A tweet that middle class people should pay their cleaner to not work quickly descended into 'rich women paying poor women to clean their homes.' So frustrating the casual sexism. Why is it assumed women are responsible for cleaning their homes and not men. Most working women who can afford a cleaner do so because they have 3 jobs - their work, their childcare and their household. Why aren't the men they are married to taking more household responsibility?

I can think of at least 4 columnists who write for the Spectator and the Guardian. I am sure there are more.

EmpressLangClegInChair · 18/05/2020 15:43

I think of the Guardian as a left-wing, woman-hating rag.

RoyalCorgi · 18/05/2020 16:19

OJ shared a link to a hardship fund for domestic workers.

Of course he did, the virtue-signalling little shit.

merrymouse · 18/05/2020 16:38

I find it leaves me pretty much exhausted because invariably the discussion will lead to white women being the victim or something about white privilege not existing because someone will pop up to say they grew up in a sink estate with a tin of beans between all 10 members of their family therefore white privilege isn't a thing

This is exactly my point - this logic used to argue that Meghan Markle can't possibly have been the target of racism and a comparatively highly paid BBC presenter can't possibly have been the target of sexism, because look at all these other people who have less privilege.

To maintain the social order, privilege must be restricted.

BlackberryCane · 18/05/2020 17:43

Ok, so I thought Owen would do a shit Guardian column about this rather than go on the radio, but either way now both of them have managed to get more work and attention using cleaners as a weapon to throw at each other. Called it days ago.

Langsdestiny · 20/05/2020 12:51

Oh his face on the show when he was asked if he has a cleaner has made my day.

WTFSeriously · 20/05/2020 12:52

This is a thing of beauty

Deliriumoftheendless · 20/05/2020 12:59

Ah but he didn’t employ the cleaner.

Must live with middle class women with good jobs.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/05/2020 13:01

That face is quite something Grin

BlackberryCane · 20/05/2020 13:15

Bwahahahaha!

But did the silly fucker not realise he was bound to get asked that question? Walked right into that one!

Datun · 20/05/2020 13:45

Heaven forbid that a 'middle class white professional' woman should speak up about inequality...

"Some fuckwit would call her a karen.."

Quite a number of people calling Baroness Nicholson a Karen for speaking up about women's and children's rights.

BlackberryCane · 20/05/2020 13:52

I wonder if Owen's cleaner is called Karen?

WTFSeriously · 20/05/2020 13:59

We need gifs on here. This Grin does not adequately express my mirth level at this comment ^^

RoyalCorgi · 20/05/2020 14:09

Ah but he didn’t employ the cleaner.

Indeed. I have a friend very much of the hard left whose kids go to private school - but only because his wife insisted on it. That's OK, then.

PronounssheRa · 20/05/2020 14:14

'My flatmate made me do it'

Does LOJ ever take any responsibility for anything.

popehilarious · 20/05/2020 14:25

Different subject, but I wondered about his tweet saying "I was genuinely upset about a Times hack ridiculing my "childfree privilege" (🎻🎻🎻) because I've always desperately wanted to be a dad, but being gay does make that hard."

He doesn't give any reason as to why it's harder for gay people than straight ppl to become parents (assuming he means gay as same-gender- identity attracted rather than the apparently outdated same- sex attracted) - does he mean that because there is a smaller pool of trans men than of bio men? But what is the difference? Is biological sex important in a partner or not? Or is he only referring to adoption?

Floisme · 20/05/2020 15:12

On that score I have sympathy with Owen Jones, and with anyone who wants to be a parent and can't, whatever the reason. I'm an older mum myself and I know how it feels to be patronised for being childless. It does happen and it's painful.

TheHoneyBadger · 20/05/2020 15:14

If we had gifs it would make it harder for the DM to copy and paste from here.

Nameofchanges · 20/05/2020 15:16

I find it very difficult to believe that Owen Jones would not be allowed to adopt or foster children.

popehilarious · 20/05/2020 15:16

On that score I have sympathy with Owen Jones, and with anyone who wants to be a parent and can't, whatever the reason.
Well, that was part of my point in a way - where does gender-attraction fit into it?

merrymouse · 20/05/2020 15:48

"I was genuinely upset about a Times hack ridiculing my "childfree privilege" (🎻🎻🎻) because I've always desperately wanted to be a dad, but being gay does make that hard."

If only there were some kind of word to explain what he means. I understand from Stonewall that 'Gay' no longer refers to same sex relationships, so its not clear why he couldn't have children.

Meanwhile he has been retweeting allegations that Julie Bindel is the leader of a powerful lesbian cult.

BadLady · 20/05/2020 16:05

Why doesn't OJ try dating a trans man then? He could surely hav3 a baby that way?

merrymouse · 20/05/2020 16:15

I'm sure that over the millennia, the number of men who have suffered because they can't have children is less than the number of women who have suffered because they must have children.

However OJ wants to remove the words that make it possible for women to talk about sex based rights, while expecting sympathy because as a same sex attracted man his opportunities to be father are limited. He doesn't seem to be completely stupid, so it's difficult to think of a reason for his double think except misogyny.

Floisme · 20/05/2020 16:35

I don't know OJ's personal situation or what the barriers to being a parents are for him and I don't think it's any of my business.
I can think someone's a bellend and still have sympathy for them on a human level about this.

BlackberryCane · 20/05/2020 16:52

OJ has previously suggested that the idea of him having a sexual relationship with a trans man is homophobic. I think perhaps genital attraction is ok when he does it.

I'd agree it wasn't our business except that he volunteered the information whilst sticking the boot into women, thus making it a legitimate topic for discussion. I sympathise with his situation too though, as I think it's perfectly reasonable for a gay man not to desire sexual contact with anyone possessing a vagina.
