Inventor of world wide web calls for urgent action to make cyberspace safer for women and girls

Women and girls face a “growing crisis” of online harms, with sexual harassment, threatening messages and discrimination making the web an unsafe place to be, Sir Tim Berners-Lee has warned.

The inventor of the world wide web said the “dangerous trend” in online abuse was forcing women out of jobs, causing girls to skip school, damaging relationships and silencing female opinions, prompting him to conclude that “the web is not working for women and girls”.

Hope he still has a lot of influence and is using it.

I fear I have limited understanding of how the web works though.

Every time I see a tik-tok video I wonder if Tim B-L is crying.

That's impressive.
There was thread a few days ago and a woman was talking about reddit and a sub reddit she came across.Users posted cartoon female images,and the images were violent and the females depicted were cut and bloodied.She said it was extremely disturbing.
Things like this have to stop and the platform shouldn't allow it.

It's like, it's unleashed all the hatred men and boys have for women, which must have been there since the dawn of time, but now we get to see it in graphic images/words for ourselves.

It's traumatic.

Wouldn't it be great if all the people who say how wonderful Berners-Lee is for giving away free the code that allows the internet to function actually stopped to think about what his is saying implies.

What is shows is that given the freedom to create, communicate, provide services, share etc., etc., that men primarily use this freedom to abuse women.

The code that he wrote didn't create that.

The men who use it have turned it into the wild west.

The old fashioned idea that it was up to women to civilise men seems to have been taken to mean that men can do what they want, and choose when it suits them to listen to women who point out the damage they are doing.

This and what Qcng said. The content out there is horribly disturbing and yet it's been brushed under the carpet. We act day to day like it isn't there. We didn't used to know what was really in men's heads we could only suspect but now we do! It should be thrust back into men's faces by us to say Look! We see this! Wtf IS THIS?? Shame them publicly for the foul and violent content they create and consume.
