How I got myself a ban from a Reddit forum

This is the comment that got me banned from a Reddit forum. It was in response to someone posting the comment in bold;

How is this very woman different from any other woman in the world?

Well let's see - they weren't raised and socialised as a woman, they don't have the same chromosomes, they've never had periods, they will never have their reproductive rights threatened, they won't have been raised with the knowledge that the other half of the world's population is physically stronger than they are and that any one of them could be a potential threat ....

Your cause really isn't helped by this sort of shit honestly. Saying that a transwoman is not any different from a born women is scientific garbage. You can't have any sort of sensible debate about any issue if you demand that people believe something that is patently untrue.

And yeah I know I'm going to get a load of shouts about being transphobic. But when you require me to believe that "a transwoman is no different to a born woman" and that is obviously not true how can I not be "transphobic" in your definition? It feels like you want me to switch off my rational mind.

And the weird thing is - I kind of think I'm a "moderate" on this issue. I can't feel strongly about "transwomen are women". When you're talking about people like Jan Morris and what they went through because of the need to live as a woman it does seem fair to accept her as a woman. I genuinely thought a few months ago that areas of conflict could be resolved.

Not claiming any hero status here - I just thought it was interesting to see how the debate is polarising us all. Anyway I did, strangely, end up with a credit balance of four upvotes which when you consider I must have got hundreds of downvotes as well shows there were a lot of people silently agreeing!!

Your first paragraph nails it.

I think you should wear this as a badge of honour.

LoveIsLovely · 14/03/2020 06:59

I got suspended from a fb group the other day. My crime? Asking why using the word "bitch" is ok but "misgendering" is not.

Seriously? When we insult women, we magically know which gender to use? Give me a fucking break

Removed myself as I just fucking can't. It had nothing to do with politics or feminism or anything either, just a hobby group.

HPFA · 14/03/2020 07:12

Oops - just realised there should be more line breaks after "rational mind" to show where the original comment ended.

Good answer OP. The levels of paranoia over the definition are what will eventually see it overturned. That anyone could read what you said and disagree is eye-wateringly illogical.

CockCarousel · 14/03/2020 07:19

The thing is, you answered the question honestly. It's not just the pro-nouns, it's necessary to know the correct doctrine. Don't have an opinion, #be kind instead.

Was it the 2 X chromosomes sub by any chance?

BoneAppleTeaa · 14/03/2020 07:28

Great post and congratulations on your badge of honour 🎉

DishwasherJan · 14/03/2020 07:32

Just join /r/gendercritical they’re great. Most of the ‘women only’ subs are no longer run by women. The only benefit is that they are great at peak transing people 👌

Mockerswithnoknockers · 14/03/2020 07:45

'Bitch' is a casual everyday epiphet in the USA. But say 'fags' for cigarettes and your feet don't touch the ground.

Qcng · 14/03/2020 07:53

Reddit is mostly populated by very young bedroom gamer types (not accusing you of being such a thing of course, and obviously r/gendercritical is different).

What I mean is, it's worrying that they're growing up in a world where different opinions get blocked, echo chambers are the norm, so they won't be able to learn and grow or express a different opinion themselves.

On a daily basis on Twitter I come across a "Noo so-and-so has been banned" post referring to a feminist with lots of followers. It's very depressing and it's exactly this sort of process that is keeping the TWAW cult alive and kicking.

Comment above re "bitch" is fine, but misgendering isn't. Everywhere. It's fucking everywhere.

HPFA · 14/03/2020 08:12

Was it the 2 X chromosomes sub by any chance?

No, not that one.

It wasn't a sub I would normally use at all but I was just so angered by that particular comment. If I went on a forum for
black people (I'm white) and said "I identify as black and I know all about and have experienced the repressions that black people do and none of you have the right to tell me any different" then there would be outrage and rightly so. Yet a man can literally wake up on day, declare themselves a woman and we're supposed to accept that?

I'm just sad that we've reached the point where a reasoned debate and compromise solutions are obviously no longer going to be possible.

And apparently this kind of comment is OK:

We (lgbt) are so awesome and cis and straight people will never have what we have????!!! Cishet people will never understand the kind of love and life we have and I think that's cool we all I think have a better understanding of the meaning of life

So it's alright to trash "cishet" people?

Do not exclude the possibility that some of this bat guano is coming from Putin's trolls, who are now outsourcing to poor African countries.

TorkTorkBam · 14/03/2020 10:13

Idiot kids. Take a leaf out of the TRA handbook. Focus your attention on the policy makers and the media.

FamilyOfAliens · 14/03/2020 10:17

Hard to know where to begin with that level of delusion.

TorkTorkBam · 14/03/2020 11:02

Sounds like a teenager coming to terms with being gay.
