans presence at our events, club nights, in our bars and at our festivals for years — when lots of young lesbian women have been urging us to be kind and let their trans friends in.

Shedbuilder, Nonny was specifically referencing in her comment those particular older lesbians who are TRA allies, not all older lesbians, many of whom, as you rightly say, are radical feminists/GC.

Hello Shedbuilder, I wasn't implying in my comment that older lesbians in general were fully supportive of trans ideology. I meant that whenever I come across an older lesbian who fully supports the TWAW stance, she is usually in a long-term relationship (with an actual woman, no surprises there...) and therefore has no skin in the game. She can afford to act like a big trans ally because she never has to deal with the consequences of it. She would never have to learn to tolerate a 'female penis' in her life, therefore she is able to sing its praises. It's the younger lesbians who are figuring out their sexuality that are being brainwashed and pressured into thinking they are transphobic for not wanting to date or have sex with trans women. It's younger lesbians having to deal with all the males on lesbian dating apps. It's younger lesbians being told by everyone around them that they need to be kind and accepting of trans women otherwise they are awful human beings.
The older lesbian who is adamant that TWAW knows deep down that she would never actually date or have sex with a trans woman, but is happy to pretend she is very evolved and happy to throw younger lesbians under the bus to prove it.

Problem is, Nonnymouse, that I can't think of a single older lesbian who is TWAW. Hold on a moment. I can. There's one whose son has come out as trans and I suspect she's rather half-heartedly upholding trans ideology because he's her precious only child and she doesn't want to lose him.

Apart from her all the lesbian trans allies I know are under 40-ish. And the younger they are the more TWAW they tend to be. I don't want anyone here to think that there are loads of older lesbians who support TWAW because in my experience there aren't.

I need sex based rights regardless of my identity. If I could just identify out of being female, I wouldn't need sex based rights.

Shedbuilder I've come across quite a few over 40 - I don't know them well though, it's through a wider social network. However, they are more likely to call themselves gay or queer, instead of lesbian. I suspect that plays a factor in their views. And also they might have family members who are trans and feel like they have to show support.

You are right though, that the vast majority of older lesbians are not into the whole TWAW thing and as you move towards the younger age range, the acceptance of trans ideology increases with women insisting it is gender that defines sexual orientation instead of, you know, actual sex!

There is a chap on there saying that single sex things have never existed...?
