I have been lurking on twitter lately and noticed Baroness Nicholson has been very active recently. Amongst her tweets are quite a few gems - letters to Liz Truss, tweets asking for evidence about Stonewall’s involvement CPS guidance just to name two.

This tweet I found very encouraging too.

It is imperative to restore the rights of women.I foresee a single issue, cluster approach;we make a new Women’s Rights movement lasting one year, solely to rescue womanhood from its destruction through today’s legal and social denial of our existence.Emma,BNoW

She has today written to Liz Truss again but this time with her concerns about the gross misinterpretation of the ECHR in the trans toolkits used in schools and recommends that such toolkits are removed from use now. Such support is great news.

I will try to post the letter for those not on twitter.

I look forward to seeing what what happens next.

Gender Identity
"Your gender identity is a way to describe how you feel about your gender. You might identify your gender as a boy or a girl or something different. This is different from your sex, which is related to your physical body and biology. People are assigned a gender identity at birth based on their sex.

Some interesting things to think about:

Everyone has a gender identity and expresses their gender in a unique and personal way. This could be through the clothes you wear, the way you stand, the interests you have.
Someone else can’t tell you what your gender identity is – only you know how you feel and you should never feel pressured to label yourself or fit in with other people’s ideas.
Some people know from a young age that their gender identity doesn’t feel the same as what they were assigned at birth, and some people may take a while to work out their gender identity. This is completely fine, everyone is unique.
When talking about gender there can be a lot of words and phrases used that you might not have heard before. We’ve listed some below, but you may hear more:

Gender expression – this is the way that you express your gender! For example, if you identify as a girl you might want to dress in a certain way or read certain books. A lot of people might not be aware of their gender expression, as it’s a natural way that we express ourselves.

Gender dysphoria – this is when someone feels uncomfortable about the gender they were assigned and who they really are. For example, if someone was assigned as a boy at birth and grew up feeling that this wasn’t right, they may have gender dysphoria. There is help and support available for people who experience this.

Transition/transitioning – if someone feels uncomfortable about their gender identity they may choose to transition. This is a very personal decision and can happen in lots of different ways, depending on the person and the options available to them. " (continues)

R0 the sexism shines through so clearly, doesn't it?

'Everyone is born suited to a particular sex role stereotype. Sometimes it takes a while to figure out which stereotype you occupy most comfortably. All stereotypes are valid!

'If someone fancies a stereotype not allocated to their sex, they may wish to start chopping off body parts willy-nilly. This is valid and must be celebrated and supported!

'Some people refuse to be reduced to a stereotype. These people aren't human.'

ChattyLion · 04/05/2020 16:35

This is so brilliant to read. In case no one’s mentioned it already she’s on the board of JK Rowling’s charity.

RoyalCorgi · 04/05/2020 16:55

Tyro - that's as good a summing-up of the whole sorry business as I've seen anywhere.

Michelleoftheresistance · 04/05/2020 16:56

People are not assigned a gender identity at birth. Midwives do not have sorting hats.

People will attempt to shove gender stereotypes on children from the moment of birth based on sex. This is irrelevant and doesn't work, as children have the personalities they have and like what they like. Boys can like, do and look like anything they want, and girls can like, do and look like anything they want.

Why is 'be yourself, ignore the strait jacket of gender stereotypes and you and your body are perfect as you are' so unacceptable?!

Its a framework built on sexist (and abusive) foundations.

A good question for Women's & Equalities MPs as well as the Secretary of State for Education.

People are not assigned a gender identity at birth. Midwives do not have sorting hats.

It's incoherent nonsense.

The midwife notes the sex of the baby. It's society that does the gendering.

I'm not done with "this cis nonsense" yet though. I'd like it noted and acknowledged that 'transwoman' is considered the socially-appropriate sex role for effeminate homosexual males. It is entirely consistent with their sex. Which means they're "cis".

Lordfrontpaw · 04/05/2020 17:23

I’d love a midwife to come and explain how the guess the gender of a newborn. Toss a coin, one potato two potato, rock/paper/scissors, throw a dart at a dartboard, boy-girl-boy-girl pattern? Or are babies born with either a fake moustache or pink glittery fairy wings?

I’d really love to know.

That's infuriating, R0.

Diversity and inclusion my arse. What's inclusive about compelling women to submit to their shackles?

And why the Navy think this is part of their remit is beyond me.

Lordfrontpaw · 04/05/2020 20:33

Diversity - oh, do they accept sailors with disabilities then? Great!

