Young men more likely to break lockdown
www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-52587368

Men in all age groups more likely to be severely impacted and die.

Maybe it is time for male specific restrictions?

er, I disinfect things coming into the house and quarantine stuff
and DH is more observant about this than me
I don't think it's over the top or especially arduous we just do it and forget about it
I think the article in interesting in that it distinguishes how different MH problems lead to different behaviours
if we understand why/which people don't comply, then we can address that. This is a good thing surely.

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/05/2020 08:53

Women on mn terrified of the virus, living in fear, disinfecting theings coming into the house
I've never heard men talk like that

It's DH doing all that in our house. I have asthma so am cautious but he's going the extra mile, bless him.

DidoLamenting · 10/05/2020 13:09

I'm not complying with disinfecting everything coming into the house or putting parcels into quarantine. I don't know if that is official guidance or MN guidance.

I also got a letter mid April telling me I should be shielding and sleeping in a separate room, eating separately, using separate bathroom etc, etc.

This seemed completely pointless given that I was amongst the last group at work who held out against home working, had been working alongside someone who had Covid 19 and since lockdown was imposed was following the standard social distancing rules. Also the information I was given, very belatedly, that I should be shielding, contradicts information which I saw on a shielding thread on MN issued by an English NHS trust.

Yesterday I got an extra two questions, asking me if I have or have ever had periods, and if I take hormones of any kind.

Interesting! That's very telling, isn't it? Clearly someone wants to double check how many of those who have signed up as women/female actually are.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/05/2020 13:24

That isn't the full reason.

They are trying to work out whether oestrogen and progesterone play a role.

You might be post menopausal but on her, so that affects the data. You might be a trans man so be taking testosterone. You might be a trans woman so taking female hormones.

That's what they want to know. Are you taking hormones, are you subject to usual sex hormones, have these had an impact on Covid.

WrathofFaeKIopp · 10/05/2020 13:28

I have a better question:
Are you taking hormones when you really shouldn't be?

BeetrootRocks · 10/05/2020 13:34

Huh?

Have you ever had a period does not indicate if you are post menopausal it only indicates your sex.
Many post menopausal women do not take hrt.

So the suggestion it's not about trying to unpick what sex people are in the data because they asked for gender which is totally irrelevant to this, is way more likely.

DidoLamenting · 10/05/2020 13:40

I last had a period, due to early menopause, 15 years ago. I've never been on HRT. Answering "yes" to have I ever had a period only indicates my sex.

WrathofFaeKIopp · 10/05/2020 13:40

They asked for gender and found it doesn't actually mean anything.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 10/05/2020 13:44

Have you ever had a period does not indicate if you are post menopausal it only indicates your sex.

Not to mention, the more actively imaginative members of some groups declare themselves to have periods, despite having no uterus - and those seeking validation are the most likely to fill in the app that way.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/05/2020 13:44

BeetrootRocks

But they don't only ask have you ever had a period.

They ask have you ever, are you now, are they regular, every 28 days, less frequent, irregular, are you pregnant, are you taking hormones, the pill, hrt etc

The questions are designed to fully understand any influence hormones might be having on the body's response to this infection. That's what they are looking for, not just whether you are make or female because that doesn't give the hormone profile in enough detail.

lazylinguist · 10/05/2020 13:48

Firstly, of course young males are the group most likely to break lockdown restrictions.

Secondly,

Maybe it is time for male specific restrictions?

What's the point in introducing further restrictions to a group who won't stick to them?

WrathofFaeKIopp · 10/05/2020 13:49

The gender question might as well include clown identity.
It reveals absolutely nothing about the biology of that person.

BeetrootRocks · 10/05/2020 13:54

Got a link to which exact questions are asked of which people?

Because the PP said 'Somewhat related, I've been filling in the 'zoe' app for corona symptoms for the pst few weeks.

Yesterday I got an extra two questions, asking me if I have or have ever had periods, and if I take hormones of any kind.'

Do you think her memory is poor or do you think she is lying?

BeetrootRocks · 10/05/2020 13:56

'They ask have you ever, are you now, are they regular, every 28 days, less frequent, irregular, are you pregnant, are you taking hormones, the pill, hrt etc'

This is really quite intrusive. 10 or so detailed questions about sexual health asked of all the women?
That would be enough to put some off using it I'd have thought. These are very sensitive, personal areas.

BeetrootRocks · 10/05/2020 13:59

And pp is quite clear they were only asked two and said what they were.

Reginabambina · 10/05/2020 14:01

Did you want to restrict men’s movements before corona by any chance?

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 10/05/2020 14:07

Oh, I have screenshots. Partly because, yes, I do have a terrible memory. Hold on, I'll find them. There were two multiple choice questions.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/05/2020 14:11

BeetrootRocks

I don't have a link because it was a series of boxes that appear on the app, once you answer that days questions they are not visible. I'll go and log today's answer and see if they show up again, if they do I'll screen shot it.

On other days they've asked different questions but they've been a one off.

I have no idea whether that op is forgetful, didn't understand, minimising what was asked or is misleading you but I know what I was asked.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 10/05/2020 14:14

Here they are. When I say 'screen shots', I mean, I took photos of them.

Wtf? It's medical research. Don't do it if you don't want to. You aren't compelled to do it. What is the matter with you? They are researching the effects of the virus, what affects it, etc. How can they do that without asking questions?

They were multiple choice questions so what I gave you were the answer options. So it asked about periods and then gave you multiple choice answers ie the are irregular, regular - various frequencies, don't have them anymore etc and there was a question about taking hormones.

Sign up for the app and it you can see for yourself.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 10/05/2020 14:26

Minimising? Lying? I asked a question, ffs.

I was curious as to why these questions came up, and thought it might be to do with the previous very clumsy handling of the sex/gender definitions on this app.

And yes, Beetroot, I found the questions incredibly intrusive.
I'm happy to help if I can, but not happy about answering this type of question.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 10/05/2020 14:28

'What is the matter with you?

How strange, Hooves, I was just wondering the same.

BeetrootRocks · 10/05/2020 14:58

Lol at all that

If it's about hormones what are they asking men

Do you get spontaneous erections
Are you able to maintain an erection
Do you have difficulty getting or maintaining an erection
Have you been diagnosed with low testostrrone
Are you on testosterone Therapy for low testosterone

Yeah right like that would EVER happen on an app like this!

Yet women's sexual health, just answer FFS! It's medical research!!!

(If anyone can find out that they ARE asking men this I will be surprised but happy. It is medical research after all).

I agree that the questions are instrusive and the fact they only asked for gender in the first place is even more strange when the actual info they need is, obviously, male/ female.

Gronky · 10/05/2020 15:38

I'm happy to help if I can, but not happy about answering this type of question.

Isn't that precisely why they offer the option of 'prefer not to say'?

the fact they only asked for gender in the first place

I was under the impression that they only asked for sex in the first place, then revised it to sex (at birth) and gender identity, as a way of cleanly separating answers. I believe the app still asks for both.
