Thanks for posting.

Shame about the virtually empty chamber.

Here's the vid on vimeo;

Pity so many MP's were too busy to attend.

She was tremendous, as was Jackie Doyle-Price.

Shame the chamber was almost empty - but there were some excellent speeches about all aspects of issues women & girls are facing today. They all go down in Hansard, which is something.

AutumnCrow · 05/03/2020 18:40

Some male party whips drifted in at the end

Mockerswithnoknockers · 05/03/2020 18:54

IWD and by the look of it Mhari Black couldn't be arsed to turn up.

Possibly off having her anti-elocution lessons to sound more Weegie and less Marcia Blaine

TorchesTorches · 05/03/2020 18:55

That was an incredible speech. Every word mattered. And wasn't that Dawn Butler in view on the front row? Having to listen to thay. I wondered if she changed her mind about strongly protecting self I'd... (I'm not holding my breath).

AutumnCrow · 05/03/2020 19:15

Yes, Dawn Butler was there.

Needmoresleep · 05/03/2020 19:19

Jackie Doyle-Price did some good ground work when she was a health minister responsible for mental health. (Unfortunately sacked by Boris.)

JulesJules · 05/03/2020 19:49

That was really impressive. Thank you Joanna.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 05/03/2020 20:03

Wonderful speech - thanks for posting

endofthelinefinally · 05/03/2020 20:16

Joanna Cherry is amazing, intelligent and educated. Why can't we have people of her calibre actually running the country? Leading political parties?
Sigh.

DidoLamenting · 05/03/2020 20:18

I'm afraid I got bored around the 4 minute mark as up to that point it was just a criticism of the UK government and talking up how wonderful the Scottish government and Sturgeon is.

At what point did she have anything interesting to say.

SorryAuntLydia · 05/03/2020 20:40

I think I may be trans-conservative, converted by the wonderful Jackie Doyle-Price Grin She was measured, clear, firm and fair. And 100% GC. I watched the whole debate (many thanks to the MNer who flagged the start). Joanna Cherry was great - and brave - too.

So much of what the Labour MPs said was great but...with the nagging suspicion that when they said ‘women’ they didn’t mean it biologically... it made it really hard to trust their comments. Although of course Jess Phillips’ name role call was moving.

And personally I had to tune out of Maria Miller’s ‘ let’s celebrate the menz too’ comments - perhaps she had more of substance to say after that, I couldn’t listen.

It’s a shame more parliamentary debates can’t be that civilised.

Throughthegate · 05/03/2020 20:54

Must have been a shame for you Dido giving up four minutes of your life like that.
The speech did get even better latter on but the first four minutes was about domestic abuse, the government's failure to ratify a treaty that she felt would help with this and the issues raised for (especially) migrant women.
If you have a problem with all that, I'm not sure why your on this board really.
Lots of us have cheered on speeches by women whose parties we would not vote for, when their feminist beliefs were clear.

nonsenceagain · 05/03/2020 23:04

That was magnificent. I wish I could vote for her.

DidoLamenting · 06/03/2020 12:38

Oh dear, do you have a problem with someone expressing a different view? All I heard was Cherry taking a pop at Westminster and droning on about how wonderful Sturgeon is.

I've come across Cherry in real life and have not been impressed by her. She's not as dim as Mhairi Black admittedly, although that is a low bar to clear.

NeurotrashWarrior · 06/03/2020 16:26

This was just brilliant!