'Guide for Parents of LGBT+ Children'

Transgender Children
Generally, resources for transgender children are even more scarce than for lesbian, gay and bisexual.
There are unique differences and steps you can take to ensure your transgender child feels as supported as possible

Learn About Gender
Gender and sex are not the same thing. Sex is generally defined as the binary characteristic assigned at birth – male or female. Gender is more complex, as it is a spectrum from masculine to feminine, and there are people that feel they fit in anywhere in between the two or with neither. Gender is about which set of characteristics you identify with the most, and can change easily

Follow Your Child’s Lead
Transgender means many things to many people. Don’t assume that your child will want to transition, wear a certain type of clothing, or change their hobbies. Listen to your child about what being transgender means to them, and know that there’s no right way to be transgender.

Use Your Child’s Preferred Name and Pronouns
It can take time to get used to calling your child by a different
name and using different gender pronouns, and it’s okay to
make mistakes. Using preferred names and pronouns can go a
long way to make your child feel fully supported by the family

Interview with Sergeant Major Mark Hill MBE
"Mark Hill is a Youth Engagement Officer within 4th Infantry Brigade in North Yorkshire. He and his wife have a transgender daughter, now
coming to the end of her 6-month assessment period at the Gender Identity clinic" (continues)

What advice would you give to others in the same situation?

If any other parents have any thought that their child might be transgender, ask for a referral to the Gender Identity clinic as soon as possible – a GP can make this referral!
Let your child know that you are there to help and support them and you love them regardless of how they identify.
Never question the child as to whether what they are feeling may just be a phase. They should always know that their feelings are valid whatever the outcome.
Support is out there but it is often difficult to find it – Mermaids UK, a charity for transgender children and teenagers, were very helpful and we had a lot of support from them." (continues)

TyroSaysMeow · 04/05/2020 21:09

There's no such thing as a transgender child!

Transgendered children, yes. Who's doing the transgendering?

Gender and sex are not the same thing.

No shit.

Gender is about which set of characteristics you identify with the most, and can change easily

Ten out of ten for honestly, I suppose.

Listen to your child about what being transgender means to them, and know that there’s no right way to be transgender.

They are so close to getting it.

If there's no right way to be transgender then there's no right way to be cisgender either and the entire distinction is meaningless.

Said it before, will doubtless say it again at great length: the cis/trans binary is not real.

Never question the child as to whether what they are feeling may just be a phase.

Yes, because ensuring teenagers know that they're going through a period of great psychological flux and it'll settle down by their mid-twenties is just such terribly irresponsible parenting, isn't it?

Using preferred names and pronouns can go a
long way to make your child feel fully supported by the family

What, so we have to buy into stereotypes because it makes our kids feel better? Bollocks to it, I say.

TyroSaysMeow · 04/05/2020 21:11

If any other parents have any thought that their child might be transgender, ask for a referral to the Gender Identity clinic as soon as possible – a GP can make this referral!

'If you're worried your child may be displaying behaviours inappropriate for their sex, don't worry - the doctors can help!'

OldCrone · 04/05/2020 21:14

Gender is more complex, as it is a spectrum from masculine to feminine, and there are people that feel they fit in anywhere in between the two or with neither. Gender is about which set of characteristics you identify with the most, and can change easily

Do they explain why they think this is of any importance whatsoever? Or why children should be sent off for medical treatment for being a girl who identifies with masculinity or a boy who identifies with femininity?

R0wantrees · 04/05/2020 21:18

The Department of Health & Social Care "support[s] ministers in leading the nation’s health and social care to help people live more independent, healthier lives for longer."

"There is emerging evidence to suggest that #coronavirus may be having a disproportionate impact on some ethnic groups, as well as certain genders.

We're launching a review into the factors impacting health outcomes to address health inequalities."

STILLTish Twitter thread analysing CPD for NHS staff.

"This is Continued Professional Development for NHS staff. It’s approved training for Doctors, Nursing and other NHS staff. This is ideologically predicated and scientifically without merit. Module 1 of three. #CognitiveCapture .

In partnership with GIRES. The name ought to be familiar as they frequently appear on Hansard and are deeply embedded in the political class.

In this module you will learn about Gender Diversity and be re-educated about the “Gender Binary”. None of that nonsense about being a sexually dimorphic species. Just forget all that outdated biology and embrace the queering of facts." (continues)

a disproportionate impact on some ethnic groups, as well as certain genders

I'm willing to bet that there is zero evidence that the coronavirus asks you about your gender identity before it infects you.

Also willing to bet that male doctors who identify as women aren't having problems with ill-fitting PPE. I don't see any transwomen being expected to take care of elderly parents and homeschool their kids while also putting in a full day's work, either.

RedDogsBeg · 04/05/2020 21:25

This is just so nonsensical I don't know where to start.

Do they explain why they think this is of any importance whatsoever? Or why children should be sent off for medical treatment for being a girl who identifies with masculinity or a boy who identifies with femininity?

Only that parents in UK armed forces should "follow their child’s lead" in this matter.
