UK ban on gay conversion therapy

There is an article in the Independent. This says the gay conversion therapy measures are two years overdue.

From the article it is clear what Stonewall’s focus is: “Laura Russell, director of campaigns, policy and research at Stonewall told The Independent: "Any form of 'therapy' that attempts to change someone's sexual orientation or gender identity is unethical and wrong.”

I would imagine the difficulty of defining gender identity in the potential legislation isn’t speeding things up. It seems that homosexual is a concept that Stonewall now struggles to define.

Telling lesbians to include heterosexual males in their sexual preference is homophobic conversion therapy. As is pretending a lesbian is same 'gender' attracted not same sex attracted.

They can't co-exist. Hence why Stonewall ties it's self in knots and has to delete tweets where they accidentally forgot themselves for a second and mentioned same sex attraction.

In terms of the abuses involved in conversion therapy, specific legislation was always going to be a ticklish business. Things like corrective rape, which I endured, are already obviously illegal, and the other end of the scale, which can be as non invasive as talking to a counsellor or 'receiving prayer' might well be ineffective, but legislating against people wishing really hard for something unlikely or impossible is going to be bad law.

So while I welcome moves to make conversion therapy something viewed with disdain and rejected by fair minded people, legislating to that end is something to be approached very carefully.

Which is most certainly not going to happen if you get the most keen conversion therapy fans - the transgender promoters - to get an extreme form of conversion therapy enshrined as the only kind allowed.

So wait when a teenage girl says she's a lesbian we can't convince her she's a boy as that would be conversion therapy to make her 'heterosexual'.

OhHoly, no, that's the one version of the therapy that will be allowed. Sneaky, innit?

This is my feeling, it's difficult and fraught. Just as gender is now being included, I also wonder if the idea of conversion therapy could be widened in other ways? For example, dealing with fetishes? I'm not entirely comfortable with over-riding the goals of a person seeking therapy either, and that seems like it could be a possibility here.

as i know, conversion therapy on gender identity include
therapist saying no to trans kids and finding why she/he want to be opposite gender.
in canada, so there's only one way route for kids and parents.

and conversion therapy it self, if it only include counselling not medical/illegal method, i can't understand why adults have to be banned in conversion therapy.

if someone really want that, think him/herself need that,
he/she has right to access that.

Replacing sex with gender is like replacing modern medicine with prayers. Believing it yourself is foolish but demanding that others share your beliefs is inexcusable.

The government are running a survey on this. There has been a petition to ban conversion therapy, and now the House of Commons have tweeted a survey to gather opinion. Closing date mid July.

Gay conversion therapy is disgusting whatever form it takes. And the parents should be sued by their children.
