One small piece of good news. And similar bills in 18 states. It's a start.

mcduffy · 05/03/2020 07:19

Some common sense! Shock

Mockerswithnoknockers · 05/03/2020 07:21

But it was 31-29 on party lines.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 05/03/2020 07:45

Good that it passed, but worrying that the Democrats are imitating Labour an the LibDems and making this a party purity test.

SarahTancredi · 05/03/2020 08:22

I csnt believe how close it was... if one person had been.off sick or misunderstood...

Hope the rest follow..its blatantly unfair and I'm.seriously disturbed that people incapable of using their eyes or retain basic information are in the position to even vote...

Aesopfable · 05/03/2020 08:34

And that is why Trump will win the next presidency.

Joisanofthedales · 05/03/2020 08:48

So scary that the vote was that close

NotAGirl · 05/03/2020 08:49

The Democrats are learning nothing from the Uk and will lose to Trump. It's a strange world when women's rights are safer under the right but thank goodness someone is seeking to protect us.

Floisme · 05/03/2020 08:54

They still have no idea why Trump won, do they?

I'm pleased for Arizona women and girls.

SarahTancredi · 05/03/2020 09:08

I'm pleased for Arizona women and girls

Even though nearly 50 percent of people still hate them Sad

RobinMoiraWhite · 05/03/2020 09:36

Be careful what you wish for. This legislation was passed by Arizona’s lower house in the face of evidence from the local AIA (school sports organisation) which said that the 5 or 6 trans girls playing sport in Arizona school teams were having not competitive impact’.

If we move to legislation based on bigotry rather than evidence, what is to stop gay rights or women’s rights being next? After all, we know what the US religious right think of them.

SarahTancredi · 05/03/2020 09:41

Evidence like this?

Arizona pass Bill on Women's Sport
OvaHere · 05/03/2020 09:42

This is women's rights Moira. The right for women and girls to compete fairly. Yes, that doesn't stop religious America doing other things which are not fair or reasonable but this is.

Mockerswithnoknockers · 05/03/2020 09:43

If a male finishes 7th out of 8 in a female race, that is an unfair impact.

Floisme · 05/03/2020 09:43

Oh hi Robin.

The answer's still no.

NotBadConsidering · 05/03/2020 09:46

the 5 or 6 trans girls playing sport in Arizona school teams were having not competitive impact’.

That’s 5 or 6 girls who missed out as a result. It doesn’t matter if it meant a girl came 31st instead 30th as opposed to winning medals, it’s still a girl whose place has been negatively affected by a male in their competition. Why don't they matter to you?

Or to ask another question Robin, why do we segregate sport by sex in the first place?

Mockerswithnoknockers · 05/03/2020 09:49

No competitive impact?

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 05/03/2020 10:00

It worries me that what is going on here isn't the right trying to protect women. That's a side effect, really. The source of this is far more likely to be bigotry rather than feminism or even common sense.

This time, the result is (accidentally) good. Next time it may not be.

NotBadConsidering · 05/03/2020 10:04

Why, what evidence do you have for that? It’s perfectly reasonable to assume that Republicans can see how bonkers it is letting males play sport with and against women and girls and aren’t blinded by any ideology. It might not be feminism, but they can see the unfairness.

For every girl missing a place on a team

For every girl missing a scholarship

For every girl being disheartened by having to race against boys

At what point did it become that we have to explain or pass bills to let girls play fairly in sport and compete against boys

It’s truly truly so much bollocks

Deckthehallswithlotsofcake · 05/03/2020 12:34

A boy competing for scholarships in athletics against girls is cheating. Full stop. It is cheating.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 05/03/2020 14:05

Robin

Be careful what you wish for. This legislation was passed by Arizona’s lower house in the face of evidence from the local AIA (school sports organisation) which said that the 5 or 6 trans girls playing sport in Arizona school teams were having not competitive impact’

Men - bigger hearts, lungs, blood volume, higher levels of haemoglobin per unit of blood, greater bone density, less mailable ligaments, longer limbs, pelvis structure that is not compromised by the biological design to carry and give birth to a child etc... None is which is negated by reducing testosterone levels as required by the IOC which are still far higher than levels found in women or by gender identity.

There is a competitive impact for those girls who miss out on a team place, training place, race, podium position, medal or title. On this board, for most contributors - every girl counts - although clearly not by you.

If we move to legislation based on bigotry rather than evidence, what is to stop gay rights or women’s rights being next? After all, we know what the US religious right think of them.

Thanks for the warning but this is women’s rights. The Iranian and Pakistani regimes promote transwomen too. Do you support these regimes? This goes across the political left and right. We know what you think of women too. This is not based on bigotry - based on biology as you well know - fairness, equity and safety for girls and women.

There should be female category and and open category for sports.

As Zuby stated to believe this is fair you have to be ‘either ideologically possessed or stupid

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 05/03/2020 15:21

It’s very good news for female athletes in Arizona, but yes, scary that it was only passed by a majority of two, and that it’s a Republican initiative opposed by Democrats, opening the door for these disingenuous individuals to claim that this is bigotry instead of fairness.

Disingenuous individuals who are trying to claim there is anything fair or morally acceptable about male people trying to withhold autonomy from female people.

Why do you feel entitled to do that, RobinMoiraWhite? Why do you, as a member of the biologically male sex class, feel entitled to try and control and dominate those of the biologically female sex class? Why do you feel entitled to destroy our boundaries and remove our autonomy? How is it socially just for members of the sex class that has and has always had far greater power to attempt to extend their control and domination of the sex class that has and has always had far less power?

Why do you feel it is your right to promote this oppression of female people?

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 05/03/2020 15:24

I have reposted the above, in agreement with MNHQ, with the final sentence of my original (now deleted) post omitted.
