I've never been to a Leon restaurant so have no idea about the style but gather from a quick google they have branched out into products.
I was a bit horrified to see the imagery used on the packaging.
Or am I overreacting?

Why do we have to have sexy ladies over everything FGS

They think the retro thing makes it classy rather than seedy is my guess

Boring.

Lambside · 17/05/2020 18:49

I know right! To my mind it's soft porn @1948 with no reason to be there.

Looks like she is holding a pair of... well. Itsu (I think it’s them) used to have a women’s beach volleyball on their outside posters - so not the want power lifters or shot putters... the skinny blonde women on eensy weensy bikinis diving for the sand. I often wondered how the decision was made to sponsor that particular sport.

StatementKnickers · 19/05/2020 10:13

I can't really get too worked up about this. They've used the same motif on their other dips. I don't see the point of it but I don't think there's a huge overlap between "people more likely to buy something if it has a sexy lady on it" and "people who to buy vegan dips".

I actually quite like the whole ‘god/goddess’ perfect body images in art.

Of course if I lived off takeaway foods I wouldn’t look like that (because I obviously do now 😉)

But since they now do very little veggie food and waaaay more vegan (come on, where’s the cheese???) I don’t go there any more (well pre lockdown although the one up the road is open).

BeetrootRocks · 19/05/2020 10:26

It's hummus! Hardly a specialist product.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 19/05/2020 10:35

It does look like something from another era.
I have seen controversy about this beer label, but it tends to get a bit of a pass because it's "vintage"

It looks like they're emulating the advertising style of the 1920s and 1930s. It could be a lot worse if they'd emulated other aspects of the time.

Is it meant to correlate with the 'extra-virgin' bit on the olive oil ?

HermioneWeasley · 19/05/2020 13:13

It’s gross and completely unnecessary

BeetrootRocks · 19/05/2020 14:40

I'm always really disappointed when brands I like go down this tired old path of slapping sexy ladies on things.

When people say 'sex sells' what it translates to is naked women because the straight male gaze is the be all and end all.

Lambside · 19/05/2020 18:08

IMO it's unnecessary. It's irrelevant to the product. It's sexist and it's on hummus in the aisles in supermarkets where children see lightly draped women as a way to sell stuff.
I love art nouveau but now I do cringe slightly at the preponderance of pert nude or barely covered women. They are for the male gaze.

The chickpea looks like a massive arse too. Ugh. I really go out of my way to avoid sexist crap these days, have enough of it I can’t get away from. sorry Leon!

BeetrootRocks · 19/05/2020 20:56

It looks like an arse/ bollocks/ vulva hybrid.

I'm sure the suggestive shape of the chickpea is entirely accidental.

Antibles · 20/05/2020 07:05

lightly draped women as a way to sell stuff.

It's this. ^ Regressive.

I await the taramasalata or summat decorated with a scantily clad Adonis. It would be unfair for half the human population to go unrepresented on Leon's foodstuffs.

1066vegan · 20/05/2020 07:52

I like Leon. It's fast food but decent quality. That image seems to fit with their other branding (sort of 50s Mediterranean feel). I can't get worked up about it. There's far worse anti-women stuff about.

ScrapThatThen · 20/05/2020 08:01

If you look at what the world would look like if it was men pouting on posters and featuring in translucent clothing on hummus, brilliantly done in the film 'I am not an easy man' then it's easier for everyone to see this for what it is. I wonder what male imagery they use on their products.

nauticant · 20/05/2020 08:06

It's Art Nouveau style advertising that's supposed to signify classy times. Nostalgia for the fin de siècle.

RumbaswithPumbaas · 20/05/2020 08:25

Nice long use by date though Grin

testing987654321 · 20/05/2020 08:27

It's using a naked woman as an object yet again.

That's it. To sell food. And we've got a choice of feeling permanently angry, or just let it wash over us because life is too short.

Or I suppose the best option is writing to them and asking them to change it.

TheChampagneGalop · 20/05/2020 11:38

nauticant I get it what they are aiming for but a pretty art noveau style packaging could feature clothed people, as well as no people.

TheChampagneGalop · 20/05/2020 11:40

Constant exposure to images of nude and objectified women is tiresome, I fully understand why OP doesn't like it.
