Women's Human Rights Campaign (WHRC) invite you to a Webinar on Sat 6th June from 3-5pm UK time. Sheila Jeffreys, British author of Unpacking Queer Politics, Ariel Pereira, founder of Detransition Chile, and Julia Beck, US lesbian campaigner, will talk about queer politics and how it affects women, girls, lesbians and feminist campaigning.
In her 2002 book, Sheila Jeffreys argues that the strong lesbian feminist movement of the 1970s, which was able to articulate a philosophy and practice that distinguished lesbian politics from gay male politics, was submerged in the 1990s beneath a gay male agenda called queer politics. How has this developed now in 2020?
Ariel Pereira, a young Chilean radical feminist lesbian, will tell us about the lack of options for young lesbians and the pressure they face to transition in today’s queer Chile. Having detransitioned herself, Ariel will talk also about her group Detransition Chile.
Julia Beck, a US lesbian activist, was booted off a Baltimore LGBTQ Commission after refusing to refer to a male rapist with female pronouns. How has queer politics impacted US lesbian rights? Does it matter if lesbians call themselves queer rather than lesbian? Does the Q in LGBT exclude lesbians?
There will be time for questions.
