We are still keeping our birthing people at the centre of our focus with clear maternity guidance from my local hospital. So we don't confuse anyone.

Giving Birth

• One birth partner is allowed when in labour. This will not change and is exempt from the general COVID 19 guidance.
• Birthing people are being discharged home from the delivery suite wherever possible and birth partners can stay with you until you go home.
• If you need to be transferred to the postnatal ward partners are not allowed to go with you.

Will the term birthing people be clearly understood by the maximum number of pregnant women?

It's not usual speech at all and some may not understand what they mean.

Of course on other threads people have said that if people don't understand the new language then they're too stupid to get the help etc

Yes I'd assume they meant midwives.

This obfuscation of language is potentially detrimental to their patients. We've seen it with women's cancers (not men's), and pretty much everything related to women's reproductive system from smears to birth to breastfeeding.

It's a really clear pattern that it is things relating to women and the sex specific functions of their body that must be renamed/ not mentioned/ have euphemisms.

I had to read it several times for it to make sense. When I read birthing people my brain filled in birthing partners. Yep, great for health information literacy.

Thing is birth as a word directly refers to a female body thing so how long before that goes.

I thought it meant partners as well. What is a birthing people.

Is that women ?

I would have definitely assumed “birthing people” were the gang involved in the delivery - midwives/doctors/sundry other medical professionals.
They’ve managed to release a set of childbirth guidance without mentioning the word mother??!

"Birthing People Voices" should do the trick...by making it fully incomprehensible to everybody.

Given that some people (with a penis and without), say that ‘we are pregnant’, is it not possible that some people will assume that ‘birthing people’ means the couple rather than the mother?

It's such an ugly phrase, apart from anything else.

"I am a pregnant woman"
"I am a woman in labour"
vs
"I am a birthing person"

It literally conjures up the mental image of my vagina performing a function first, and my human existence second.
The focus is entirely upon the bodily process, not the woman with a name, personality and life.

It's the polar opposite to 'woman centred care'

It's functional vagina and uterus attached to a nondescript human animal care.

In fairness a HCP was being interviewed on the television and she referred to ‘the covids’. Made my blood boil.

'Birthing people?' There are any number of ways to interpret this clunky, baffling phrase. But the one thing it certainly does not suggest is pregnant women. More woke BS.

Just saw this on a local health and exercise promotion body’s website (gmmoving.co.uk/blog/ways-to-keep-moving):

“MumFit is a pre and postnatal fitness service that is moving classes online to help keep pregnant people and new parents moving.”

It drives me fecking crazy! The organisation posting this seems to have a totally female management team by the way (own worst enemy situation???).

However, the person running the actual classes for pregnant women is clearly much more sensible. On her site - www.mumfit.net/ - she writes:

“ MumFit offers a friendly, professional pre and postnatal fitness service to mums and mums to be.”

“ MumFit offers specialised personal training for new or expectant mothers on either a 1-to-1 or small group basis.”

“The female body goes through enormous changes during pregnancy and it can be both an exciting yet anxious time.”

Perhaps some of you might want to contact Mumfit and tell her that her services are being advertised for “pregnant people”?

What is the government advice to potentially birthing people to follow when their biological mechanisms commence the process.

Birthing people would be shortened to birthers maybe aka breeders.

Any breeding stock whose biological birthing process commences will be supported by a gestationary expulsion practitioner.

What's possibly most galling about this is the surely TINY fraction of "transmen" who actually get pregnant and give birth. I don't have any figures to hand (if they even exist) but surely it's vanishingly rare. And yet language is being changed to suit them.

I have friends for whom English is a second language, and they wouldn't know what is meant by "birthing people".

Tbh I don't think it's really about transmen.

It's about connecting the words female, woman etc to female biology. And the objection to that is from another group.

Even the bloody shielding list talks about pregnant people with congenital heart defects
