Baroness Nicholson on twitter

I have been lurking on twitter lately and noticed Baroness Nicholson has been very active recently. Amongst her tweets are quite a few gems - letters to Liz Truss, tweets asking for evidence about Stonewall’s involvement CPS guidance just to name two.

This tweet I found very encouraging too.

It is imperative to restore the rights of women.I foresee a single issue, cluster approach;we make a new Women’s Rights movement lasting one year, solely to rescue womanhood from its destruction through today’s legal and social denial of our existence.Emma,BNoW

She has today written to Liz Truss again but this time with her concerns about the gross misinterpretation of the ECHR in the trans toolkits used in schools and recommends that such toolkits are removed from use now. Such support is great news.

I will try to post the letter for those not on twitter.

I look forward to seeing what what happens next.

Yes, and the changing rooms that don't say 'men' or 'women' on them, I thought M&S had removed all that to make them gender neutral? Yet the chair's letter seems to be saying clearly that it's male/female changing rooms.

Thelnebriati · 23/05/2020 22:25

I'm hoping someone will collate her letters and post them in one place.

Winesalot · 23/05/2020 22:25

I wonder if Baroness Nichols has such longer term objectives once companies observe the law.

I hope so. She has shown that she has understood the depth of departmental capture and who is driving it. I read a tweet that suggested that she expects Liz Truss to deliver clarity in favour of women and children in July.

All I have to add is, are Mothers expected to take their teenage daughters for a bra fitting In a women’s changing room, where men can self id as women and masturbate in the changing room next door? (Albeit behind a lockable door) Enough is enough, we need areas set aside for just women and girls, it has nothing to do with gender or sexual orientation.

Winesalot · 23/05/2020 22:30

Oh and she has been sent a autogyn ‘resource’ thread. So I expect she will be clued up on it soon if she is not already.

By the amazing Trans Widows’ Voices too. So well set up on that score.

Let’s support BN and not get her efforts derailed. She’s fantastic. I don’t have to agree with everything anyone says/does to be an admirer.

Justhadathought · 23/05/2020 22:38

Twitter can only be destructive to anything she attempts to achieve, in the long run. It is such a destructive platform. I hope she steps back. It may offer solace to those that like what she has to say...but it can also cause much damage and hurt.

Winesalot · 23/05/2020 22:40

And she has this one now too.

This is what this community is about. I am in awe of the power of getting this information out when called upon. My gratitude to you all for your years of research, archiving and fighting this cause. I feel like I was asleep at the wheel until late last year.

If I was only willing to accept the positive changes made to my world by those I 100% approve of, much of the good stuff would disappear instantly.

Martin Luther King Jr's record with women was awful. Let's bin all his positive contributions shall we?

Winesalot · 23/05/2020 22:46

justathought

I agree it can be destructive but she does seem to be able to cope so far. She seems far more conscious of causing pain now. I think she is more than capable to walk away if needed.

However, at the moment she is harnessing the platform for research and encouraging people to act and speak up where they can. This is the positive side of twitter.

I'm not on Twitter - has anyone sent the Baroness the link about the increase in attacks in mixed sex changing rooms?

www.independent.co.uk/life-style/women/sexual-assault-unisex-changing-rooms-sunday-times-women-risk-a8519086.html

Just in case anyone is on Twitter and would like to point her in that direction! Smile

SirVixofVixHall · 23/05/2020 22:54

My local store had curtains I think, when I last went in ? I have been boycotting them so I haven’t used the fitting room for ages, I may be getting mixed up, or they may have changed the cubicles. Certainly they were almost never manned, so I went in with my dd as I was worried letting her go in alone.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 23/05/2020 22:56
  • oh, I see someone has already mentioned them to her. Fast moving feminists on twitter!
WTFSeriously · 23/05/2020 22:59

She's seen that & asked for a date/article I think & then been more direct asking for M&S examples. I think focusing on one shop, with the engagement of the chairman is a good tactic. Remember it took only 2 girls to start the domino effect on the schools guides. 1 big scalp on changing rooms, acknowledging the risks/liability, is all it takes to make an impact. It's why she's asking for concrete examples she can refer to as either a direct consequence of their policy or where they've ignored to risks/impacts on female customers.

I know of one incident in another store & the business failed to address the sexual harassment element of the demands of a Male getting a young female assistant to help him put on thigh high boots/heeled shoes while wearing a dress, nor the impact on the young teenage girl in the next changing room who froze when she heard a male voice in the next cubicle. The shop offered £500 spending vouchers as an apology but did not change their policy, nor make the fact their changing facilities were mixed sex.

SirVixofVixHall · 23/05/2020 22:59

I don’t understand why she thinks it is an excellent letter ? It is a hopeless letter. “Sexual identity “ what the hell does that mean ? The whole woolly obfuscation of that letter made me grind my teeth. Is is basically “ we have safe single sex spaces that anyone of any sex can use even next to teenage girls because “ .
I really don’t want Marks and Sparks to go under, i used to spend a significant chink of money there over a year, but they have absolutely no idea who their core customer is , or any sense of safeguarding the girls who use their bra fitting rooms, who will mostly be children of around 12/13.

WTFSeriously · 23/05/2020 23:00

I think it shows he's not got a clue what he's talking about & im hoping he's about to get 'schooled'.

Winesalot · 23/05/2020 23:16

sirvixofvixhall I believe that she feels it gives a starting point. The Baroness is now planning to give examples of incidents that prove that it is not safe. As he said in that first paragraph. And she will point out the conflation of sex (‘sexual identity’ ???) and gender.

She seems to relish the challenge.

Also, he actually replied. Not just a cut and paste and he did NOT ignore her letter or take a month to get back.

I hope she also points out just how many women sent letters in protest that they never acknowledged. That would be grand if she could get mention that.

@SirVixofVixHall
I think it opens up examination of why M&S have such a poor understanding, ie whom did they consult?
If it’s one of the usual suspects, this could be a push to get them at least publicly defunded and their reputations tarnished so state institutions won’t want further relationships or inclusivity awards from them. It’s a big ask, but I wonder if this is the long game, for want of a better term.

Xpectations · 23/05/2020 23:34

Because I doubt M&S will say they got the law so fundamentally wrong by themselves. I’d say there was a ‘trusted partner’ they consulted, received training and ‘Champion’ awards from, that M&S will say offered advice. One that is publicly funded and might be at risk of losing this funding.
Of course, buck stops with M&S cos it was their responsibility to check the legality.

Datun · 23/05/2020 23:53

If they can't address this issue adequately, I hope the papers pick up that all fitting rooms at Marks & Spencer's, including lingerie and bra fitting for teenagers, is now mixed sex.

I believe they've already reported on it, but it needs to be more prominent really.

SirVixofVixHall · 24/05/2020 00:00

Yes Xpectations who has misrepresented the equality act to them ? Who made these decisions knowing that it would make all the changing rooms mixed sex, including bra fitting rooms used by women who have just been through breast surgery and need a kind, female space, women who are of a faith that has strict rules on the mixing of the sexes, and very young girls , who will be feeling self conscious about their first bra fitting.
That combined with the ease of hiding a camera in a cubicle while wanking in the one next door.

Xpectations · 24/05/2020 00:03

M&S is a Stonewall Champion. Whether or not they consulted remains to be seen.

Datun · 24/05/2020 02:02

Excellent Lordfrontpaw.

What serendipity! And a pretty good article. Suuuunlight Archie
