Two jurors short and the rest concluded that nothing had been proven beyond reasonable doubt.

One verdict of Not Proven, the rest Not Guilty.

Some of the women were so normal reason civil servants, no reason to lie. It just shows to me that what most women do when a man at work is too tactile (keep away or push him off) probably are taking the better course than reporting it. It seems unlikely they would all make it up but it could be as he didn't rape anyone that jurors just felt the offences weren't proven and it was mild stuff a lot of men try on and is more annoying than criminal.

allmywhat · 23/03/2020 15:05

holy shit this is terrifying. Even the bits of his own testimony that i saw on Twitter were so damning: "I was just resting my hand on the small of her back to help her up the stairs..." who the fuck falls for excuses like that?

A dozen different women and it's not enough to convict him. The law is entirely broken.

endofthelinefinally · 23/03/2020 15:08

Rape and sexual assault might as well just be made legal. It already is for all practical purposes.

Mockerswithnoknockers · 23/03/2020 15:08

Looks like the prosecution failed to persuade the remaining jurors (would love to know the sex-balance) of any pattern of behaviour. Each incident on its own is a he-said-she-said, and with the burden of proof resting with the prosecution, that is a series of Not Guiltys, and one Not Proven.

He's threatening to release evidence inadmissable in court, which is a not too coded hint that he thinks this was a Sturgeon-inspired hit-job.

Expect interesting times in SNP circles in the weeks and months to come.

(Now who was the 'Senior Scottish Politician' who gave evidence against him?)

I don’t see how you could get an impartial jury though. Any rabid SNP supporters on it would automatically declare him innocent. Hell, even some of the poor victims who were pro SNP kept quiet at the time to not spoil the bloody independence campaign.

UseByDateExpired · 23/03/2020 22:58

Having made the excuse that the sex in one of the alleged assaults was allegedly consensual perhaps his wife will enact her own justice.

Hopefully brutally.

haggistramp · 23/03/2020 23:53

There were 8 women in the jury. and if 45% of Scotland are snp, then its given that 55% are not. Is there suggestion that 55% of the jury would have let there political persuasion affect their judgement? This was a shoddy trial, with no evidence other than hearsay (in which 10 women got together via whatsapp to collaborate their stories before going to the police) and should have never went to court.

Opendraw · 24/03/2020 00:45

Nearly as unbelievable as that post saying lock down was scaremongering....

DidoLamenting · 24/03/2020 00:54

(would love to know the sex-balance)

Started with 9 women and 6 men. Two had to be discharged leaving eight women and five men.

Cripes - who needs a justice system when you have a thread like this! Lady Dorrian is a highly respected and very experienced judge and I have little doubt that this case would have been very well considered by her.

Babdoc · 24/03/2020 09:00

If the victims - many of whom were actually SNP supporters- really wanted to conspire to harm Salmond politically, they would have done it while he was in office as first minister, not when he’s reduced to being a third rate journalist on a Russian tv channel.

Fantasiaa · 24/03/2020 09:03

eyeroll

Feminists: more men who are accused of rape need to be trialed!!
Man accused of sexual assault
Taken to court and found innocent

Feminists: well, he still did it !! 😡😡

Dreamersandwishers · 24/03/2020 09:17

I think it says a lot to women in Scotland’s workplaces. It says that we have not progressed beyond the 80s here in Scotland, whereby it was considered OK to sexually harass women at work; where we would turn a blind eye to poor behaviour. Very ‘Life on Mars’.
Even the defence barrister said it ‘if he’d been a better man...etc’
He may have been acquitted of breaking the law but his behaviour was abhorrent.

Xenia · 24/03/2020 09:28

So it still remains wise for men not to touch women at work if they don't want a risk of a trial taking 2 years to hang over them.

Dreamersandwishers · 24/03/2020 09:54

Was it ever wise for men to touch women at work? Be alone in bedrooms with them? Move in for a kiss? At work?

AnyOldSpartabix · 24/03/2020 10:27

Depends who the women were. There’s a small group in the SNP who have been going after many trusted, long-term members. They’ve smeared Joanna Cherry and trawled through years worth of social media posts for anything that can be used to oust those who might still have influence within the party.

This is not nine women who came separately to the police with similar stories. We don’t yet know who they were. But if they are part of the small group who are working to take over the party, it would not surprise me at all if a good number of them were lying.

And of course there is still a difference between being a physical person (Alex Salmond hugs men as well as women) and being somewhat morally lax (for want of a better term) than being a criminal sexual predator.
