Ultimately, Hawkes said, biology, lifestyle and behaviour are all likely to play a role.

But it will only be possibly to tease out the exact balance when sex disaggregated data is more widely available.

Interesting. You would think male and females have different biology..

truthisarevolutionaryact · 26/03/2020 09:17

Goodness - sex based differences are real? Wonder how much of our NHS data will be corrupted because of the removal of sex based data?

Findumdum1 · 26/03/2020 09:25

how interesting. Bet the epidemiologists will wish it hadnt been possible for people to retrospectively change the sex on their birth certificates and the NHS to record deaths as the wrong sex when they come to analyse all the data. Hopefully the numbers of people incorrectly recorded as women are small enough still to be statically insignificant. Imagine if women were told they were more succeptibe than they really are because of biological men clogging up the data for women.

“The UK and US aren’t there,” said Hawkes. “They must have that data, they’re just not presenting it in that way.”

This just makes me despair. You would hope that someone at the Guardian would connect the dots on this and think...wait, why are they not presenting it in that way...could it be that campaigns to allow people to change the sex the NHS records them as being has potentially corrupted this data...?

But it doesn’t matter really.

Because men can just identify as women and then they will be less likely to die.

Right?

OverMy · 26/03/2020 13:10

I’d be looking closely at Iran’s data due to their trans fine, male and gay can be executed stance.

Chiochan · 26/03/2020 13:19

yeah, I spotted that Guardian article too.
Too bad there are no comments, why Guaridan, what is this thing 'sex' you talk about..

Why its almost like they do know the difference between sex and gender but only bother to accuritly use terms when men are affected?

JellySlice · 26/03/2020 13:33

"Oestrogen has been shown to increase anti-viral responses of immune cells"

I wonder whether this effect also appears in males taking exogenous oestrogen, or only in females producing oestrogen themselves? What about in menopausal women on HRT? Is it a current-oestrogen effect, or a "do you now, or have you at any time, secreted oestrogen?" effect?

KatySun · 26/03/2020 16:03

The COVID 19 symptom tracker app has ‘sex you were born’ and the choices are male and female. Simple.

DreadPirateLuna · 26/03/2020 17:26

There is evidence from historical epidemics and famines that women are more likely to survive than men, so women may have stronger immune systems. The downside is that women are more likely to have autoimmune disorders.
