www.theguardian.com/sport/2020/mar/28/billy-joe-saunders-apologises-for-video-giving-advice-on-hitting-women?fbclid=IwAR3KmCc_lTUa7qv7qOWdZ4RiXfNXL5I7qfG-xaBd6zAQq4HP-wcU2G4SUO4

The WBO super middleweight champion, Billy Joe Saunders, has apologised after a video emerged of him giving advice to men on how to hit their female partners if tempers flared during the coronavirus lockdown.

Footage showed the 30-year-old, who retained his title by beating the Argentinian Marcelo Esteban Coceres in Los Angeles in November, working out on a punch bag. In the video, Saunders talked about how to react if “your old woman is giving you mouth” and “she’s coming at you, spitting a bit of venom in your face”.

The boxer demonstrated on the punchbag as he talked about how to “hit her on the chin” and then “finish her off”. Following a fierce backlash on social media, Saunders apologised if he “offended any women”.

Is this now inciting to murder violence, and is that not criminal? Angry

So he gave a non-apology, to women he might have "offended".
What about simple-minded men who follow this advice? What about boys who look up to him?
Well done -- not!

This isn't a matter of being "offensive"; it's actually encouraging violence while at the same time minimising the importance of violence. Real violence, not the fake "literal violence" of not-using-preferred pronouns.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 30/03/2020 17:31

it's actually encouraging violence

Again, I don't know much about boxing, but is it not also demonstrating a more harmful way of violently attacking someone?

If there is a more textbook example of incitement to violence I can't really imagine it. In the current climate, given all the warnings and alarms about dv going up, I just don't really have words for this man or his actions.

StarintheMorning · 30/03/2020 18:37

Can they actually take his licence away permanently? That’s what it needs, for men to realise they can’t say these things without severe repercussions.

Alonelonelyloner · 30/03/2020 18:45

If some moronic dude published a video showing men how to punch black/Muslim/Christian/Chinese people who are annoying them, he'd be in court. This is a slap on the wrist.

Fucking hell.

Lordfrontpaw · 30/03/2020 19:21

Look - a teenage boy with Asperger’s was fined for asking if a transgender police officer “was a boy or a girl”. It was a hate crime apparently.

If this boxer made a video on how to beat/kill this PC on the basis of their gender ID then he would have had a visit by the police by now - how to beat the living crap out of/batter to death a woman is fine, absolutely dandy.

StrangeLookingParasite · 30/03/2020 22:24

"It clearly hasn't done, my sense of humour is not everyone's cup of tea."

There was no humour in this. He was not joking. He doesn't have the intellect for satire like that.
Pathetic, and I hope they never restore his licence.

DetroitOnTheMove · 30/03/2020 22:38

I hope the prick loses everything. Everything and everyone shuns him. Fucking piece of shit.

andyoldlabour · 30/03/2020 23:33

I will not comment on his ethnic background, his upbringing, his profession, but what I will say is, that he is a violent animal.
One of my relatives enrolled his son in boxing lessons, and he turned out to be a nasty, violent person.
I suggested at the time, that he gave him tennis lessons, because he was tall, well built and co-ordinated, this was ignored.
I wonder how many young men are being steered away from violence, instead of encouraged into it?

Guyonhere1 · 31/03/2020 00:47

@andyoldlabour What he did was wrong, but I find the fact you said young men are being encourage into violence through boxing ignorant and absurd. It’s been proven that boxing steers many more people away from violence rather than towards it.

bettybeans · 31/03/2020 00:52

That's a man with real problems. Problems with women, for the most part. Nothing about the video was even vaguely humorous and I don't know how anyone could have pretended otherwise. It was plain chilling.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 31/03/2020 08:12

If the police don't prosecute this vile specimen for incitement to violence, while issuing sanctimonious warnings about not buying Easter Eggs and hot on the heels of their numerous attempts to issue cautions/get people prosecuted for expressing gender critical views on social media or in person .... well.

Well.... I would sadly not be one bit suprised.

HorseRadishFemish · 31/03/2020 11:27

Do we know if it has been reported to the police?

andyoldlabour · 31/03/2020 11:35

"It’s been proven that boxing steers many more people away from violence rather than towards it."

A bit of a contradiction there if I may say so. Boxing steers people away from violence, by encouraging them to hone their fighting skills, in order to knock ten bells out of an opponent.
What sort of person is this likely to attract?
Obviously NABALT

Lordfrontpaw · 31/03/2020 11:41

Sorry it’s the Metro

Boxer Claressa Shields responds to Billy Joe Saunders by showing how to take down attacker with nut shot
Billy Joe Saunders is not a popular man right now.

Guyonhere1 · 31/03/2020 12:12

@andyoldlabour You clearly know nothing about boxing. People fight each other and get rewarded in a safe environment, rather than fighting on the streets and getting involved with crime. Get your facts right first

Khione · 31/03/2020 12:15

He has been suspended - should have been permanently revoked - and has made a sizeable donation to a domestic violence charity.

Still a useless piece of shit

Uhohmummy · 31/03/2020 13:55

He certainly should have his licence revoked for life, not just a suspension, for this. If you read the notice on the Boxing Board of Control‘s website it says that the licence has been revoked “pending a hearing under the Board’s misconduct regulation”. No information on the website about the misconduct regulation or whether the hearing may result in a lifetime ban. Does anyone have any information on this?

GlitchStitch · 31/03/2020 14:33

This was what he tweeted in response to someone underneath his twitter apology, couldn't even keep control of his misogyny on his own apology thread. He has a serious problem with women.

An interview where Saunders maintains 'Women are for sex' - obviously another hilarious joke.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 31/03/2020 16:14

And perhaps grimly inevitable - references on this boxing forum to Saunders being 'banged up ' for an assault on his then girlfriend. I can't find the newspaper story.

Guyonhere1 · 31/03/2020 17:06

Gervonta Davis is also a boxer who assaulted his girlfriend and he wasn’t even suspended. I think after the virus when boxing restarts BJS will be back.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 31/03/2020 23:02

I'm particularly disinclined to accept the "it's a joke" bollocks from a man who's already gone to jail for assault. Was he just kidding that time too?

Frankly, we need a category of violent crime where once you've been convicted for it you're on permanent probation and any further incidents trigger an immediate response.
