Former student, Angelos Sofocleous, receives apology from University after transphobia controversy

To tell you the truth I cant work out if it is a new story. But Palatine have got a news story dated 20 April 2020 www.palatinate.org.uk/former-student-receives-apology-from-university-after-transphobia-controversy/

But on looking at the Durham University Students website their apology is dated 2018. www.durhamsu.com/articles/apology-to-angelous-sofocleous

So is this a new development and Durham Student Union have tried to hide it by dating it 2018, or is it that Palatine have only just realised there was an apology?!

This is a fascinating story - and another horrifying example of the “no debate” and “cancel” culture that has infected once rational organisations with regard to transgender issues.

Regarding the dates, I think the news that the student magazine is reporting is that the Durham Uni Philosophy dept. has apologised to the former student, an astonishing 18 months or more after the initial events. The 2018 apology, in contrast, was from the Students’ Union. Though both apologies were only for lack of due process rather than for treating an intelligent and involved postgrad student as a pariah for agreeing that “women don’t have penises”.

The guy’s original resignation statement is well worth reading. It shows up the absurdity of the TRA side’s approach, even though if anything he’s too generous to them. medium.com/@angelos.sofocleous94/resignation-statement-humanist-students-president-elect-719d81079028

Thanks! This what comes of skim reading.

Well I am glad that it hasn't all been swept under the carpet.

Just wish I could believe that this will make accusations like this less likely to happen.

But does nothing for the student who has had to go through this for over 2 years.

It's really depressing how feeble these supposed seats of learning are. They've unarguably been in the wrong, hence the apology, but the delay means it's so mealy mouthed and passive-aggressive it hardly merits the name.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 22/04/2020 15:14

Oh, ffs. It's one of those.

'I am sorry that you feel we fell short'

Bullshit. Can't even own their mistake. What is the point? You've got up to the point of an apology, why not do it properly and graciously?!
